This is my good friend Conor, who proudly dressed up as Belle. Today his mom posted this: “This is Mr Sinclair. They were having gender discussions in class and some of kids were saying that boys cant wear dresses so today he dressed up as Wonder Woman.”

My little friend was in tears & wanted to quit school. SHE’S 8! So we ditched her assignment & did a reflection on her strengths and stretches. A page of writing! This is her “I did it” face. This is what joy in learning looks like. If kids are in tears we are doing it wrong.
2 years with this one...who I will love for this lifetime and all others. I will remember the love from those who witnessed us. I will remember those before me & those who continue to fight & advocate for the rights of me and my family.

Yesterday was a day of reflection and a day of appreciation for my incredible wife. 3 years, 1 house, 1 truck, 1 Ruthie dog, and one perfect Mette. Love my little family so much. I am so grateful for this life ❤️
I know many of us are doing some very important & reflective work on anti-racism...but can we also just make the very important connection that you cannot be anti-racist and also believe that segregating students by ability and disability is okay

Jessica and I headed north for Thanksgiving to spend time with good friends. We are thankful for relaxing, good books, warm hearts and full bellies 😉

Ok folks, as we continue to enter in this whole new world of distance learning, I am here to remind you to take it easy! I mean we are in the middle of a PANDEMIC, if there was ever a time to not "should" on ourselves or our students, this is it!
Today's reminder is, There is NO such thing as cheating in continuous learning! The goal during this time of crisis is engagement, not accountability. That goes for students, families and our teachers working overtime. Give the people the SUPPORTS!
Joey-I grew up seeing you. You were the first self advocate I ever met. You lived with purpose & honoured your strengths. Your passion & visibility changed how we all viewed disability. Your character will guide many for generations & I feel honoured to have witnessed your impact
When I push against segregated practices, Im often greeted with the question “what does the research say?” But why doesnt the question go the OTHER way?! Show me the research on segregation! It should not be the oppressed who have to justify their existence
#inclusionISjustified
Ok school district friends, our EAs need to be working with their kids and their classes right now. Doing check ins. Supporting families. They are important connectors and translators - respect them and the students they work with - this is not the time to reassign them ❤️
#bced
A provocation. This is a graph of my followers on Instagram this week. Green = follow Red = unfollow. Thursday I talked about reconciliation. Wednesday I talked about anti racism. The irony that my Instagram is about inclusion doesn’t escape me.

School program aims to boost inclusion for students with special needs
Such a great chat with Jesse Thistle this morning ❤️ We asked what teachers could do to support kids like him. He said, “be trauma informed... I wasn’t fighting to be a trouble maker. I was fighting because I was dealing with trauma. That...and feed kids!”

is the easiest or the hardest barrier to

. The hardest because you can’t force someone to believe in ability. The easiest because believing in ability costs nothing. It requires zero resources. The ? is, what side of history do you want to be on?
Mette wears orange, as our family stands in solidarity with Indigenous children and families. Today and every day… but especially today.
I will teach my child what I did not learn.
I will learn from my child what I was not taught.
Take a look at this team, I am so proud of them b/c they just took the leap! They are on day 3 of including students with intellectual disabilities into their HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIC classes. They said enough. It is time for segregation to end. It’s time to presume competence.
5 Moore Minutes is taking a bit of a turn for the rest of the year! We have teamed up with

A student gave me a painting today. It is her version of the next evolution of inclusion. This is what she said, the next step is “united” when we work together, we all become a part of each other”

My family made gingerbread houses tonight. Did I build one? No. No I did not. Did I build a life size replica gingerbread PhD dissertation instead? Why yes. Yes I did.

If you are supporting students with disabilities as we head into this uncharted territory of continuous leaning, this is my favourite resource so far. Accessible, differentiated, age appropriate & interactive.

To my teacher colleagues, do you have students with disabilities in your class? If you don’t, will you be the one to advocate? Parents, is your kid in a class with a student with a disability? If they aren’t, will you demand diversity? Don’t miss out!

In a meeting with
@NicoleKaler1
- she summarizes my frustration in six words, "more funding does not address prejudice." This. 100% This. There isn't enough funding in the world to help people believe that student's with disabilities deserve access to an inclusive education.
We (me & Kate) created another distance IEP plan today. This is for a student w/ Autism in Gr. 8 and includes Curricular Replacement Goal for the Sci 8 class that he is in. Includes directions for family & student friendly version to use for choice making
If one student is not having success, it means an entire community has a need! Today we are building classroom support plans that responds to needs, not individual students because when a flower doesn’t bloom, we support the soil.

Living in NY taught me so much about privilege & the importance of acknowledging how the colour of my skin has benefited me. Its my job to educate myself about equity & work harder to bring justice to those who have less privilege than myself. I invite you to join me. Start today
Never thought I could be an author. Never thought I could be an author on Audible. Isn’t it amazing when we surpass our own dreams ❤️

Curriculum for students without disabilities is not written as a SMART goal - so why the heck do our IEPs? Welcome to the new era of QUALITATIVE IEP goals! IEP evidence log uploaded on the blog today!

Our kids ARE the curriculum. They need to see themselves in what they are learning. I want kids to see themselves and feel safe to say, "Hey! That's like me!" This is teaching to identity. This is inclusion.

15 years ago today was my first day of school as a teacher. After working in NY today, I took a detour and drove past PS63. Im so grateful for the time I spent here, the people I met, the kids I taught, & the lessons that prepared me for the rest of my career. Thank you

“Inclusion isn’t forcing children with diverse needs to conform to the accepted norm. Until we shift that mindset, we will continue to send the message to children that they just aren’t worthy; they just don’t make the cut.
And that’s a problem we all own.”
Ok my friends, I have been receiving a lot of questions and emails about how to support students who have IEPs at home, and since I have had a bunch of cancelled events, I thought, "Hey! I'll just make my own!" so here is my first webinar!

Five different presentations today, what did they all have in common? How we all need to reflect on the ableist structure that continue to assume that students with disabilities cannot _____ (fill in the blank) Disrupt the narrative my friends!
Enough. All students can learn. All students deserve access to curriculum. This is not a resources issue. This is a choice. This is a decision to not give access. I can’t believe we are still having this conversation.
Our son’s high school meeting was yesterday. Inclusion doesn’t really exist in high school for students with disabilities. There are no choices + many limitations. I was told he will get to help with recycling. The
