Today on #Eritrea ’s independence day, I want to share a speech I recently gave at the United Nations. The only way we can meaningfully honour our freedom fighters is by continuing their fight. I hope this speech can shine light on why that is.

I don’t understand how people can minimise the pain many of us feel when we see how different Ukrainian refugees are being treated from other refugees. It’s painful to constantly be reminded that this treatment could’ve been possible for our loved ones if only they were white.

Tigray has never had this little humanitarian supplies. People are unnecessarily starving, dying, suffering. I have never felt as helpless as I do following & working on the conflict in Ethiopia. But the only thing we can do is to keep doing what we can until this nightmare ends.

To All Eritreans: For 17 years, our government has used the war with Ethiopia as an excuse for their oppressive rule. Now that war is over, we need to hold them to account. Put pressure, be loud, don't give up - the future of Eritrea is determined by how we act now.

I’m generally angry about many unnecessarily horrible things in the world but few things anger me as much as the human-made humanitarian crisis in #Tigray and the world’s (especially the African Union’s), response to it. People are literally dying. Do their lives not matter?

I don’t understand why many in the Eritrean opposition only have been ridiculing brigade nehamedu (when we know the reasons behind their tactics, lack of strategy and problematic statements) instead of exploring how we can help the first mass-movement of young Eritrean survivors.

To those saying we are politicising the situation in #Tigray ⬇️ #AllowAccessToTigray is about the Ethiopian government violating international law. It’s about human lives at risk, Ethiopians and Eritrean refugees alike. It’s about all the children. It’s really not controversial.

Today I’m thinking about Yohanna, a 22 y/o who gave birth whilst drowning exactly 9 years ago. She and everyone else in #Lampedusa didn’t just die, they were murdered. The lack of outrage against EU’s deadly migration policy is one of the gravest moral failures of our times.

Why is the Ethiopian government refusing to allow full humanitarian access to Tigray when they are obliged to do so under international law? Pressure @AbiyAhmedAli to #AllowAccessToTigray on

No more whitewashing: Aid is still NOT reaching civilians in desperate need in Ethiopia’s Tigray. Hunger and malnutrition reach them faster. In 40 years a humanitarian, I’ve rarely seen an aid response so impeded. We are failing as an int’l community.

Despite the comms blackout and restricted access to #Tigray and other areas in Northern #Ethiopia , there have been plenty of credible evidence produced about the unfolding disaster and shared widely. All leaders and institutions are fully informed. Anyone's inaction is a choice.

UNHCR has literally lost access to the only two remaining refugee camps in Tigray. They are being attacked and are running out of food, clean water. And the ones who managed to flee are speaking up for the ones left behind. But it shouldn’t be on them to do it, it should be on us

I just can't imagine the pain of losing someone as young as Ciham w/o a valid reason. She didn't get sick or get into an accident - she was forcibly disappeared by a government. Today, I'm thinking about her family, her friends and everyone who misses her deeply. #FreeCiham

Wooooow two days later #AllowAccessToTigray is still trending. We won’t stop until the Ethiopian government allows FULL humanitarian access into Tigray. Take action here and put even more pressure on @AbiyAhmedAli to act:

I will never get over how the Ethiopian government has been restricting humanitarian access to #Tigray since the very first second the conflict started, how confidently they have been denying it and how little that has been done to pressure them to stop this illegal practice.

NO humanitarian supplies (including food, medicine or fuel) have been allowed into #Tigray in 24 days (!!!!!!) because the Ethiopian government is blocking trucks from entering the region. Blocking humanitarian access is a crime. People are dying. Why is there not more outrage?

This can’t be the low, low, low standard we hold a government too. A vast majority of the needed aid is still being blocked after more than a month without any aid allowed in. #AllowAccessToTigray

#Ethiopia 🇪🇹 "Good news: 157 trucks arrived in #Mekele . A new convoy is moving, so the humanitarian aid is effectively restarted, probably not as much as we would like. But that is a good signal; UN flights between Mekele and Addis have been re-established," -- @antonioguterres

It’s been more than a year since this I tweeted so why is this caption still relevant? Why is #Tigray still being starved? Why is the African Union still not doing more? What will it take for @AbiyAhmedAli and the federal government to end this?

We need to continuously challenge the Ethiopian government when they claim that adequate humanitarian access has been allowed to #Tigray . The current restrictions violates their obligations under international law and has put millions of lives at risk. #AllowAccessToTigray

9 years ago today, Ciham was abducted by Eritrean authorities. She hasn’t been heard from since. The fight for a better #Eritrea isn’t complicated - we just want a country where ppl, incl. 15 year old girls, don’t simply vanish. That’s the least we deserve. #FreeCiham #YIAKL

This interview made me furious and I could say a lot, but for now I’m going to keep it short: There was never any peace, there was just a ‘friendship’ forged between Abiy and Isaias against a common enemy. And anyone with genuine interest for the people in the region knew that.

I demand the immediate release of Ciham Ali, a US-Eritrean national who was detained in #Eritrea in 2012 - when she was only 15 years old. She has not been seen since. I call on @SecBlinken to urgently intervene in Ciham's case. #FreeCiham

I don’t usually respond to harassment but I will say one thing: Anyone whose mind isn’t clouded by love for Isaias Afewerki knows that I’m on the right side of history. My love for the Eritrean people is too strong for anything you say or do to stop me.

My heart is so full from all the love I have received about this so far. I do this work because it is my duty as a privileged diaspora born. I speak up bcs so many Eritreans are silenced in our country and in neighbouring countries, or exhausted from the trauma after they flee.

In 2001, a week after 9/11, the Eritrea was turned into a dictatorship. No one paid attention. In 2020, on the US’ most watched election night, the Ethiopian and Eritrean leaders are about to start an unnecessary war against a common enemy. This time, we need to do better.

Why would anyone want to ‘build a bridge’ with ppl who support human rights crimes? Where exactly is that bridge gonna take us? Let’s focus our energy on informing more ppl who are silent because of lack of info rather than trying to convince ppl to stop supporting a dictatorship
