The rottenness of Boris Johnson goes deeper even than his casual racism & his equally casual courting of fascism. He will advocate literally anything to play to the crowd of the moment. His career is a saga of moral emptiness & lies; pathetic, weak & needy; the opposite of strong
The Prime Minister attending the *celebration* of the repulsive Paul Dacre's 25 years as editor of the disgusting Daily Mail is another depressing sign of the sickness at the heart of UK politics & the Tory Party weakly traipsing towards the edge of a cliff.
Trump on course to get the highest share of non-white voter for a Republican Presidential candidate since Nixon in 1960 - more than twice what Romney got in 2012, nearly three times what GW Bush got in 2000
Opposition to a People’s Vote is just the resentful, petulant realisation that the country has changed its mind & undemocratic determination to stop that fact being allowed to be seen.
If none of the PM’s officials or political advisors made him aware yesterday of the Rashford campaign gaining such rapid momentum, raised in the Commons & explicitly rejected in his name by his official spokesperson, that suggests a completely dysfunctional & inept No10 operation
I have come to the same conclusion as Michael Heseltine, for exactly the same reasons - and will be voting
@LibDems
in Thursday’s European Parliament elections.
If we weren’t so punchdrunk by the relentless awfulness & endless lies this would be - which it should be - a full-on national scandal. What good reason could there be for a PM to suppress a report on Russian meddling in UK elections?
NEW: Dominic Grieve says he’s “extremely disappointed” the report on Russian ‘interference’ cannot be pub’d. Says cttee had made arrangements to print & lay report b4 parliament dissolved but blocked by PM. Says procedures need to change so this can’t happen again
This is the point: Johnson, Gove & their crew literally promised that we would never face these hard choices. They said the exact scenario we now face was Project Fear lies. They were certain the EU would give us a deal more or less as good as what we had. That’s why they won.
It’s really not OK that the President of the European Commission is a drunk who can’t be allowed out in public after lunch. It’s not at all OK if he touches anyone inappropriately. A responsible, ethical institution would have zero tolerance. This is nothing to do with Brexit.
Johnson said: “Too many care homes didn’t really follow the procedures”. Like Trump he refuses to accept responsibility for anything. And like Trump the response of his government, when challenged on his appalling remarks, is plain lying.
No 10 have since said:
‘Throughout this crisis care homes have done a brilliant job under very difficult circumstances.
‘The PM was pointing out that nobody knew what the correct procedures were because the extent of asymptomatic transmission was not known at the time.’
@SamCoatesTimes
The most fundamental thing it means is that we now know there are only 62 Brexit-before-country Tory Nationalist MPs - less than a 5th of all Tory MPs. They can & must be ignored: big majority against them even among Tory MPs & massive majority across Parliament as a whole.
Boris Johnson’s first
@IpsosMORI
leader satisfaction rating, minus 7% net, is the worst for any party leader since they started collecting this data 40 years ago. Hague & Corbyn the only others to be in negative territory from month one.
Yes, of course. These people have no integrity whatsoever and got where they did by basically lying about everything. They have contempt for ordinary people & don’t think rules apply to them.
After Professor Neil Ferguson broke lockdown rules,
@MattHancock
said: ‘I think he took the right decision to resign.’
Will it be one rule for Ferguson and another for Dominic Cummings?
Leavers do not own the right to define the detail of Brexit. They could’ve campaigned for a specific idea of what Brexit meant. They could’ve sought a mandate for ‘No deal better than bad deal’/Brexit-regardless-of-cost. They didn’t - because they knew that would lose.
It is very hard now to argue that 'austerity hasn't worked'. Its point was to eliminate the deficit & it has.
@David_Cameron
and
@George_Osborne
deserve immense credit for this.
The UK is now running a current budget surplus - that is, we no longer borrow to fund day-to-day spending - for the first time since 2002.
Britain is back in the black.
This looks like by far the most robust analysis of changes in public opinion since the referendum - big sample, proven cutting edge methodology & sophisticated modelling by the impeccably strong team at focaldata
The Commonwealth of Virginia has changed from completely Republican to completely Democrat in a single generation - because the demographic structure of party support has rotated (almost everywhere, not just there) driven by identity & open/closed values.
@michaelgove
Yes - his educational track record qualifies him. But values matter too, in public servants. And unfortunately his long back-catalogue of obnoxious hateful and misogynistic public statements disqualify him (and taint the Tories who back him).
Utterly shocking.
@greg_doucette
has posted a seemingly endless sequence of similarly grotesque and indefensible examples. As he concludes, it’s the police who are doing the rioting.
Vote Leave made a Farageist, not *liberal* case for Brexit. Cutting immigration & boosting the NHS is what Johnson, Gove & co. sold to the British people. Deeply cynical & dishonest for Johnson to try to re-frame Brexit as *liberal* now.
The US Senate is split 50/50 for only the 4th time in history. The 50 Democrat Senators were elected by 83 million voters & represent 201 million people. The 50 Republican Senators were elected by 63 million voters & represent 161 million people.
The Senate is split equally for the first time in 20 years, and for only the fourth time in history.
But the 50/50 division only further highlights the body’s ever-growing representation gap — and deep structural flaws.
Prediction: 20 or 30 years from now, Boris Johnson's name will be firmly in the conversation about who has been the worst Prime Minister in UK history.
The Prime Minister’s new Director of Communications was responsible for one of the most inflammatory & divisive contributions in the whole Brexit saga.
Having a Free School entrepreneur & Conservative on the Office for Students is an excellent idea. But surely they could have found one who doesn't also have a trail of vile, leering nastiness. Latest example of the Tory values failure, which is killing them.
@DavidGauke
Complete truth as always from
@DavidGauke
. Many people believed these Brexiteer arguments & voted because of them. Remain campaign polling showed most people thought leaving the EU would mean staying in the single market, or something v close to it, & keeping other EU benefits.
@DAaronovitch
Research during the referendum found most voters definitely didn't think we'd be outside the single market; thought it was 'project fear'.
The retirement of one of the greatest ever British sportsmen should obviously have been the headline on the Andy Murray story; weird, wrong & profoundly out of touch of
@bbcnews
, all day, to headline ‘He broke down in tears’ (as if that was not a totally natural human reaction).
AOC = Corbynism. The Democrats lost seats in the House - while middle-ground Joe Biden was piling up record votes - because centrist & independent voters were scared by ‘defund the police’ & the implications for middle America of AOC/Sanders ‘democratic socialism’.
I saw party consultants take over a Congressional swing campaign operation this year and was it wasn’t good.
The blind impulse to blame activists and the left both demoralizes a key constituency and distracts from asking real Qs & fixing serious operational issues.
The Sunak/Tory conviction that the immediate payoff Britain wants from a stronger economy is lower taxes, rather than investment shows how wildly out of touch they are - or perhaps just what a narrow Tory core their campaign is aimed at.
Cases, Cases, Cases! If we didn’t test so much and so successfully, we would have very few cases. If you test 40,000,000 people, you are going to have many cases that, without the testing (like other countries), would not show up every night on the Fake Evening News.....
CCHQ could and should have intervened to protect
@NickBoles
- who has been tirelessly loyal and repeatedly voted for Brexit - from local extremists. The Conservative Party’s lurch towards nasty, narrow nationalism continues. Apres Nick, le deluge.
Interesting to remember now that Donald Trump was so desperate to avoid Joe Biden being his opponent that he literally got impeached by the House of Representatives for his efforts to stop it.
Every time Johnson et al say that not leaving the EU by 31/10 would betray democracy/destroy confidence in politics, they should be confronted with their prior promises:”We didn’t vote to Leave with No Deal” (Gove) “There will continue to be access to the single market” (Johnson)
@GeorgeTrefgarne
Or, perhaps , you were just ridiculously naive & it was an utterly stupid idea from the outset; foolish, irresponsible & completely disconnected from the truths - however regrettable you think them - of how economies work in the era of globalisation.
As an A-level English student studying Stoppard plays, I wrote to him asking why the colour yellow recurred so often in his work & (magnificently) he replied & he (magnificently) said: “I’m afraid I just picked a colour”.
Every word of this is completely true. It's depressing how many Tory MPs & senior figures accept this privately but don't have the guts to say so publicly. Party before country is the new Tory instinct. The Tory icons they claim to revere would not recognise this as Conservatism
What incompetence. What failure of governance. Boris Johnson can't blame Theresa May, he can't blame John Major, he can't blame judges, he can't blame civil servants, he can't sack the Cabinet Secretary again. There's only one person responsible - him. Me in the Commons today:
Big part of the Tory Party’s problem with BAME voters is that the few people of colour who do rise through its ranks so often then say that because they got to the top racism isn’t a barrier to anyone else in other walks of life. Hard to believe they don’t all know that’s a lie.
I can’t respond to Hannan because he’s blocked me (fair enough). But he didn’t just ‘hope & believe’ the EU would agree to a good deal, that insistence was his whole basis for supporting Brexit. He attacked the motives & integrity of all who (correctly) questioned that assumption
The repulsive Daily Mail unsurprisingly chooses to boost Trump - the embodiment of hate, lies, racism, bigotry, misogynist & intolerance - and in so doing, badly misjudges what mainstream Britain thinks.
As Tony Blair said: "The single hardest thing for a politician to understand is that most people don't give politics a first thought all day long". He added that the reason this matters so much is that it makes them focus on the small, not the big picture"
We *were* winning Pennsylvania big at a randomly chosen moment during the counting of votes, which ended up with *us* losing. My team *was* winning big, but the referee insisted several further goals against me also had to count in the final score.
Truth is the govt DID act on scientific advice, just not THIS advice. They said scientists were united when they weren't & it turned out they'd gone with the wrong advice & as a result we locked down 11 days later than we could & should have done.
77% of voters identify very or fairly strongly as either Remainers or Leavers. Only 37% identify very or fairly strongly with any political party. Telling analysis from
@whatukthinks
showing how deep & enduring the Brexit division is
“I accept the finality of this outcome...For the sake of unity of the people & the strength of our democracy I offer my concession & accept my responsibility, which I'll discharge unconditionally, to honor the new President &...help him bring Americans together" Al Gore 13/12/00
Trump literally accusing doctors of falsifying death certificates for personal financial gain - and in the process asserting, madly, that doctors get paid on the basis of what their patients die of. As he nears his end he gets more desperate and more disgusting.
@PCollinsTimes
once explained this to me (because I kept making this mistake): you can't believe literally anything
@BorisJohnson
says about anything. All flawed analysis starts by assuming he might have once meant something he said.
I was strong advocate of
@BorisJohnson
genuine concern re in work poverty - he always said when speaking at
@LivingWageUK
events that all
@Conservatives
really worried if work meant living in poverty This means I am really struggling with his lack of support 4
@MarcusRashford
Trump, with malice aforethought, separated children from parents. Now they can’t find the parents of over 500 of the children. If you support or condone Trump, this is what you stand for.
I’m getting back into door-knocking for the first time in ages because, like so many other former Conservatives, I want to support
@monicabeharding
in this campaign. She is going to be a great MP for Esher & Walton and a strong, refreshing addition to our national politics.
☕ Lovely to take a break from chatting to commuters at

station this morning about my better railways campaign and to drop in to the bustling Archway Cafe next door.
I have to say their window is looking particularly fine. 😉🔶

Everyone should read this by
@SamGyimah
. He is one of the sharpest & most positive people we've had in our politics in a long time. It's to the shame of the Tory Party that their world has become so narrow he had to leave it.
