Evangelical Protestant. Former civil servant and political adviser. Happy husband, dad and grandad. Jim Reeves fan. Liverpool FC. Wild man for the puns.
Wonderful news - my niece Judith has just been found alive and well and is back in the care of her family. We have been greatly moved by the messages of support and concern and the prayers of our many friends on...
After the horror massacres of 7 October when many unionists and Protestants were queuing up to “stand with Israel” some of us warned of the dangers of Netanyahu’s policies and his scorched earth strategy. How right we were. This madness must stop.
Some so-called “Protestants” making dreadful comments about Conor Murphy. As an evangelical Protestant Christian I wish him a full and speedy recovery.
A certain attention seeker suggests that the entire Belfast Twelfth should go to Ardoyne. This is the same demonstration that Orange leaders have been considering curtailing because of anti social behaviour. Just think about this.
Netanyahu should have gone by now. His government is a dysfunctional disgrace. He failed to prevent October 7 and he has failed his people ever since. He lacks support in Israel. Why are so many Ulster Protestants offering him unconditional support?
The “loyalist” paramilitaries having been leaving the stage since about 1994. They are thugs and gangsters who have been pandered to by some unionist politicians and others for far too long.
I rejoiced at the collapse of Stormont in 1974 after the loyalist strike. But where did it take us? Tonight I suspect some loyalists will be rejoicing. Have we learned nothing in 50 years?
I note that a certain unionist blogger of much younger vintage than me is doing what I used to always do when a deal was done. He’s quoting Kipling’s Ulster 1912 and warning of betrayal. I’m older and wiser now.
Irish unity is within “touching distance” as a nationalist FM is poised to come into office for the first time, according to Mary Lou McDonald. Dreadfully unhelpful comment at a time when sensitivity is crucial. That “First Minister for all” idea hasn’t lasted too long.
The Stormont deal - I have concerns in several areas but there are some positives and I’m prepared to support it. Unionists and Nationalists need to accept certain realities. We share this piece of land and must make compromises for the sake of our children and grandchildren.
One of the speakers at the Ballyclare anti protocol rally said that he’d been coming to protests in the town for about 12 years. It almost sounded like some sort of hobby! The first ones apparently were the flegs. Building on that success the protocol will be gone in no time!
So many MLAs seem incapable of avoiding simple grammatical errors. In almost every interview it’s we done, we seen, have went and so on. I know there are more important things to be annoyed about, but it’s still very annoying!
Remembering my good friend and fellow student Edgar Graham, cruelly murdered by IRA terrorists at Queen’s University Belfast on Wednesday 7 December 1983
When devolution was restored, you’d have thought that the health service crisis, including waiting lists, would have dominated debate and news. Instead it’s Casement Park.
Some members of the Israeli Cabinet want war with Iran. They must have a death wish. The well-meaning “I stand with Israel” folk here in Ulster need to think all this through very carefully.
I’ve known Jim Allister personally for over half a century. In more recent years our views have differed in several areas, but he is a man of decency, honesty and integrity. Some of the attacks on him reflect badly on those who are launching them.
Not sure how anyone could be genuinely impressed by the “humble address”. Smoke and mirrors. And another reminder of how little interest there really is in NI. We’re the unwanted children of the Union.
@JonnySwift97
It’s usually called discussion, debate and conversation. I’ve never accused anyone of attention seeking at all until a certain prolific blogger accused me of it. I use it here to highlight the irony.
Attacks on places of worship, whether Free Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, Muslim or whatever, are totally unacceptable. They are an attack on the valued principle of civil and religious liberty and must surely be regarded as hate crimes.
Why has BBC Newsline not even mentioned Suella Braverman’s reference in her letter to the NI Protocol? I’d have thought it was significant enough for headline news but it was completely ignored. There was however time for coverage of humming noises in Omagh.
To those who say we must stand and fight against the protocol and WF, I share your feelings of hurt and betrayal, but show me a fight that we’ve won since 1972.
It’s quite right for unionism to say that nationalists would never accept a hard border in Ireland. But they don’t have to - for the border is in the Irish Sea. That’s the reality and I have yet to hear one practical suggestion as to how that can or will be changed.
Belfast city centre looking well this afternoon. Its a massive contrast with a few decades ago. We still have political problems but we are in a much better place and, for the sake of our children and grandchildren, we need to build on that.

I only met him once when on a flight to London. We chatted the whole way. I’m a founder member of the DUP but have always respected Seamus Mallon. His book “A shared home place” contains some very big challenges for unionists and nationalists. Sympathy to his family and friends.
We are in shock, but those charged are innocent until proven guilty. Meanwhile, a family is suffering and we need to exercise charity and restraint. If we are Christians we should praying for all involved. “Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.” Ps 34:13
To those in NI who are getting very excited about the pro Unionist credentials of this dying conservative government, I would simply say, remember Boris and all his works. And also remember that this current crew are part of those nefarious works.
Fond memories of our good friend Edgar Graham murdered by Republican terrorists at Queen's University Belfast on 7 December 1983. Thirty-five years on and no one has ever been brought to justice.
@ArnoldCarton
What an act of Christian charity it would be to say we have the right to walk the King’s highway but we’ll reach out in love to our Roman Catholic neighbours and not assert that right. The same thing should happen at Ardoyne. We need the spirit of the 1859 revival.
I think most people already knew that Kingsmills was a nakedly sectarian attack. It happened at a time of tit for tat sectarian attacks in the area. But SF who claim to be non sectarian now need to own up to the sectarianism of the IRA.
Cancelling our church services was an extremely difficult decision. But it was the right one. Churches must adhere to Government advice on meetings in order to save life. But some say they will open by “faith”. It’s nothing to do with faith. It’s gross irresponsibility.
There are good folks in UUP but the party appears leaderless and clueless. Robin Swann should not have been reappointed Health Minister. Tim Collins should not be standing. And why was his NL piece not cleared in advance by the party?
Another political giant has fallen. No matter what our perspective on politics, no-one can deny that John Hume was one of the most influential and significant figures during the darkest days in the history of NI. He was also a man of peace. Condolences to his family and friends.
The call to all NI Christians - “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty”
I said it a couple of years ago and I'll say it again. Bonfires filled with tyres and bonfires that threaten houses are acts of gross irresponsibility. Such monstrosities have nothing to do with culture of any sort.
The awfulness of Motor Neurone disease has been highlighted on BBC News this evening, and the honesty and dignity of the young mum who is a victim is very moving to behold.
@SJAMcBride
The Union has changed. And I don’t think it well ever be restored to its pre.-Protocol position. That fundamental reality has led me to the journey I’m on.
Miriam and I are delighted to share the news of the safe arrival of our latest grandchild, Hannah Miriam McElroy, born 17 October 2019, 7lb 2oz, in the SWAH in Enniskillen. A daughter for John and Rachel and a sister for Thomas. We are greatly blessed.
Comment from a Facebook friend that I must share - “Bizarre that kids in NI will be given language lessons on how to talk like a Ballymoney man after 2 pints!”
The PM and Health Secretary have tested positive. The burden of responsibility on these men is enormous. The Bible commands us to pray for those in authority so it’s incumbent upon us to pray for wisdom and healing to be given to both men. Any other attitude is anti Christian.
The NI Executive, NHS and, from my own personal experience this morning, the Ulster Hospital at Dundonald, are to be commended for an extremely efficient Covid-19 vaccination programme for those of us in the 65-69 age group.
If a health minister can’t/won’t implement an agreed budget, why is he in government and not in opposition? Could only happen in NI! If in Westminster he’d surely resign or be sacked.
Israel having seemingly failed to foresee October 7 is now making a bad situation worse by the day. Disaster is being heaped upon disaster and tragedy upon tragedy.
A warm welcome to our latest grandchild, Freya Isabel Dodds, born this morning in the Ulster Hospital and weighing in at 7lb 7oz. A sister for Henry and George. Mum and baby well. We are richly blessed.
When you consider Tusk's carefully scripted comment and the social media follow-up by others who agreed with him, I strongly suspect that if similar comments were directed against other groups, there would already be hate speech investigations.
@SJAMcBride
NIO is focusing on the leak but the real scandal is the secret payment. Utterly disgraceful. And this man is serving the parades commission. Outrageous.
I hear the sound of distant drums....it's lambegs in the leafy suburbs of east Belfast. Rarely heard here - but what a wonderful sound! I feel as if I'm back home in Ballymoney!
On my 70th birthday I paid a visit to Valley Barbers at Gilnahirk. I met a man who’ll soon be 90. An absolute gentleman. A wonderful encounter. As we talked about the passing of time, I was reminded that age is only a number. I left the barbers with less hair and lighter of foot.
Just listened to the useful short ‘matter of the day’ debate in NI Assembly yesterday on cancer and cancer services brought by
@SorchaEastwood
. Some sobering contributions including one by
@stewartcdickson
So one of the greatest disasters as Chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, tells Sunak to bring back the king of the great disasters, Boris Johnson. It all makes sense….
Wife of Coleraine manager Oran Kearney condemns ‘vile, sectarian abuse’ directed at family following poor results
This is disgusting. What a terrible indictment of some sections of loyalism.
My big excitement today was to receive a first ever email from one of my grandchildren. Holly sent me a message asking me how I was. (We only live round the corner but these are strange times!)
The sketch at the end of Alan Partridge's show last night which featured an Irishman singing rebel songs has caused a bit of controversy. I thought it was hilarious.
Booking the MOT is a disaster. The system’s not fit for purpose. Driving today in rural Co Down I couldn’t believe the number of potholes. DFI and Executive need to tackle all this urgently.
The whole issue of abortion is so sensitive and emotive that it behoved whichever side won the referendum to display some dignified restraint in victory. Sadly that hasn't happened. It's a reflection of the decline in manners in modern society.
