In the late 1800's animal fat was the primary fat source for Americans while industrial seed oils were used for anything other than eating. This changed when Proctor & Gamble, a soap and candle manufacturer, came across an industrial waste product that piqued their interest.

Through a chemical process that Proctor & Gamble patented, cottonseed oil could be turned into an "edible" replacement for popular cooking fats at the time, namely lard. They named it "Crisco"and poured advertising dollars into the campaign that, up to that point were unseen.
