War of 1812 was started by America... Britain had no war aims other than for it to be over as quickly as possible & to not lose anything as they were dealing with Napoleon at the time & frankly on the scale of things he was a lot more important & a lot bigger...

Real talk, the war of 1812 was not a victory for Britain. It was an embarrassing failure that massively outweighs our President's mansion getting burned down. Britain failed to stop American expansion, a primary goal, failed to achieve a Brit run buffer state, failed to force

So of all the #PrincePhilip tribute pictures, this stuck with me... he was a character, he had enough good points but certainly was no angel, he has enough flaws, but certainly not a devil... he was a soul of service & duty, who gave all of himself to whatever role he was called

Did nail it with the Batch 3 though, which added a 4.5-inch gun and a Goalkeeper 30mm CIWS, and replaced the four Exocet with eight Harpoons. One of my favourite designs.

There is just a small problem with this, whilst a lot of NATO interests & Security issues overlap with Britain's, many do not... e.g. Falklands, Britain's connections with South East Asia & other "out of area commitments" as they were called in the 1980s...

This sounds to me like someone's realise we need more subs, but now they want to cut the already not big enough surface fleet to pay for it... when neither surface nor subsurface have enough units for their missions... this shouldn't be the question posed:

There is a lot to agree with in this #Thread , but what it misses is that the £1billion price tag includes the development costs, the actual build costs of the ships are much lower than that; so if 12 type 45 had been built we would probably be talking about £700million destroyers
@nicholadrummond

Royal Navy ships have never been more capable than they are today. Type 45 Destroyers and Type 23 Frigates are undoubtedly world class. The Type 26 Frigate / Global Combat Ship will raise the bar even higher. The trouble is these ships are approaching £1 billion each. 1/10

Its these ships & personnel UK is really feeling loss of now, 8 Type 45s & 16 Type 23s would have allowed RN 24 escorts, along the 2,720 extra that staying at 36,000 would have granted, would all equate to extra couple of escorts available without disruption of refit/training

Speaking of the Bismarck torpedo defense system, I find it ironic that the Italian Pugliese System functioned as intended and yet is regarded as the worst of the Axis designs. German and Japanese torpedo defense schemes often underperformed in practice, yet they get a free pass.

Not every Warship needs to be 1st rate, the majority in the 1700s were 3rd & 6th rates. Whilst I will always argue for fitting WITH rather than FOR, it's important to arm a vessel for role & likely missions; not to make a false shibboleth of weapon quantity over ship suitability

What makes the movie “Top Gun” so timeless? It takes elemental themes—parents and children, humans and nature, individual desires and communal demands—and funnels them into its hero’s journey. (From 2021)

Ok, so I'm not going to subtweet anyone or anything like that but... if anyone is actually managing to find something that makes them happy under the current circumstances, whether that is work, family or long planned projects - lets just be happy that there is some happiness

Key word needs to be added "Officially"... in the far east & during WWII boarding actions, armaments carried could be quite diverse and some ships found an awful lot of sharp pointy things appeared from nowhere...

#OnThisDay 1936 @RoyalNavy removed the Cutlass from operational use by its sailors. It would still be retained for ceremonial duties and is still held by some ships and establishments for this purpose. #handstoboardingstations

I have 2: 1) The Regia Marina was a more balanced & capable navy than the Kriegsmarine at start of WWII 2) RN was probably the best in the world in 1939 at ASW, but they'd been limited to preparing for war in 10yrs time till 1932 officially(36 in truth) so didn't have the hulls

Please stop rewriting #History it may make you feel better short term, but long term it makes it that much easier to forget the lessons it has taught - in some case lessons paid for with tremendous sacrifice

So according to this you only need 1000 books to equal a library... @Drachinifel does this mean you & I should qualify for government funding as we each run national library level quantities of books?

It's an honest question, but from reading the comments... I have a lot of work to do... battleships make sense because they can kill anything below them on the food chain; even aircraft carriers if those can't trade distance for time... look at the amount of air power directed1/3

"Stupid question on ships by aviation historian time" I`m perplexed about Battleships, as far as I can see, they spend their lives trying not to be sunk in embarrasing circumstances, and apart from as a status symbol, I`m at a loss to understand why you`d ever have wanted one?

Germany & Italy lost because of RN maritime superiority...Arctic Convoys, Battle of the Atlantic & the Battle of the Mediterranean... the victories on the ground finished the war, but those were built on a foundation of seapower...

Ok, this is terrible, a) it's not every recorded battle in history, not even every European battle, let alone others, b) people use poorly researched/captioned history like this to justify so many silly ideas & c) it has not context, no geography, no dates... ergo its no use
