Today marks the 1 year since the #Yazidi Survivors Law was passed by the Iraqi Parliament. This weekend in Khanke, Iraqi Kurdistan, I met many women + children who had absolutely NO idea how to access support nor that it was even available. Serious issues in its implementation.

Yazidis today celebrate their religious festival, the Îda Êzî. I was really glad to visit the #Yazidi religious site of Lalish this week, in Duhok Governorate's mountain valleys. Approx 2,500 #Yazidi women + children remain unaccounted for following ISIS' enslavement in 2014. 🕯️

Here is my piece on the struggles facing one family: Khansa - grandmother - living alone with 4 of her grandchildren: all held by ISIS for varying lengths. Barely a week before I met them, her eldest - Roza, 18 - had returned from Syria after almost 8 yrs.

At today's @Free_Yezidi @SinjarAcademy event in Khanke, family members + officials mourned the lives destroyed by the #Yazidi genocide, eight years ago. Down the hill ≈20,000 survivors live in sweltering tents, still; just one camp housing the hundreds of thousands of displaced.

Gas flaring in #Iraq is causing a deadly public health crisis. Ali Hussein Jaloud, 21, grew up next to Basra's Rumaila oilfield: one of @bp_plc ’s largest sites. He died on Friday from leukaemia, linked to the flaring which releases carcinogens. @Jeky_Kelly

Such incredible history. 😍 On the bank of the Tigris near #Baghdad 's Shuhada Bridge, the al-Mustansiriya Madrasah was completed in *1234 CE*, marking a new stage in the development of higher education in the Islamic World. It was named after the Caliph al-Mustansir Billah. #Iraq

Fawziya was 11 when the sound of gunfire startled her awake on August 3, 2014; the day nine years ago today that ISIS launched a genocidal campaign against her Yazidi community in the Sinjar region. Fawziya, her mother & siblings have been displaced since.

On the right-hand wall of this image, taken by @Abdxeyad , are photographs of the four sons & grandson that Haj Mohammed al-Khashali, behind his counter in Shabandar coffee shop, has outlived. They were killed in 2007, when a car bomb tore through Baghdad's Mutanabbi Street. #Iraq

✨ Remarkable trip to the ancient site of #Hatra , capital of the first Arab Kingdom, and to learn more about Iraq's history. Founded around 200BC, Hatra was a flourishing trading city located between the Roman & Parthian empires (and more recently, a site ISIS failed to destroy).

For many in Iraq, what is promised + delivered falls short. Last year the #Yazidi Survivors Law was passed to support survivors of ISIS languishing in dire conditions; due to political chaos in Baghdad, the federal budget has been kicked down the road + there is still no funding.

@MartinSLewis @bbc5live I'm finally beginning to miss London a bit, but quality of life in Berlin is better. Once you figure out German bureaucracy + tax systems, the lower living costs & higher public services are worth it. I think the main thing is that you can actually afford to earn less/ have time.

Lack of employment regulations in #Iraq and the Kurdistan Region mean humiliation & exploitation is rife. Mumen’s situation isn’t even close to some of the worse examples of abuse, e.g. for Syrian refugees or Iraqi IDPs, with fewer rights and greater need.
