NEW: JK Rowling and Elon Musk have both taken aim at Scotland’s new hate crime laws, which are set to come into effect next month.
Rowling has said she will not delete social media posts that could breach the new hate crime laws – which she branded 'ludicrous'.
The Tories in 2010 : There is no money.
Labour in 2024 : There is no money.
Maybe, in one of the richest nation’s in the world, it’s time to stop accepting that excuse.
🚨 NEW: In his first major speech as Prime Minister on Tuesday, Keir Starmer will warn that life in the UK “is going to get worse” before it gets better
“Things are worse than we ever imagined”

Have written to the Chief Constable to express my concerns about the heavy-handedness of policing at the royal accession in Edinburgh yesterday.
The right to peaceful protest is integral to a democratic society.
@MrMcEnaney
It’s to prepare them for the ‘real world’ in which no job has stationary for you in the office and every job insists you bring your own pen to work from home. 🙄
I understand Stephen Fry not wanting to think badly of his friends but there comes a point when it is kinder to say, “You have fallen for the lies and manufactured fears of a hate group and you need to be better because you’re hurting people.”
One thing this election (the UK one) has made clear is that transphobia doesn’t win elections.
That’s been clear in Scotland for some time, with Alba making it a main plank of their platform and getting nowhere, but now we see it across the UK.

BREAKING: Comedy club The Stand has U-turned on the cancellation of an event with MP Joanna Cherry, after taking legal advice.
The firm says it 'publicly and unreservedly apologises to Ms Cherry'.
Sandi Toksvig has been left “distressed” by “people who call themselves ‘radical feminists’ but are anti-trans”.
“I could weep. I don’t get it. It’s beyond me
Some Labour activists seem really upset to have lost the vote of a lot of left wingers.
Your leader literally said, “If you don’t like it, there’s the door.” Don’t fault people for taking him at his word.
There’s something hidden in here which shows the dark, regressive side of the SNP.
Yousaf says his phone ‘blew up’ when Harvie criticised the Cass review.
Why?
A flawed review conducted by a Tory govt south of the border should be easy for the SNP to dismiss. 1/3
Hey
@edinburghpaper
you misgendered the manager of the bar in this article. You are quoting from their Twitter and they explicitly say there that their pronouns are they/she.
Please correct.
@TheatreSpoonie
She was *very* aggressive. The picture alone doesn’t do it justice but when you see the full video of how she behaved… I’ve rarely seen worse even on the most radge of Saturday nights.
Labour just had a choice to support Green/SNP budget or back a Lib Dem budget which allows compulsory redundancies.
They decided they hate us more than they support unions.
It takes a special kind of mind to look at Covid, its aftermath and the environmental crisis and think, “The solution is more car traffic between Edinburgh and Glasgow.”
New Scottish Conservavtive leader Douglas Ross wants to widen the M8 to 3 lanes all the way between Glasgow and Edinburgh to reboot the Scottish economy after Covid.
Good idea?
@IanDunt
So… their message was right. Labour did win but people voted how they liked and got, for example, Carla Denya instead of Thangham Debboniare.
From a leftist perspective, what’s wrong with that?
The only reason questioning the scientific validity of the Cass review (which the BMA are now doing as well) would make the BHA difficult to maintain is if you *want* to follow it and the only reason you would want to is transphobia.

I honestly think this footage is the end of any leadership ambitions KF may have had. Not because of what Ross said (good though it was) but because of her reaction.
That image of her playing with her phone while an MSP speaks about her appointment will be shared again and again
"I'm being asked to vote for someone who thinks there's something wrong with me, not because of any views I hold but simply because of who I am. I will not do that."
Greens MSP
@Ross_Greer
sets out why his party opposes the appointment of Kate Forbes as deputy first minister.
@MhairiHunter
I wonder what it is that sets Meghan apart from the other two he named? What ‘cellular’ trait might she possess that gets him so worked up? What is inherent about her that those two white women don’t have?
I just can’t work it out…
If you want green you have to vote Green.
If you vote SNP (or Labour for that matter) hoping that the Greens will push them on social justice and the environment then what you actually want are Green policies and it’s time to vote that way. In every election.
Indeed, it should arguably be a gift for them. Much as it leaves me queasy to talk about playing politics with trans people’s lives the idea of putting clear, progressive distance between Holyrood and Westminster should stoke independence.

@JamesNokise
To be fair, and I know this from working such places on a train station, the people there are on minimum wage and were paid until 9pm. If they took initiative and stayed open there’s no guarantee they’d be paid for the extra time so why would they?
@FairHospitality
@BrewDog
Absolutely disgraceful of Brewdog. Pubs should protect their staff first and foremost and a lot of people have good reason to not feel safe around the EDL.
To stick with the SNP one of the four SNP MPs with a swing away from them of over 20% was Joanna Cherry - I know for a fact people were holding their nose and voting Labour specifically to be rid of her due to her transphobia.

@latkesaurus
Imagine the end of term reports.
“Ten of the kids died but the survivors can do quadratic equations so I call that a win.”
What a way to view the world.
Despite what ‘gender critical’ people claim; that their obsessions are the public’s (and especially women’s) obsessions the results are in and they are not.
Alba got nowhere, transphobic MPs were defeated, the Tories were decimated.
Transphobia loses elections.

@Douglas4Moray
So… the GRR bill is not even law but this is the fault of the GRR bill?
It’s that sort of insight that really earns you your two salaries.
The Tories attempted to make ‘we know what a woman is’ a key talking point. They suffered the worst defeat that party has ever seen.
The SNP made someone against trans and even gay rights DFM, they went back to pre-2015 levels.

Banning conversion therapy IS leaving Scotland’s children alone. Not doing so is letting them be abused. Conversion therapy is abuse and its ban can’t come soon enough.
@scottish_brit
It’s an excuse because they constantly refuse to tax the wealthy.
Yet big business constantly gets subsidies whether it’s Labour bailing out banks or Tories shoving money to useless PPE.
Socialism for the rich, capitalism for the rest.
For my party, the SNP scrapping policies that are both popular and environmentalist is obviously going to be a gift at the polls.
But as I actually care about Scotland - can the left of the SNP arrange a rebellion right now, please?
BREAKING: ScotRail will bring back peak fares for train tickets.
It comes after a report found a pilot scheme scrapping them had 'limited' success and did not attract enough people to rail travel.
Thangham Debbonaire, someone who is at the very least ‘gender critical’ curious, was beaten by Carla Denya who has been explicitly supportive of trans rights.
The Lib Dems, whose policies are for trans rights, had their best result yet.
4/6
Labour being utterly, utterly crap.
Scotpol Twitter Labour strut around acting like they’d be the most radical thing to happen to Scotland if they got into power then Labour leaders say this.
🔴 On this drug decriminalisation call, Labour shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves told journalists: “I do not think this sounds like a good policy. I find it quite stunning that this would be a priority for the Scottish Government”
So, unsurprisingly, all that, “It’s not about hating trans people, it’s about safeguarding,” was nonsense.
It was absolutely about trying to make trans people unhappy.
You got me Elaine, if only there was a way to go back and hear your reasons for flashing the Scottish Parliament.
Yknow like a video uploaded by yourself...
@MhairiHunter
I thought that as well. Quite weird to say, essentially, “This democratic election is an affront to the rule of law.”
If he didn’t want extremists elected why did he give a bunch of them front bench positions?
Very well, as so many have asked for a comprehensive explanation of why I think CEC should join Stonewall’s Diversity Champion programme here it is.
Be careful what you wish for, I guess.
(Content warning : NAZIs and their beliefs, transphobia.)
@Obsolesence
@Alex4Craig_Dudd
@AdamRamsay
@susan4leithwalk
At a time when organisations are leaving the Stonewall scheme in their droves it does beg the question as to why CEC is choosing to go in the opposite direction.
And the electorate have a right to question & hear justification for that decision, not to be mocked as “bigots”
Laughter in the city chambers as Labour leader Cammy Day claims Labour are not working with anyone to propose their administration.
Because it is a laughable claim.
This is really funny from Scott considering at the council level, where he operates, Labour have chosen a unionist alliance with a centrist party and a right-wing party instead of creating a majority left-wing coalition.
It’s very important to understand that the increase reported here relates not to an increase in hate CRIME but an increase in ALLEGATIONS of hate crime. The two things are very different. Very different indeed. I hope
@ScotNational
will make this clear.
So Israel’s leading newspaper agrees with Maggie Chapman. This is going to be awkward for those calling for all sorts of punitive measures to be taken against her.
Editorial board of Haaretz, Israel's leading newspaper, says Netanyahu himself is squarely responsible for the disaster, having ignored the potential consequences of escalating aggression toward Palestinians.
Tired of people lionising Joanna Cherry. Yes, she was on the right side in the case of proroguing parliament and her name happened to be the first on a *cross-party* appeal against it but her transphobia cannot be ignored. She is not progressive.
Jocks Lodge student housing refused.
I spoke against it as a ward councillor because I thought such a large building was detrimental to the character of the immediate area so pleased to see that result.
A lot of the responses to this are despicable.
Of course it’s going to cause someone mental distress to lose such a prominent position so publicly and so quickly. Saying so doesn’t make him ‘weak’.
That kind of response is exactly what is meant by ‘toxic masculinity’.
@jk_rowling
You admiringly reposted an LGB Alliance video. You keep attacking Mermaids. You keep retweeting transphobes.
It’s not like the golden plates, your denials are like when ‘comical’ Ali gestured at oncoming American tanks and said ‘there are no tanks’.
When we say ‘trans rights are human rights’ it isn’t just some empty slogan. Taking away trans rights is how a nation starts to take away human rights.
First they’re coming for trans people and I refuse to say nothing.
I support the RMT strike. I support the barrister’s strike. I support the strippers in Edinburgh trying to keep their jobs in existence.
I support anyone who is simply asking to take home a decent wage. That’s never too much to ask.
@artofstumbling
I think/hope that emphasis is more about highlighting that the ‘gender critical’ movement doesn’t even recognise a c*s woman and doesn’t have any internal logic.
Of course trans women should be able to compete in women’s sport.
In our party the old guard resign because we’ve gone too far left. In the Labour Party the old guard resign because they’ve gone too far right.
It should be obvious who left-wingers should vote for.
John Swinney has responded after scientific analysis from a top US university concluded that the Cass Review 'obscures key findings, misrepresents its own data, and is rife with misapplications of the scientific method'
Rent controls are an overwhelmingly popular policy that costs the govt nothing.
This endless cancelling of Green policies is just spite and I think it will cost them at the ballot box. Swinney won’t get another term.
EXCL: NATS ministers are set to water down plans for rent controls as part of John Swinney’s axing of Scottish Green policies, the Scottish Sun can reveal
First and foremost I put it forward because the CEC LGBT+ staff representative group asked me to. I have come to the conclusion that when a minority group asks you to do something, in general you should.
@ka8895
Or maybe, as Labour promised in their manifesto, tax the energy companies that are making billions and partly causing the cost of living crisis.
@DanielFarnitano
@KatyMontgomerie
For tens of thousands it would have to be longer than that. Hence the ancient historian Ephorus writing of the original olympics,“Every medal was won by a trans woman until we banned them from competing because they are women.”
A serious message for Trans day of Visibility.
I’m non-binary but because I still use male pronouns it doesn’t really change my daily life.
When I post something even vaguely trans supportive here, though, I have to restrict replies or get a torrent of transphobia.

EXCL: UK plead with SNP to halt gender law - Kemi Badenoch set to use an 11th hour meeting with the Scottish Government tomorrow to ask for more evidence over self-ID and suggest a delay to the landmark laws: via

@holyroodmandy
Has it occurred to you that asking that question is your obsession and not the public’s? Every single party that has stood on this, “I know what a woman is,” platform has lost.
So let me get this right : Tory MSPs want Lorna Slater to go for telling the truth about transphobes but want Boris Johnson to stay despite him breaking the law he made on lockdown rules.
What a sensible, rational party they are.
New: Douglas Ross says "it wouldn't be right to remove the Prime Minister at this time". The Scottish Tory leader was the first MP to publicly call for PM's resignation over partygate, but later said he had withdrawn his letter of no confidence. Total u-turn it appears.
BAME groups want an independent enquiry into the city’s colonial past? You do it. LGBT+ staff want you to join the Diversity Champions scheme? You do it. No ifs, no buts.
Very pleased to be re-elected to represent Craigentinny & Duddingston. Thanks to the local team for all their hard work, everyone who voted for me - I promise to continue working hard for the ward and the city.
For balance, this is terrible as well.
Satire is supposed to exaggerate reality and Anas Sarwar doesn’t go on and on about being a dentist. He just doesn’t. It’s like someone who hasn’t followed Scottish politics at all was given a very quick briefing on it.
This is not a fair description of the SNP position which was to make future funding contingent on EL paying real living wage.
That is not the same as being a serious proposal to withdraw all future EL funding. Not at all.
Today, Edinburgh Council’s SNP group put forward a serious proposal to withdraw ALL future Edinburgh Leisure funding.
It would have meant -
🏊♀️ swimming pools closed
🎾 sports halls shut
⚽️ sports clubs cancelled
We must never ever let this group run the council.
I am absolutely with the Rainbow Greens here. The SNP should not be embracing the likes of Brian Souter. His vision of independence is not one that a progressive force for independence could ever share.
Brian Souter was one of the biggest supporters of the cruel, vile Section 2A - spending more than £1m campaigning in favour of it.
Accepting, or seeking the support of a prominent backer and financier of regressive and damaging policy, shows a clear lack of moral standing. 🧵1/6
Why is the Scottish NHS following England’s lead on GICs when it’s clearly going down a path of pointless transphobia? Why would anyone take Wes Streeting’s lead on ANYTHING?
On Monday the 12th of August (next week) the Scottish NHS will stop self-referrals to the NHS Gender Identity Clinics. You will need to be referred by a GP or by a mental health service. This is what we have in England and Wales
Self-refer this week if you can and need
Looking at the achievements of those politicians criticising Lorna Slater for taking 2 days off out of 14 I feel sorry for them - it must be exhausting working 12 hours a day, 14 days straight to achieve nothing.
Whoever the new FM is if they choose not to challenge Westminster on the section 35 that means the Scottish Greens would be the only party that supports Scottish independence and can say it stood up for Holyrood’s independence.
That prospect should frighten the SNP a lot.
@LGBTglitterati
I have emailed the lottery community grant’s customer service team. I seriously doubt they would want to be involved with this organisation if they knew half of what they are like.
