Free flowing anti-Muslim hate and profiling of “Bangladeshis” in Assam as rapist, thief, dacoits, and a threat to law and order. This is organic to Assamese nationalists, centuries old. Not an imported variety of hate and disgust for the minorities. Please watch this report.

My views on the movie Anek which profiles northeast with the same mainstream gaze. In its singular narrative, it blankets NE as a homogeneous zone filled with violence, including the desire to save it for the nation.

After the Darrang murder, Assamese vernacular print media is filled with news & concerns of "illegal", "encroachers", "foreigner", "final solution", & all other qualifiers and descriptions that collectively vilify & demonise the figure of the "Bangladeshi".

In this jointly written article with @angshuman_ch , we critique the conscious efforts of a few Assamese nationalist and sympathisers to erase the anxieties, humiliation, and dispossession one had to undergo through the NRC process.

Prominent Kuki civil society groups like Kuki Inpi, Manipur are in favour of NRC in the state. There is a consensus between the state & large section of Meities for NRC. Don't be mistaken, the both want NRC. In time, the "illegal immigrants" will be thrown under the bus.

Destroying homes of the accused is a draconian abuse of power. Normalisation of such use has turned our democracy into a nightmare for minorities & completely eroded the ethico-political of the state. One is left to stare in horror if there are any limits to violence in India.

Iqbal compared Indian Muslims with the Jews. Although the context is different now, the condition of Muslim subjects has become most fragile & vulnerable. They are body without organs & can be killed anywhere, anytime. Only they know the real measure of this new fear & terror.

Vernacular Surveillance Tagging Assam CM, Samujjal Bhattacharya, & Assam Police for anything critical on Assam is the new norm and pre-occupation of Assamese nationalists. The profile of the nationalist is also very plural--academics, journalists, novelists, artists, you name it

NRC is the new Assamese religion that transcends the state, society and the public sphere. This sacredness of NRC makes intolerance socially respectable and even desirable.

Meiteis blame the Kukis. Profile them as narco-terrorists, illegal & more. The ruling party blames external forces in Myanmar. We are being guided by a 'pure' party & society towards a myopic and violent world. That's some narcissism, obscenity & purity in guise of a victim.

This case captures the real spirit of NRC. Families are struggling to live together. They are humiliated & torn apart. Justice & human rights are utopic for victims of NRC. This is such a tragic case that paints the everyday reality of the NRC process.

Why is anyone surprised with the idea of new NRC? Reverification or new NRC is a logical conclusion. There will never be a final NRC. Period. Also, where are those free and fair NRC minds? Back to the fence, changing colour or liberated?
