A statement from the UCC Students’ Union Executive 2024/25 regarding the resignation of Hayley O’Connell.
Hayley has done tremendous work for the Union throughout their time in office and we wish them the very best in the future.
UCC Students’ Union have announced they plan to remain camped on the Quad, day and night, until UCC reverse their 3% increase on Campus Accommodation.
UCC, we will freeze until you freeze these extortionate rent increases.
#OccupyTheQuad
UCCSU wishes to express our outrage with the rebranding of Chambers to ‘Sinners’ for Freshers’ Week 2023. We have seen the public outrage online and heard from students who are quite upset and shocked at this decision. ✊🏽

As we enter Day 5 out on the Quad, we want to thank everyone for all the amazing support. We will not be moved until our demands are met by
@UCC
.
Following our meeting with UCC Campus Accommodation, an agreement has been reached to issue a rent refund to any student that chooses to return home.
Given the lack of on-campus lectures and general uncertainty, we‘re pleased to see this decision go through.
Take Care,
UCC SU

Image-Based Sexual Abuse affects 1 in 8 people who use social media. 90% of victims are women.
We need legislation, but not only that, we need a huge culture shift. The onus should not be on women to protect each other and themselves from this form of abuse.

Very encouraging to see no cases of house parties brought forward to Campus Watch today.
The overwhelming majority have responded to public health messaging this week and avoided large gatherings.
Now let’s keep it going;
Keep it Small, Keep it Safe, Keep your Distance.
We are overwhelmed by all the generosity and support our food bank has received over the last 24 hours. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated, shared, or spread the word 💕

Solidarity with Dr Corcoran & all staff affected by precarious contracts. In UCC we have some staff on 6 figure salaries while many of our lecturers & researchers are left like this? Beggars belief. Precarity hurts not only staff & their families, but also us as their students ✊
I had some bad news about my contract earlier this week, and I have not been able to concentrate on anything since. I don’t want to be venting about personal stuff on Twitter, but my heart is just breaking. I love my job and my students so much. Precarity is so harmful.
DAY THREE OF
#OccupyTheQuad
With over 50+ students having camped out over the last two nights, the UCC student body continue to stand strong against the rent increases.
Winds are high but hopes are higher.
Call down to chat to the UCCSU to find out how to get involved.

UCCSU are disheartened to announce that we are reopening our Students’ Union Food Bank this Wednesday in the Common Room from 5-7 due to increased cost of living, and cost of being in higher education as well as many other issues that strain students financially.
Thanks to
@MichealMartinTD
for calling down to chat today to
@UCCSU
on Day Four of the
#OccupyTheQuad
protest. A productive conversation where Mr. Martin expressed his opinion that the 3% increase to UCC Campus Accommodation was not necessary given recent increases.

UPDATE FROM BEN DUNLEA ON
#OCCUPYTHEQUAD
#DAY8
Students’ Union agree to bring in an independent external mediator to begin conversation with UCC Campus Accommodation but will remain in full occupation of the Quad through the conversations until demands are met.
We’re happy to inform everyone there were significantly less disciplinary cases presented at Campus Watch Committee today than there were yesterday.
As our virtual events started last night not Sunday, this shows that online events do not in-fact encourage antisocial behaviour.
1) Throughout the pandemic, students have had to care for loved ones, fight the virus, deal with additional financial pressures, work in part-time jobs where contact with the virus becomes increasingly likely, all the while our student nurses and healthcare workers are working

UCCSU is horrified by the deaths in recent days, months and years in America at the hands of police brutality and racism. We took a moment to take in the news, the outrage and the voices of POC who have lived and are living through the trauma of racism both in Ireland and the US.
Pharmacy students are being exploited all over the country and the student movement is calling a halt to it. Fees are increasing from €3k - €7.5k and placement is going from paid to unpaid. Sign the petition to show your support.

Student renters have been exploited and mistreated by accommodation providers for far too long.
Today, the Residential Tenancies Act 2021 will be tabled, which would ensure protections for students renters for the remainder of the COVID-19 pandemic
