Thank you to

An angel that put a small check into our round sent us an Airtable with 30+ relevant angels he can intro us to.
Itβs not about check size, itβs able the value they provide.
βIβm hiring engineers, do you know of any looking?β
1. No
2. If I did, I would be hiring them.
3. If I send them to you, I probably already passed on them.

Your days are either 1-2s or 9-10s nothing in between. Investor calls are often the same.
I'm stoked to announce that I've joined the product team at
@beondeck

Most startups can't think 5 years ahead and On Deck has a 50-year vision. The vision is both exciting and scary at the same time.
What is On Deck?
Glad you asked.
Here's an ongoing thread of threads, summarizing:
π Where we came from
β¨ Where we are going
π What we are building

A few years back I was interviewing for new jobs and I ran an experiment to test out how important a personal network is when looking for a new job.
Here is what I did and what I foundπ

This message to
@ShaanVP
changed the trajectory of my career and I'll be forever grateful to him
@RomeenSheth
and
@benmlevy
for the work we did at the fund.
What's a moment that changed your life?
I'll start - I was on vacation in Palm Springs at a vegan cafe, sitting with my wife enjoying breakfast when I heard a familiar voice.
I glanced at the door and spotted a bald guy walking out, and instantly recognized it was Andy

I just onboarded to
@deel
and I gotta say the experience/feature-set is incredible.
In the past, I've used Remote to be paid internationally and it's like I just upgraded from a Corolla to a Model S.
Don't stop moving the bar forward

Today I decided it was time to spin up a Metabase instance.
I wanted to self-host to save $$.
I went to my

3 min later I'm set up.
Railway is a game-changer.

I've got a flight on Thursday flight and will spend the whole flight reviewing applications. I'll see how many I can do.
I'm shocked by what
@steventey
is doing at
@dubdotco
.
He is one of the fastest-moving and creative founders I have ever worked with. It's honestly insane the speed at which he ships.
His speed of execution and iteration will make Dub a success, mark my words.
Just met with
@alanaagoyal
and I'm blown away.
Her focus on backing top founders as their first investor and being the most valuable investor on the cap table is inspiring. I can't wait to see what she accomplishes with
@basecasevc
.
It's been 5 years since I did
@ycombinator
and I'm honestly shocked at how many amazing people I've met and things I've done because of that experience.

@posthog
looks incredibly promising.
Has anyone switched from the typical tracking stack:
Mixpanel/Amplitude + Segment/Rudderstack + Fullstory + Optimizely/Launch Darkly?
Any limitations? Anything I should consider before making the move?
Iβm launching a Substack!
Recently, Iβve been writing more and Iβm excited to share it publicly.
Iβll be writing about:
- investing
- startups
- founder stories
- frameworks

Me: *explaining something in the startup space and mentions Slack*
Friend: "What is Slack?"
Me: Damn, that's a nice life where you don't know what Slack is.
I did this.
In 3 months, I built and sold the product. All with just Next.js and Supabase. The burn was only $25/month.
@nextjs
(with
@vercel
) +
@supabase
is bliss π
We really live in a golden age of web development πβ‘
For only $45/month you can build an app using Next.js and Supabase, host it on Vercel, and scale it to 100 000 users without a single worry about scaling issues or any complicated DevOps setup ππ°
And it's free to start!
Excited to launch Toad (), a fun little side project for shortening your URLs.
Built with Next.js,
@tailwindcss
and
@supabase_io
hosted on
@vercel
.
Props to the Supabase team for building an amazing product.

I 36x'd my followers from 80 to 2,900 in one year. That's 35% MoM growth for 12 months.
Using the current run rate, 12 months from now, I'll be at 110,000 followers and I'll be ready to raise a strong Series A from tier 1 funds.
Here is how I did it:
I love Toronto but I do miss SF. The number of incredible people I met today is next level. The energy here is palpable. I hope we can some day match that quantity and quality of people like this in Toronto. Itβs definitely moving in the right direction.
I just went through the process of interviewing with startups for a new job and my main takeaway is: most startups suck at interviewing.
Here are my top pieces of advice for startup founders hiring early employees:

The thought of launching a web app without using Next.js on

Toronto is getting a massive new retreat with saunas and ice baths
I'm building a new side project, and every person I've mentioned it to wants to be a customer. I'm building it for just myself, but it's a good sign I should release it publicly.
On June 4th, 2021, I was invited to
@robbiebent1

This day set me on a trajectory change personally that I'll be forever grateful for. The biggest thing to come out of it for me is - do hard things. I've learned how much better the rest of
Being a founder building a marketplace startup is a rollercoaster.
Matching supply and demand is hard when you start with zero on both sides. It's an uphill battle convincing the first suppliers to join an empty marketplace.
It requires grit and perseverance in the early days
I get a huge number of emails between 8-11pm and it's because it's all the founders who work hard all day then run through all of their emails at the end of the day. It's crazy how consistent it is. I never expect a founder to reply to me mid-day.
We did a hackathon at the

Technical Co-founder Needed!
I know a Brooklyn-based founder with 2 previous exits (FB +Google) running a search for a technical co-founder; expects to finish a pre-seed round next week. The company is a platform focused on creator/passion economy & ed tech, and is at MVP stage.
My first post is live, check it out and let me know your thoughts.

It's incredible how many amazing founders we have in the Toronto ecosystem.
Fun fact: Jason made a custom hot sauce called "The Hottest Startups in Canada" for all the people
I just had a call with someone I respect but only know a little through our few interactions. In a 30-min call she went from a friendly call to:
- an investor
- a user (providing incredible feedback)
- and she might end up being our first user paid on the platform
Incredible!
Startups today and more so in the future:

Bad day for Entrepreneurship in Canada π¨π¦π. Capital gains tax rate is increasing from a 50% inclusion to 66%.
