Hello, friends!
Beyond Yacht Rock is putting the brakes on a little bit this year due to family and work issues. We will be releasing episodes and minisodes intermittently and have some cool stuff planned for later in the year, so donโt unsubscribe! Thanks for your support.
I love Yacht Rock music so much and my heart is so broken that weโve failed to tell the world what it is and now idiots use it as an excuse to play cheap garbage. ๐
Ironic that this is a show with a theme of relevance anxiety, yet you guys have kept ours at bay for fifteen years. Thanks to all of you for keeping the fire!
Episode 1 of โYacht Rockโ premiered on Channel 101 on this day in 2005. The series starred JD Ryznar, Hunter Stair, Dave Lyons and โHollywoodโ Steve Huey, and rekindled interest in the smooth music and artists that comprise the genre.
Honestly, if we made yacht rock today, armed with our greatly expanded knowledge of the genre and musicians, it probably wouldn't be as funny or fun to make.
Happy 45 years to โMinute by Minuteโ!ย Originally released on December 1, 1978, this was the 8th studio album by
@TheDoobieBros
that won a total of 4 Grammys. This RIAA 3X Platinum album featured many more timeless hits, including the No. 1 Billboard hit, โWhat A Fool Believes".
Y'all might want to resubscribe to Beyond Yacht Rock on your podcast apps. What will probably the very, absolutely last final episode released under that podcast name will be dropping Wednesday.
โLeave the Door Openโ is maybe the yachtiest song to win song and record of the year since the early 80s. It may not make the boat, but itโs complex pop music with real instruments by some of the best of the best, so Iโll take it as a win for yacht rock.
New Rule: anyone that was cool with the GOP inventing $2 trillion out of thin air for freebies for people with yachts that have tiny yachts inside doesnโt get to demand how we pay for people who need chemotherapy treatments.
Coined in 2005 by me and my friends, spending our free weekends working our asses off to make a fun webshow about our favorite music that we found the perfect name for.
1) This article spreads false yacht rock
2) "Yacht Rock is what we want it to be." Fuck you.
3) Nick doesn't even like Yacht Rock.
4) These fuckers stopped Christopher Cross from doing a Yacht Rock tour.
5) Once again, eat a dick
@YachtRockRevue
This article was chugging along and lost me at the Pina Colada Song, saying Rupert Holmes displays the musicianship of Steely Dan, which is like saying your favorite planet is a sandwich.
TIL that the first time Michael McDonald met Warren G, Warren was in a car (In NYC) and when he saw Michael on the street, stopped to talk to him for a couple minutes. So we got it SPOT ON in the webshow. Warren G WAS in a car when he first met Michael McDonald.
He was also in a state of crisis over his own relevance and the sketch edged him to his lowest point, drinking whiskey in the alley with Messina while enduring Loggins and Steve Perry try to turn him on to rock music using karate.
There is a fundamental misunderstanding of what
#YachtRock
is.
@Spotify
if youโre going to use a term you didnโt invent, perhaps consult with the people that did!!
@yachtrock
A classic. This cat was an outlier to the scene who managed to create high quality yacht rock on his own. He shocked many with his whiteness and soothed more with his smoothness.
Bobby passed away here at home. I held him tight in my arms as he left us. I am forever heartbroken. Thanks to all of you for your many prayers over the years. He had been "FLOXED," it took his health over the last 6 years and 2 months. Rest with God, my Love. -Mary Caldwell
Erik, you're being ignorant. Not only is late 70s Steely Dan Yacht Rock, Steely Dan is the primordial ooze from which Yacht Rock emerged. And Yacht Rock isn't an insult. This is like wanting to fight a guy for calling your Ferrari a "precision, well-made vehicle."
RIP to the Bach. A composer who elevated pop music complexity, clearing the waters for yacht. Every yacht rocker loved him. (Fagen appreciated his Stravinsky-esque angularities - duh.) Then, he became a yacht rocker himself. And won a prize for it!
Hall & Oates aren't Yacht Rock, so they aren't invited, but how bout a Doobies reunited with Michael McDonald/Steely Dan/Loggins/Toto festival. Undercards like Bill Champlin/Marc Jordan/JaR/Pablo Cruise. Ugh. Sorry. You see why people have to get Yacht Rock right? WHAT A SHOW!
Until we can get to the bottom of why is down once we hear from Patrick Kolodgy (email sent!) here is the original google spreadsheet we updated live while we recorded.
We will do regular Yacht or Nyachts when BYR ends, in fact, we plan on spinning Yacht or Nyacht into it's own podcast. Also, you guys are gonna love our new podcast idea.
Jeff Porcaro, the most prolific drummer in yacht rock, passed away on this day in 1992. Aside from his work as a founding member of Toto, his drumming can be heard on numerous YR tracks, including โI Keep Forgettinโโ, โMorninโโ, โFMโ, โTurn Your Love Aroundโ and โBad Sneakersโ.
Joni Mitchell pulling her music from Spotify to protest Joe Rogan means Joe Rogan caused this top 10 Michael McDonald background vocal performance to be that much harder to get to, so
@yachtrock
is now officially censuring Joe Rogan.
Happy Birthday to the Seal King! Rooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Michael McDonald was born on this day in 1952. After beginning his career as a backing vocalist with Steely Dan, McDonald was the frontman of the Doobie Brothers. He went solo in 1982. McDonaldโs unmistakable baritone, songwriting and keyboard playing helped define Yacht Rock.
A dad taking an instrument away from his girl and putting a doll in her hand. People telling girls they'll never be as good as (fill in the blank man). Men not taking female musicians seriously because they just want to fuck them. Sexism is systemic, deep rooted and discouraging.
โI Keep Forgettinโ (Every Time Youโre Near)โ was Michaelโs hit single off of his debut solo album โIf Thatโs What It Takesโ. The song peaked at number 4 on the
@billboard
Hot 100 andย was later sampled in Warren G and Nate Doggโs 1994 single โRegulate.โ
Hey Gang. We're launching 2 new podcasts.
The first one is called The Yacht or Nyacht Podcast- just rating songs on the yachtski scale. We put a rough cut of the first episode on our patreon Just $2 to join.
Congrats to Young Gun Silver Fox for their first show in L.A. at the Troubadour last night. The band was fantastic and the crowd was electric. Such a thrill to see so many people going out of their minds for Fender Rhodes music.
โMoonlightingโ premiered on ABC on this day in 1985. The showโs theme song, sung by Al Jarreau, was released as a single in 1987. It reached
#23
on the Billboard Hot 100 on July 18, 1987 and is certified yacht rock.
Dear
@coastalliving
,
1) Quibble? Fuck you.
2) Ultimate my ass.
3) Donโt shout us out then toss us aside and kick us in the balls with this crap list of random songs
4) Iโm so sick of this shit
5) Youโve made me never want to live near the coast
Yacht is a genre that draws from Jazz and R&B, so there's soul and complex arrangements. Lyrically, Yacht is dark, bitter and full of hopeless despair. Very few sweeping strings, much e-piano and e-guitar. Air Supply's sentimental with simple songs and the wrong sound. Questions?

has docked on Ch. 17 & summer can officially begin! โต๐๐ค Pina coladas optional but recommended (not while you're driving!) ๐๐น
I donโt know anything about art but imagine if everyone started hanging jackson pollocks in the impressionist gallery. And you wrote the first book coining the term expressionism. As an intellectual with a strong, thought out point of view, youโd go insane.
