L.A.’s landmark video store since 1985, maintaining human interaction around film + affordable access to art. Recently relaunched at the Eagle Theatre!
An unfathomable day in the film capital of the world, which will not hold that title long if we don’t invest now in saving our film culture and ensuring it exists for future generations. Hearts are out to our colleagues and the many whose lives will be most impacted. ❤️
“Old theatres are irreplaceable [...] they remind us of a day when going to the show was a more glorious and escapist experience. I think a town’s old theatres are the sanctuary of its dreams.” - Roger Ebert, who would've been 80 today
We are so excited to share this incredible news!
@vidiots
is coming back and we can’t wait for all of you to be part of it! Thank you to all of our incredible supporters, customers, partners and friends!

It's the day we've all been eagerly anticipating since we shuttered the doors of our beloved Santa Monica video store in 2017 ... Today, Vidiots is back! From 1-5pm, hop in to pick up your membership cards, meet Team Vidiots, take a pic in our photo booth, and RENT MOVIES 📀
Awards Season PSA: a year from now most people won’t remember who won or lost, two years from now the winners might not be streaming, but your local video store will always have a place for the movies you’ve made, loved, reviled, celebrated, forgotten, and have yet to discover...
“I think it’s shockingly optimistic. Who knew coming out of the pandemic that suddenly the art house cinema and independent cinema scene in Los Angeles would be as thriving as it is?” says Maggie Mackay, executive director of Vidiots

“We hope you’ll join us in helping the women of Vidiots build an inclusive shrine to movies — both projected in a community setting, and preserved on physical media.” — Karina Longworth + Rian Johnson ❤️🙏📽💿 To donate/learn more:
Grateful for this wave of sudden, broader acknowledgement that physical media is integral to the well-being of filmmakers and audiences worldwide. We’ve been championing broad access for over 37 years, and our relaunch (many years in the making) has been driven by this🧵
An essential read if you care about film and our collective access to it. This touches on our mission and why physical media and preservation are vital to the art form. Please read, and then consider supporting our Capital Campaign to relaunch Vidiots.
“I have increasing concerns about what Los Angeles is going to look like after [the pandemic] . . . We need art spaces. We’re the capitol of the film world, and we need to see that reflected in our neighborhoods again.” Vidiots ED Maggie Mackay via

The
@playhouse7
is an invaluable part of the fabric of L.A., of theatrical exhibition in the United States, and of many of our daily lives. The Laemmle family’s impact on the film arts is immeasurable, the thought of this City without this space is unthinkable. ❤️📽
Imagine what would happen to this industry and art form if we took all the money that gets pumped into awards campaigns and, instead, invested it in art house cinemas, video stores, and libraries across the country...
When we started renovations at the Eagle, our almost-100-year-old new home, we expected to find at least a few long forgotten reels of film. We didn’t, until now — a single trailer for one film, 1979’s NORMA RAE. Sure feels like a sign 🎞📽❤️

Cathy and Patty opened Vidiots 35 years ago today! We expected + wanted to celebrate this milestone with YOU at our new home, instead let’s enjoy this throwback, and plan for a HEAP of programming between now and next Nov, to celebrate the first 35 years + another 35 to come! 🥂
Thank you

The love of movies is what hits so hard. ArcLight Hollywood buzzes with the love of film, even on a Monday at 2pm, the place hums and you can meet someone, from a ticket-taker to the person in line for caramel corn, who can tell you something you didn’t know about the movies. ❤️
WE MADE THE MATCH! Endless thanks to 📽️angels

Seems like a good day for a reminder that saving video store culture is of a paramount importance for filmmakers and film lovers alike. Your local video store provides consistent, equitable, broad access for all

Physical media matters, human interaction around film matters. The internet offers no guarantee that artists' work will live on in perpetuity for audiences to discover. Big corporations are champions of their bottom lines, not of supporting film culture and audiences. We are.
Oh how we love James Caan — tough, vulnerable, raw, explosive, witty, charming, sexy-to-no-end, simply every bit of him. He’ll live forever on our screens big and small. 💔
Thanks to an incredible outpouring of support from all of YOU and our beloved Eagle Rockers, our friends at

It’s been a glorious year in film, an inspiring, electrifying, unifying year in film. No matter who walks with a fancy statue, these films required an army of artists and technicians and experts in their fields, and they changed the world.

@BenjaminJS
We are working very hard to change that, and are confident we will (also preserving the theatrical experience while we’re at it)! Think you would dig what we’re doing at Vidiots, please reach out anytime if you’d like to hear more and get involved:

Thank you for your movie, for making movies that love movies, for being you. We cannot wait to celebrate this/you at Vidiots some day soon…
HBD to us! 34 years ago today, Founders Patty and Cathy opened with 800 shrink-wrapped VHS tapes. We went on to amass over 50K titles and build an inspiring, thriving, safe cultural space for filmmakers and film lovers, and we are not stopping. Can’t wait to bring you another 34!
Vidiots has been a non-profit organization since 2012, but before that we were a small business for 27 years. Small businesses + independent art spaces are foundational for neighborhoods, cities, and towns, but they cannot exist and thrive without your support!
Lynn Shelton is a light we can’t imagine not in this world. Our hearts go out to her son and loved ones, to the endless numbers of friends and colleagues who love and work with Lynn, for all of us who she championed, and all who are so changed because of her work.
Our City of Angels has lost one of her finest, fare the well sweet Marty. Our hearts fly to Elayne and the entire family, and the team at The Dresden, you all bring magic to our lives, tonight we send it back to you with endless affection. The tune is Marty’s own “Hali.”❤️

Truly hope filmmakers will be vocal about this. Will be very sad not to have these works amongst the 50k in our collection when we re-open, alongside those that came before them. Hope the industry will rally for audiences the way it does for awards, an uncertain future if not.
weird to have both best picture and best director winners unavailable on physical media, and with no confirmed upcoming releases globally, due to both being bought/produced by streaming services; not only a blow to collectors but also to libraries that circulate to the public
We are so excited to announce that our very first BYOB (Bring Your Own Baby) screening is happening for a Tuesday matinee of CRUEL INTENTIONS. Caregivers should feel empowered to enjoy a day at the movies! And definitely amongst others who get it.
some news: today, i’m excited to launch . this ever-expanding black film archive provides history and context to over 200 black films made from 1915 to 1979 currently streaming.

Losing any theatrical space is tragic, but to lose one that provided so much access to so many, and introduced audiences to an array of documentary, independent, and international titles that now have a very uncertain future in LA is truly wrenching
Curtains, glorious curtains. Thank you to our friends S&K Theatrical Drapes, Inc., for helping make the Eagle look prettier than ever. It means the world to us to be able to support local, legacy small business in L.A. (like Vidiots!), we’re able to do it with your support!
Little time to grieve and much work to do to protect this art form and culture that has been a beacon for so many of us for over a century. We are in this fight, please support our relaunch at the historic Eagle Theatre:

Guess who cares? Your local video store. Every filmmaker and film lover should be advocating for physical media, and organizations (ahem like
@vidiots
) free of corporate interests and algorithms, working to protect the whole of cinema. Art matters, especially in harrowing times.
“Martin Scorsese’s The Film Foundation said that basically half of all American films made before 1950 are lost, & none of the major distributors are looking for them. Even worse, they said that more than 90% of films made before 1929 are lost forever.”
To our friends and colleagues who’ve dedicated their lives to connecting art and audiences, who enrich our lives everyday and in unparalleled ways — we we’re with you. For anyone able, please support your local arts non-profits. We’ll see you at the movies soon. ❤️💿📽📼
