Nice news. I am v honoured to be appointed by Pope Francis as a Member of the Dicastery for Integral Human Development, (& migrant & refugee section). This is NOT a new job to be clear! But these are v rare roles for women. Thank you @pontifex ! I look forward to being of service.

Priti Patel just blamed refugees who cannot find a ‘legal’ route into the U.K. for ‘playing into the hands of people traffickers’ & therefore somehow forfeiting a moral right to permanent asylum even if absolutely clear refugees. The inhumanity of this just beggars belief.

In the Synod plenary sessions we are sitting together - clergy and laity and consecrated religious and ecumenical delegates - around tables, facilitated by various bits of tech to enable interventions and voting. A first! A view from my seat this morning.

And so, we are begun… #Synod . I will share just this one moment from tonight - a single male voice singing St Francis’ Laudato si’ whilst a man from Aleppo & woman from Columbia laid flowers and a life jacket in front of a specially made San Damiano cross replica.

All of us are welcome, Lucy. & none of us should expect to feel too comfortable …Unlike a political party, the church is not meant to represent our views, or exist for our comfort, but to gather us together in our very divisions through the body of the one who overcomes them all

Happy feast of Mary Magdalene. Someone shared a thought yesterday (inspired by Soren Kierkegaard)on Mary M: that for a moment she was the sole person who knew the truth and had witnessed it. There was a solitude in her knowing, a truth known alone, & then carried forth to others.

It is not ‘cancelling Christmas’ - it is celebrating it as best we can within limits we didn’t choose. With some humility. And fine to be sad and cross. We have remembered that the First Christmas didn’t look entirely ideal on paper either though right? No room at the Inn etc...

I’m not shocked by Johnson’s conduct. But I am head in hands depressed by organised messaging of front & back bench MPs ‘get over it, move on, he’s great, we need him’. That feels like gaslighting a nation. ‘It’s nothing, don’t make such a fuss’. That’s breathtakingly bad call.

Today is 130th anniversary of publication of Rerum Novarum, the 1st modern papal social encyclical. It teaches priority of people / Labour over capital / profit, it teaches an enabling state, it calls for organised communities. It believes social crises are also spiritual ones.

When BBC does this it really is a problem - you cannot be an ‘illegal asylum seeker’. It’s is a right under international law to present to a state a claim for asylum. It is the right of a state to - through fair, dignified and just process - judge the veracity of that claim.

This is why it’s tricky to communicate the kind of thing Catholic social teaching is … basically, it doesn’t obey the categories of liberalism in the following ways: 1. It views involvement in political life as part of a shared human task/nature/a responsibility/duty of all. 1/3

Every mainland European station I have been through so far has a meeting and welcome point for Ukrainians, well staffed, with seating, food, maps to locate local services etc. I have to say I just feel ashamed of our response. Again. Puts into perspective my own train trotting

How did this piece get past a decent editor? Just read it for its use of language - it’s not edgy or informative just mean and deeply unpleasant.

Hard to read Jean Vanier news & avoid parallels with other abusers who used theology/spiritual direction as sexual control. (Incl Yoder & mennonites) Not just priests. Not just Catholics. Task of rooting abuse out is deeper, more theological & undone than most will acknowledge

Happen to be trawling through every statement of the Catholic Church on migration since 1950 (more than 2,000 pages of documents). To do so as the new U.K. migration bill is passed is confronting to say the least. Below a thread with just a few of the most apposite.:: 1/a few

There is something so overwhelmingly sad and beautiful and powerful and fitting about the churches of Paris ringing their bells in prayer and vigil as Notre Dame burns.

Very touched by a gift from one of my PhD students from Hong Kong: a beautifully painted tea cup with the words sung by protesters in Hong Kong written through the design ‘Sing Hallelujah’. Some political theology to drink my tea from, she said…

The much smaller scale migration sculpture given to the Vatican by the artist, & the basis of the larger scale (slightly different version) now in St Peter’s Square. Quoting Hebrews 13, do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers for some have entertained angels unawares

For international women’s day... as the holder of a rare academic chair named after a pretty fabulous woman ... I give you ... St Hilda of Whitby (put a word in for us, would you?!) (photo pinched from a friend)

Idea that Thatcherite policies will fix the broken mess that is 2022 economic, social, ecological reality in UK is beyond belief. Or rather can be little other than an ideological belief system divorced from all reality. Makes for surreal listening when living in the North East
