I just saw a TikTok video where a reader was debating if she should rate a book less because a character had a THOUGHT that offended the reader. For those of us in the business of writing about the ugly parts of human behavior, this is what we're up against. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Well, needless to say I wasn't expecting this tweet to blow up - but I understand why it resonates w writers & readers. The bottom line here is fiction is fiction, authors aren't their characters - and valuable ideas only exist w the juxtaposition of the negative & positive. 1/2

My doc prescribed Wellbutrin. If u had asked if I was depressed I'd have said No. But for years I've been disconnecting/compartmentalizing. Great news wouldn't make me happy. My mother's death didn't make me sad. I've been in a weird state for too long & finally hit the wall. 1/2

Tomorrow I'm going to see my doctor & I hope she can help. My brain has been declining since '17. I've tried to write it off as menopause, being isolated, etc but this can't continue. I feel empty & disconnected & I just go through the motions unable to think or feel. It's weird.

#BeforeMyBookDeal I... - wrote five other novels - queried hundreds of agents - entered #PitchWars 3 times (got in on the 3rd try) And that was all after decades of writing unsold screenplays, short stories, stage plays, etc. It took 30 years to be an "overnight success" - haha!

Final thoughts on this for now: I feel somewhat vindicated by how bothered I was after my hour w/ Chance - my sensitivity is an imperfect barometer, but it wasn't wrong. And I'm incredibly grateful to the horror community & everyone who has commented & been so supportive. ❤️

I admit, I'm a little envious seeing all the writers w/ their supportive spouses. Living alone & having chronic energy/health issues can be extremely difficult - especially after getting kicked off disability when my 2nd book sold & now having to fully support myself via writing.

BUNNY UPDATE: The bunny made it the Wildlife Rescue place! They're going to let her rest, then give IV fluids & assess. Their 1st guess was something neurological- apparently rabbits are prone to neuro. injuries (even from fighting each other). I can check on her in a few days!

I've been thinking a lot about how limited I feel because if my characters think/say unpopular things many readers will think those are my beliefs/opinions. I #write ugly characters at times but in the modern world you can get cancelled for expressing the "wrong" things. 1/2

I've never thought I was depressed, & was resistant because of how my mother used meds. But it became clear I couldn't go on like this. My animals are the only thing I've cared about. My confidence keeps sinking & everything I've tried on my own hasn't worked. I hope this helps.

This is an important thread for authors. I experienced such a reality disconnect after selling BABY TEETH: I'm "self employed" but have little info & almost no control over anything that happens in my career. Now I intentionally take my time w/ the WRITING! That part is MINE!
