Things I aspire to be and look for in people I invest in -
1. Think in first principles
2. Seek truth over tribe
3. Take responsibility when things go wrong
4. Learn and grow every day
5. Show kindness and gratitude
6. Share graciously and eat last
7. Be curious not judgmental
Third World Migrant here. Let’s see -
I started a company that was sold to IBM That created over 20 millionaires and resulted in tens of millions in federal taxes. Partner in a major venture capital firm. Investments that I’ve been Part of worth over $25 billion in market cap
Third world migrant here. I also had the honor of being the chairman of the National Venture Capital Association And my wife is a dean at Stanford med School Is that assimilated enough for you?
1/ I know it's going to be very fashionable for the next 24 hours to dunk on
@fast
. But please remember that there are many wonderful talented people who worked there and tried their level best to make something happen. Failure is very much a part of the startup life. Be kind
One of the lessons I've learned the hard way in venture capital is that "you can never make a good deal with a bad person". when you realize someone is toxic, just move on. Life is too short.
This is the real problem for venture capital. Not the IPO market. The reality is that 75% VC backed companies need to exit by M&A. Unless the M&A market recovers, the VC asset class is going to be challenged
Talking about my personal life is awkward and uncomfortable -at least for me. Thank you to
@rebecca_szkutak
for sharing the story. I have three additional observations to make/share -
For a whole generation of south Indians the most important word Kamala Harris said in her speech was “Chitti” - My Tamil peeps all over the world you have been recognized
Social distancing does not mean not working. Proud to say that Menlo ventures just wired $14 million To a company as part of a $20 million round When the Dow was down 2000 points yesterday. Great companies are created Independent of what the stock market is doing
Really surprised on how little I am seeing in my feed about First Republic demise. This is catastrophic for Silicon Valley. Full disclosure: I am a happy customer for over 15 years. The long-term effect of the demise of FRB and SVB is going to be very meaningful for this region
You got these VCs sitting at the Berkshire meeting, dressed up in their fancy Brunello Cucinelli suits, nodding along to Warren Buffett like they understand every word. But as soon as they step out, they're chasing 20-year-old AI entrepreneurs like they're the hottest thing since
I have had that question for a while . This video really helped me understand this tradition. i think its fantastic and inspiring. Great article about how good culture inculcates fantastic habits
I came to this country in 1990. I have been on 5 different kinds of visas. I finally got my citizenship in 2008. July 4 is always special. Our country is not perfect but has always been on the path of progress. I am insanely grateful to be a citizen of this country
It’s very clear there’s no landslide democratic victory. To all my liberal friends if you believe in democracy you got to accept the majority of this country is not ready to buy into your worldview. We cannot change peoples mind by belittling them.
In New York City, held an extensive interaction with a group of academics. They shared their views on how to further strengthen the education sector in India with a focus on skills and innovation. I talked about the transformative potential of our National Education Policy.
This might be news to some folks but you can leave the Bay area without announcing it on Twitter. It's not against the law to leave a place without announcing it on twitter
For the record I do love Miami and Texas and I'm glad people are finding them to be amazing places.
So I'm confused. I thought Twitter was going to fall apart and twitter whale was coming back. Seems to be working well in fact, feed is getting better. What am I missing?
Also, everyone who said they were leaving still seems to be here
@EricNewcomer
Let's be honest, these are just pure marketing statements meant to get coverage they really don't mean anything. Every venture fund is going to invest in AI and every venture fund is going to support American dynamism - I don't even know what that means
i don't do politics or proclamations on twitter for two reasons -
1. I don't know enough about these issues
2. No body cares or should care about my opinion.
This post broke my heart and could not stop crying. no child should ever have to write something like this
New Rule: Venture capitalists need to stop complaining about how "busy" and "stressful" their day is.
I mean, give me a break. Let's take a look at the typical day of a VC, shall we?
First, they wake up and listen to the All-In podcast. Ooh, how exhausting! Listening to a bunch
@ericbahn
Not sure if this is a serious question or a troll But I’m truly grateful to have the opportunity to be a citizen of this great country. Americas has given me so much and I’ve tried to blend in and be the best I could be
I periodically remind myself when I am perusing Twitter of the Mark Twain quote -
"It’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than open it and remove all doubt"
I live in a filter bubble. I know that. I just spoke to someone in Texas and in Arizona today. I was surprised by the enthusiasm they had for Trump and the conviction they had that he would win the election. This race is way closer than anyone thinks. the polls are not accurate.
I am super grateful to live in America. My life would not be possible in any other country. Freedom is not free. Really grateful for all the Americans who served in the Armed Forces, and made many sacrifices, including the ultimate one. Thank you so much.

Asking for my fellow VCs, is this the point in which we transition into experts on supreme court judgments? I was just getting a handle on submersible deep-sea exploration but now I have to learn a new topic.
3. There's no shame in failing after trying hard. It's better to have loved and lost than not to have loved at all. It's not the critic that counts but rather the person in the arena
1/ when I was 8 or 9 we went on a family trip to a religious place called Thirupathi. It's high elevation and we got there close to midnight. It was very cold and we were hungry. All the shops were closed and there was a mixup with our accommodations, and we did not have a
2/ in the early 90s when I got a chance to come to America, India had very strict foreign exchange regulations that prevented you from taking currency out. You could not legally bring dollars out. My parents had lived in Malaysia and Singapore for a few years and managed to
2/ there is a very thin line between success and failure and it's easy to cross over from one to the other. Some of the biggest successes come from the learnings of failures -
a. Think iPhone - Newton
b. DoorDash - Kozmo
c. Google -
End of an era. A true legend is transitioning. will never forget how
@moritzKBE
welcomed me to the
@Plaxo
board as a 27 year old clueless principal. will always be in debt for everything i learned from him.
I am going to go out on a limb and predict that the pandemic is over in the US in 60 days. Life will be back to some semblance of normality by May. The media is so afraid of a positive narrative that they are focused on every possible negative but the data is clear
Optimism, reconfirming what i've been saying for weeks.. 200M doses from Pfizer/Moderna 30M from J&J by end of March, and Astrazeneca can deliver 25M in April. We will all be celebrating easter with family.
1/3 I’m pleased to share that
@RedHat
closed its acquisition of
@StackRox
today, four short months after
@MenloVentures
’ lead investment in the company’s Series C. Congratulations
@kdshah
,
@a_golshan
and the rest of the team on this incredible milestone!
Whatever happens on nov 3rd. . I’m proud to be an American. As an immigrant who was given the opportunity of a lifetime to make his home here, I truly believe that regardless of the faults we have and we DO have MANY, We are the best country in the world for an immigrant
1/. I'm truly grateful to the amazing physicians and nurses at Stanford especially the one I live with for saving my life that day. I'm particularly grateful for the physical therapists who continue to work with me even now for all the recovery I have made.
As a cricket fan, this interview really moved me. Three improbable stories who have had an impact in this test match -
#INDvsAUS
Seeing all the talent in Rural India that perhaps has been ignored but now blossoming makes me smile
I think Nate silver and 538 should stop and quit right now because there’s no credibility left in polls anymore. I love those polls that showed 90% Biden winning. How the fuck can you get this wrong twice in a row
4. If you're someone who is undergoing stroke recovery, please DM me and I'll share with you the techniques and resources I found helpful. There are lots of options available and recovery can continue for a long time
I know it's very fashionable to characterize America as a fallen nation whose best days are behind it. However in the last 60 days, The American public have voted a Jamaican -Indian American to the vice presidency and a Jewish and black person to the Georgia Senate seat.
In the pursuit of 'wokeness,' we have created a generation of individuals who are quick to take offense, yet slow to take responsibility. They demand safe spaces from ideas that challenge their worldview, while simultaneously seeking to silence those who dare to think
Only in America does the daughter of an immigrant From India and an immigrant from Jamaica Have the opportunity to become the Vice President of the country. As imperfect as we are, America Remains a shiny city on top of the hill. This story is not possible in Europe or Asia
Keepin’ it real.

It’s very reassuring to me that all Indian parents are the same. It does not matter if you are a test cricketer or just a regular guy your parents are never happy. Exactly the kind of thing that my dad would say
One of the things I've learned is that money and power don't change people, They just help in revealing ones true self. Money and power do not make you an asshole but rather just reveal your inherent assholeness
why I love college football. Watching Marshall beat Notre Dame when one of their key players was driving an Uber year ago. You can be a storied powerhouse like Notre Dame with all the pomp and resources, but heart, grit and persistence can still beat you
#NotreDameFootball
Awesome to see how many people did so well in 2020 in
#fintwit
. Congratulations on your investment performance!!!
Would love to see your contributions to charity also in 2020. Surely given your amazing performance, You also helped your fellow human beings who were not so lucky
1/2 I’m seeing a lot of interesting takes on the funding of Adam Neumann’s start up by
@a16z
and
@pmarca
. As far as I can tell none of the people commenting have actually listened to the pitch Or seen the deck. Just to be clear neither have I.
It's a beautiful day in my neck of the woods and I hear the sound of teenagers playing in the pool with Music in the background. Feels like a good time to share some reflections. A short thread -
I did not have billionaire cage match in my 2023 bingo card but I like it. Trial by combat is the best form of adjudication. Changing our partner voting methodology
@MenloVentures
starting next Monday
2/ first and foremost I want to really thank and applaud the incredible founders and management teams of
@MenloVentures
who worked tirelessly, and with such professionalism to focus on the most important issues, which is making payroll for all companies.
I guess this is the point in the cycle where as a VC I transition from monetary theory/Covid lockdown expert to Russian coup strategies. Stay tuned for my 15 point thread on the current situation in Russia :-)
2. I'm also grateful for my other family
@MenloVentures
who have helped me in so many ways and whose love and support I feel every day. the support of my immediate family and my Menlo family have been instrumental in my recovery
Over the next one week we will get a ton of data that will lead people into debating whether we are in recession or not. Recession is a technical term defined by economists. The reality is that everybody is Acting like we are in a recession. And that’s all that matters
This feels like one of the saddest days of my life. I owe everything to this country And Having its institutions trampled upon by rioters is just not acceptable. Finding it really hard to process this. You are not a patriot if you don't believe in the Constitution
Meet Rama Sekhar, aka

One of my mentors once told me, predicting rain does not count – one building arks does.
As we go into this tech downturn we will find out who has built an ark and who has spent their time pontificating.
They said Australia cannot be beaten at the GAbba. It’s the fortress of Australia. They said no one has chased over 170 in the last inning’s in over 40 years. Clearly they forgot to tell the Indian team what a victory

Nothing is impossible as long as you believe
1/ I have met more interesting people in my home in the last three days then all of last year in the Bay Area - Turns out that my wife and daughters are pretty interesting people.
Honestly folks this is childish. If you don't like the Bay Area great, go to someplace you like.
Just finished reading
@MenloVentures
’ new “State of Generative AI in the Enterprise” report. The most shocking part? Enterprise spend on Gen AI is shockingly small! Given how much hype there is, I thought the numbers would be bigger.
Honest question but why is there so much pork in a covid bill? Can we make a new law that we should have the name of the lobbyist or the congressman who proposed the pork. One way to bring accountability is to have people own up when they propose pork
Based on their after hours market cap, Snapchat is now worth about $50B. For a company that Facebook was supposed to have crushed, they seem to be doing ok. Markets are often far bigger than we realize initially.
We have had a dramatic change in the cost of capital in the last few weeks driven both by geopolitical events and the rise of inflation. The tide is going out and we are going to find who in the startup world is wearing shorts or swimming naked. This is how capitalism works!
