The narrative that Caitlin Clark is saving the WNBA is simply false.
The league doubled its revenue in the five years before Clark showed up. That was during a pandemic!
Just because you just noticed the league when Clark arrived does not mean no one else was watching before.
Forbes and I have decided to end things.
In the end, I wrote 93 articles for Forbes
49 on women's sport. 44 on men's sports (that was intentional).
Average women's story had 8,185 views.
Average men's story had 4,117 views
An audience does exist for women's sports stories!
A thread to remind you the WNBA still has issues with travel.
And a reminder that the NBA -- who claims it owns 70% of this league -- has the resources to solve this problem.
game ended in Seattle at 6:30p. We’ve been at the airport since 7:45p. Flight was SUPPOSED to depart at 10:30p (had an hr layover in ATL, then to IND). Delayed till 11:30p. Board the plane, but now we just had to deplane for “mechanical issues”.
If Shannon Sharpe could tell me who is on the Olympic roster without looking, I would be shocked.
You want to grow the game? Start by learning about the game.
Shannon Sharpe on Caitlin Clark being left off of Team USA: "Are we really trying to grow the game? Because this is the most popular women's basketball player in the world and it ain't close... So are we really trying to grow the game? Is that what we're really trying to do? Or
According to Bloomberg, the WNBA doubled its revenue from 2019 to 2023. This is before Caitlin Clark showed up. The league was already growing dramatically before this moment.
Never before has the WNBA been given this level of exposure on television.
And ratings have responded.
This suggests that WNBA supporters were very right.
An audience exists for the WNBA. There simply needed to be commitment to meet this demand.
Men need to stop thinking that men's sports were built solely by the efforts of the athletes in those sports.
Men sports have received a tremendous amount of help -- from politicians, the sports media, and rich men who didn't care about profits -- in building what we see today.
If all professional men's sports teams had to be profitable in the first 10 years their leagues existed, we would not have any men's professional sports leagues now.
When men say they expect this of women's teams what they are really saying is they don't want to invest in women.
The WNBA is officially 25 years old today.
To put the league in perspective...
The NBA was 25 years old on June 6, 1971.
In 1970-71, the NBA averaged 7,648 fans per game and had a national television deal that paid $5.5 million (to the entire league).
The WNBA now has money for charters.
They also have money to pay their players more than 10% of league revenue.
All of this is a choice. It always was just a choice.
Former LSU HC Dale Brown reportedly charted every one of Pete Maravich’s shots in college to see what he would average with a 3-point line.
Maravich would have scored a total of 4,731 career points — averaging 57.0 PPG.
Freshmen also couldn’t play varsity at this time🤯
Prediction:
If Sabrina beats Steph tonight the trolls will say he let her win.
If Steph beats Sabrina tonight the trolls will say this proves men's sports are better than women's sports.
And I will say... women don't have to beat men to be better at sports.
Average salaries in the WNBA -- if the players got 50% of the revenue -- would be at least $600,000.
In that scenario, the Las Vegas deal wouldn't be necessary.
Pay your players like you should and so many problems gets solved.
45% of football fans are women.
47% of sports fans in the United States are women.
If your ad only shows men as sports fans...
you don't know sports fans
and you don't know your market.
Revenue in the WNBA has doubled in the last five years.
The WNBA has more than enough money to pay their players enough to stop overseas trips.
If the WNBA gave just 40% of their revenue to their players, average salaries would be more than $500,000!
Many women’s basketball players go overseas to compensate for their WNBA salaries.
Ahead of her exclusive interview with WNBA star Brittney Griner — which airs tonight on
@ABC

@RobinRoberts
shares takeaways from their conversation, including on pay equity:
Tomorrow we have the Women's World Cup final.
We have the USA Softball International Cup final.
And we have four WNBA games.
You can watch women do amazing things in sports all day on Sunday.
For people who say there is no money in women's college basketball... according to the Department of Education, women's college basketball generated $974 million in revenue in 2018-19.
Only football and men's basketball generated more.
Basketball did not end tonight.
The
@WNBA
will continue all summer.
By the time we crown a champion in the WNBA, NBA training camps will be opening and that season will just be weeks away.
WNBA has a history of owners who are not emotionally involved.
Mark Davis -- owners of the Aces -- came to Connecticut to see his team win a title.
This is common in major men's sports.
Very glad to see this happen in the WNBA!
The ESPN Body issue appears to feature women and men in sports equally.
Would be great if the sports media provided equal coverage when the athletes have their clothes on and are playing their sports.
As a man who has written extensively about the WNBA and gender inequality...
not sure it looks good when the WNBA gives an award to a man for supporting the league.
Really... let's just give awards to women for building the league. Men don't need any more awards.
No matter how many times we point out WNBA revenue has doubled AND that there is zero evidence the league is losing money... the trolls just can't hear.
technically the revenue truly started increasing back in 2019 and in a span of 4 years it went from $60M to over $200M on a billion dollar valuation. 🤷🏿♀️
I don't have much interest in men's professional golf. So I think I will spend my day on twitter hunting down anyone who likes this and telling them that nobody cares.
Sounds silly right?
For women's sports, this happens constantly.
Economics would be better off with less hero-worship. Your favorite economist isn't Yoda. They are just writing stuff. Some of it might be good. Some of it... well, they are just writing.
Your reminder that we have never spent public funds for a stadium or arena dedicate solely to a professional women's team in the WNBA or NWSL.
Men's sports being more popular is NOT the free market.
It is a history of discrimination.
Governor Kathy Hochul is expected to announce a deal in which New York and Erie County pay nearly $1 billion towards a new $1.4 billion Bills stadium, per
@nypost
.
It'd be the most public money ever spent on a U.S. stadium.
It could open next to the current one as soon as 2026.
For all those men who talk about women's sports not earning the same revenue as men's sports...
It took the NCAA 50 years after Title IX to promote women's basketball the same way they were promoting the men.
50. Damn. Years.
Why are there at least 6 men's college basketball games on my TV and zero women's games?
Oh wait.. I know.
Seriously... we saw with the WNBA and NWSL this summer.
If you show women's sports, people will watch!
XFL -- a minor football league with no established fanbase -- gets primetime on ESPN AND FX.
Once again -- for the trillionth time -- the male-dominated sports media bends over backwards to promote men's sports.
They do not do this for women.
ESPN is prioritizing men's college wrestling because of the market!
It's obvious!
Men's college wrestling reported $122 million in revenue in 2019.
And women's college basketball only reported ... $942 million!
See... the market!
Right?
No matter what happens in women's sports a man will arrive to tell you there is not much interest in women's sports.
Even if the data says there is quite a bit of interest in women's sports.
Let's remember...
@Reese10Angel
is the ONLY player to grab 20+ rebounds in a professional game that lasts only 40 minutes!
The men were playing 48 minute games.
Reese stands alone!!!
At first the NBA couldn't hire Becky Hammon as a head coach because she hadn't paid her dues yet.
Now coaches -- with less experience -- are getting hired ahead of her?
Men hire men to coach women all the time.
It is long past the time when women should be hired to coach men.
Since the My Pillow guy lost business due to his ridiculous claims of election fraud... has anyone called him up and told him to stick to pillows?
Or is that just something white people say to athletes?
I think we need to recognize that WNBA teams didn't "fail" because of massive losses. They primarily failed because male owners weren't interested in suffering any losses for women's basketball.
The same men are happy to lose money on the MNBA!
James Dolan would like to remind you that he deliberately sabotaged the New York Liberty's attendance and consistently talked down that team when he was its owner.
He isn't just an awful MNBA owner.
He was one of the worst WNBA owners.
ESPN Sources: In approving a new WNBA franchise in Toronto, the WNBA Board of Governors voted 13-0 and the NBA’s Board of Governors voted 29-1. Only the New York Knicks voted against the expansion. Knicks are suing Raptors in case over alleged “theft of proprietary information."
Softball destroys the myths many men believe about women and sports.
When it comes to sports...
women are immensely talented.
women are immensely enthusiastic.
This is all on display tonight.
#wcws2019
Your periodic reminder...
The NBA has a larger audience today than the WNBA because
a. it had a 50-year head start
b. it received billions in public subsidies
c. it receives far more free media attention
It is not because people naturally love watching men bouncing a ball more.
As we watch women struggle to form a pro hockey league (and other women's sport leagues face growing pains) we should remember...
men's sports did not grow entirely due to the efforts of men.
Men received billions in public subsidies and an immense amount of free media coverage.
Remember what many men in the sports media frequently say (i.e. the men who choose what is on and what is covered):
"There is no demand for women's sports".
The data says otherwise.
But the gender-bias of decision-makers leads to less revenue for women's sports and less pay.
About 60 million women in the U.S. are sports fans.
Seeing commercials where the "sports fan" in the family is always the man simply doesn't reflect reality.
About 40% of all sports fans really are women.
Maybe it is time people writing ads pick up on this.
Many of the women of the WNBA go play in Europe/Asia as soon as the WNBA season is finished.
They come back to the WNBA when the other leagues are done.
They. Play. Year. Round.
It appears -- once again -- women are tougher than men.
Rich people: If we guarantee poor people $10,000 a year, they will never have an incentive to work again.
Same rich people: If I give my children a free elite college education, a new car, and a huge inheritance... my children's incentives won't change at all.

Ja Morant on Diana Taurasi and Skylar Diggins-Smith: “Those are two of my favorite WNBA players to watch, and it was an honor for them to accept that and exchange jerseys with me. I feel like women deserve a lot more respect for what they do in this world."
I spent the year mostly watching women's college basketball.
So I know the players, teams, etc...
Because I watched less men's basketball I know less and find the men's Final Four less interesting.
That is how being a fan works.
Lesson there someplace.
Men are the majority of coaches for women's sports teams.
Men have been broadcasting women's sports from the beginning.
Women call one NHL game and men scream that women are invading "male sports".
That level of hypocrisy and stupidity is mind-blowing.
Interesting how top male athletes recognize what top women do in sports.
And yet... men who apparently have never done anything question women in sports all the time.
Very much love this!
The WNBA doubled revenue from 2019 to 2023 (from $100 million to $200 million). This was before Clark and Reese arrived.
Yes, those players have helped.
But they did not create the league.
And the league was growing before they arrived.
A'ja Wilson, the WNBA's best player, on "The Caitlin Effect"
“I felt like I was mentally tired in that whole whirlwind of people constantly saying, ‘A’ja you’re only known because of Caitlin; we’re only here because of Caitlin. And that’s great, I get that, but while you’re here
Women are about 45% of athletes.
Women are about 45% of all sports fans.
But for men, the best sports moments have zero professional women teams. And zero college women teams.
Just two individual women mentioned.
Men are 90% of the sports media.
Hence, this result.
There has been no year in sports like 2020. Over the next few weeks, we'll look back at the biggest moments.
To start things off, let's vote on the best and brightest sports moment of the year.
🗳👇
White males are 29% of the population but about 70-80% of leadership positions.
Let's normalize saying that white males getting leadership positions in our society is not about merit.
For many, they got the job because of their race and gender.
Let's keep saying this!
Men's sports has more revenue than women's sports because men got to go first, receive immensely more public and private investment, and immensely more free media coverage.
So.... men don't DESERVE to be paid more than women simply because men's sports have more revenue.
Seattle Storm had a higher winning percentage than everyone but the Chiefs.
But they did it in a 12-team league where every team is essentially an all-star team.
So what the Storm did was more impressive than all of these teams.
As you watch tonight's game (along with everyone else), remember...
The men of the NCAA sold the broadcast rights to the women's basketball tournament for about $100 million less than it was worth.
Yes... their history of sexism led to a $100 million mistake.
This is not what the pay gap is about.
Women get less than 20% of WNBA revenue.
Men get 50% of NBA revenue.
The gap is about percentages.
Frustrating that we have to keep saying this.

Michele Roberts on the pay gap between the WNBA and NBA
“What I think we have to be realistic about in some respects is the revenue that is generated in each game. The men’s game is just much more profitable and generates more revenue than the woman’s game does."
I don't own my daughters.
So if someone wants to marry them, I am the wrong person to ask.
Seriously... we need to get away from the idea that a man must ask a father for permission.
Taurasi has won more than Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Larry Bird, etc...
If you are ranking the top basketball players in history, she belongs toward the top of that list.
Regardless of gender!
NWSL made the front page at ESPN!
Women's sports can get coverage when something bad happens.
When the games are played, though, all you get are crickets.
Esther Duflo and her husband wins a Nobel Prize and she is referred to as "wife".
People associated with econ just can't stop embarrassing the field.
We really need one basic class on how not to say stupid stuff about gender issues.
If
@WNBA
started seeing players as an investment and not a cost
a. they would increase the pay of their players and
b. maybe their very best player wouldn't get hurt in other leagues
Glad that Angel Reese was able to ease her coaches' concerns.
But the coach makes far more than Angel Reese.
If money destroyed incentives like this, shouldn't we be more concerned about Mulkey's motivation?
"Is Angel Reese hungry? She's making money like crazy. Is she gonna be hungry for another ring? "

Men are willing to invest $200 million in an expansion MLS team despite the reality that most MLS teams do not earn a profit.
Governments have given about $1 billion in subsidies to the MLS.
And in the NWSL -- a truly elite league - we get this.
The NBA has created salary restrictions at every level (league, team, individual veteran, rookie).
So, players are choosing their teams based on whether they like the GM, coach, and/or teammates.
This is a direct consequence of the NBA getting everything they wanted.
"The players have all of the leverage in every situation. I think it’s the worst thing that ever happened to professional sports on all levels."
- Anonymous GM on player empowerment in today’s NBA

Women definitely don't need to be better than men in sports for women's sports to be valid and immensely entertaining.
That being said...
when women do beat men in sports it makes me extra happy.
And that is because it makes sexist men extra sad.
Decades from now, people who write about the history of the multi-billion dollar WNBA will wonder why in the early days of the league the arrival of Caitlin Clark seemed to get players charter flights but WNBA players literally sleeping in airports didn't cause any change.
When we only consider white males for a job, no one says a word. No one does a poll. No one writes a column. No one thinks it odd.
And white males are just 29% of the population.
BREAKING: Just over three-quarters of Americans (76%) want Pres. Biden to consider "all possible nominees," while 23% want him to follow through on his commitment to nominate the first Black woman to the Supreme Court, per a new

The recent failures in minor league football remind us that men are willing to lose hundreds of millions on sports.
When the sport involves men.
But when the sport involves women, any loss is met with men telling us that sports ARE NOT a charity and a business HAS TO make money!
Every top 25 men's college basketball game is televised today.
None of the top 25 women's college basketball games are televised today.
Your daily reminder that the coverage of men and women's sports is very different.
Megan Rapinoe plays in the NWSL.
Her league was told yesterday that a $47 million investment over 9 years is too much.
Meanwhile, the expansion fee for one MLS team is $200 million.
Men love investing in men.
And as she says here, apparently white men love reading white men.
I have now done four interviews (with Vox, CNN, USA Today, and NBC) about Caitlin Clark's very low WNBA salary.
This is a table from Slaying the Trolls!! (a forthcoming book I wrote with the amazing
@NefWalker
).
The WNBA has the money to pay its top players millions!
Step one: Comment on the WNBA
Step two: Men -- with very few followers and who are not following you -- suddenly show up to tell you the WNBA is losing money and no one is watching this.
So there are lonely men just waiting to trash the WNBA?
This is their sad little life?
Women's college lacrosse generates more revenue than men's college lacrosse.
So how come when the ACC network shows "college lacrosse" this is "men's lacrosse"?
#StopMakingMenTheDefault
45% of football fans are women. Millions of girls and women follow football.
We need to stop assuming that sports are for men and only men follow sports.
The Taylor Swift Boyfriend Cinematic Universe is rife with ambitious crossovers. But her latest boyfriend has the Swifties learning about turnovers and touchdowns.
The Arizona Wildcats are in their first Final Four, but they were feeling left out when they didn't appear in a promotional video for the event posted on social media Thursday.
A men's league that wasn't likely to work was still given a tremendous amount of free media coverage and a great deal of investment.
Imagine if a fraction of this was given to women's sports.
Sources: The AAF will suspend all football operations today. New owner Tom Dundon will lose approximately $70 million on his investment. Dundon makes decision against wishes of league co-founders Charlie Ebersol and Bill Polian.

This is a chyron I would expect to see on Fox News.
The convo was more nuanced, but can we PLEASE stop letting Bill Maher dictate news cycles.
Anchor: "What do you think about what Bill Maher is saying?"
To which the only proper response is: "I don't"
Connecticut Sun players just said they are going to Europe now to play more basketball.
WNBA needs to make an effort to stop that from happening.
WNBA should be a full-time job.
Not something players do part of the year.
I have studied WNBA finances and revenues for years.
Written articles and books on the topic.
And yet, I am always amazed that social media trolls have so much more information than I have found!
Maybe academics need to spend more time researching under bridges! 😂
We are moving from the male dominated sports media ignoring women's sports to demonstrating they know nothing about women's sports.
Please. Hire someone else to do this.
So many things I want to say from this segment I don’t have enough characters
1)
@IowaWBB
is selling out every home game, MORE than the men, not “about as many as the men”
2) Caitlin will not take a “massive pay cut” in the WNBA, she will continue to have massive brand deals
To put this in perspective:
MLS averages less than 300,000 viewer per game with a peak of 1.8 million.
The women of college basketball just got 170% more that peak.
MLS wants $300 million for their broadcast rights.
NCAA gets less than $30 million for women's college basketball.
If you are discussing "college basketball", be sure to specify "men's college basketball" or "women's college basketball."
We need to end the idea that "college basketball" simply refers to the men's game.
Women have played basketball since the 19th century!
Just like men!
As so many people have noted (but apparently not anyone at CBS), the headline should be:
The husband of Julie Ertz -- who also plays sports -- came to watch her at the World Cup.
Can we just learn to identify the women by name? Is that hard to learn?
The men who get angry when you mention the WNBA saw substantial growth before this year (again, revenue doubled -- during a pandemic -- from 2019 to 2023) seem to be saying:
"We are now paying attention. So, now it matters. What happened before we got here can't be important!"
