The Battle of Culloden was fought #OnThisDay in 1746. The Graves of the Clans are stone markers erected in 1881 around the site of the battle to commemorate the clans involved. You can find out more on the @HistEnvScot Battlefield Inventory:

At 480 years old, we reckon the fountain at #LinlithgowPalace is the oldest surviving fountain in Britain. It was restored in 2005 & we got it working again for the first time in a century. See it in action today and every Sunday in July & August!

The Broch of Gurness is looking 💯 from above! This impressive Iron Age complex is one of the most outstanding examples of a later prehistoric settlement to survive in Scotland. It's one of at least 10 brochs that line the shores of Eynhallow Sound, Orkney.

#BlackFriday is all well and good but we reckon #BlackDouglasFriday would be even better! Sir James Douglas was a knight, feudal lord and one of the chief commanders during the Wars of Scottish Independence. Historian Fiona Watson described him as "the radge of the millennium."

Dunadd Fort rises proudly from Moine Mhor – the ‘great moss’ – an expanse of bog that carpets the southern end of Kilmartin Glen. It was home to a fort 2,000 years ago, and a royal power centre of Gaelic kings in the 500s to 800s AD.

Tolquhon is one of the most picturesque of Grampian’s castles. The oldest part is a tower house of the early 1400s, and the castle’s lavish decorations include carved human figures on a twin-towered gatehouse. Have you visited? Let us know what you thought! #AWindowOnScotland

It's all about island folklore this #FolkloreThursday . A Norse church and post-medieval settlement can be found on the uninhabited Orcadian island of Eynhallow. It is said to be frequented by the finfolk, sea-dwelling shape-shifters from an underwater world called Finfolkaheem.

We reckon St Clement's Church on #Harris is one of our hidden gems. It was built as the burial place of the MacLeod Clan. When Alasdair 'Crotach' MacLeod (8th Chief of MacLeod) died in 1547, his body was laid to rest in a splendid tomb here.

#OTD in 1543 the 9 month old infant Mary Stuart was crowned Queen of Scotland in the Chapel Royal at @stirlingcastle . Mary was just 6 days old when her father James V died, leaving her next in line to the Scottish throne. It is said she ‘howled’ non-stop through the ceremony.

#OTD 1305: Sir William Wallace was executed in London. One of the earliest memorials to Wallace overlooks the River Tweed a short walk from Dryburgh Abbey. Erected by the 11th Earl of Buchan, it was unveiled on 22 September 1814, the anniversary of the Battle of Stirling Bridge.

#OnThisDay in 1542, Mary, Queen of Scots was born in Linlithgow Palace. It was a bitterly cold December and a deep layer of snow covered the palace, peel and loch. Only six days later Mary became queen after the death of James V.
