Proud to stand together with my colleagues at

Because the union makes us strong.
Today, we — the hosts, reporters, producers, digital content creators and others — of WLRN are proud to announce our intent to unionize with

Just came to my attention that a Muslim woman arrested in a Miami protest last week had her hijab removed & was forced to take a mugshot without it. That was later broadcast and posted online.
I'm taking off my reporter hat here: this is an inexcusable violation of her rights.
Ace Hardware has an unconventional business model in the US. The stores are independently owned purchasing cooperatives.. so the stores are all owned locally, but they buy in bulk together.
Unlike Home Depot, its profits stay in the neighborhood, not extracted by shareholders.
All that sand is imported.. The shoreline was already totally washed away in the 1970s. The feds (under Carter) had to step in and spend millions on "beach renourishment" to protect the condos and resorts.
Miami Beach is a sandbar.
BREAKING: Florida AG just sent this letter to the FBI and Florida Department of Law Enforcement asking them to look into "potential violations of election law."
Bloomberg's effort to pay off fines and fees of people w/ felony convictions is the target.
Her brother is circulating this petition asking for accountability from the
@MiamiPD
. The mere existence of her mugshot without a hijab is evidence of a human rights violation, according to federal and state laws.
This is very bad. Don't do this. Not at the airport for the TSA, not anywhere. This is a fundamental human right: the right to exercise religion. This even applies when you are in police custody.
What people who don't live in Florida do not understand is that it is not about the beaches eroding. It is about gravity-based drainage systems not functioning because the tides are higher. Water comes *in* now. Your city starts drowning from the inside, not the coastline.
It's flown under the radar, but a thing happened on Tuesday:
Black candidates won every countywide race in Florida's second most populous county, Broward County. That's sheriff, state attorney, public defender, clerk of courts, and supervisor of elections.
I would also like to go on the record as saying the Washington Post article that is cited was incredibly sloppy reporting. It suggests the effort will only help Black and Latino would-be voters.
FRRC's fund is not denying white applicants.
Day three of Fort Lauderdale floods. Residents of Edgewood tell me no services have been here at all. "You're the first one to ask us if we need anything," resident Steve Allen told me.

To clarify: This was sent from a candidate for Supervisor of Elections in Orange County to the state attorney's office. The state attorney hasn't said she's charging, but this is clearly an illegal thing to do.
Wall Street investors bought a total of 40 percent of single family home purchases in the Atlanta area the third quarter of 2021, we just heard in this Senate hearing. And they made up 70 percent of evictions.
Truly an astonishing number. And it's only accelerating + spreading.
Everyone I interviewed tonight (granted I was at a Democratic watch party) said they feel a shift under way in FL.
GOP swore they were going to turn Miami-Dade "red" this year. DeSantis won it in 2022.
The Dem county mayor just won reelection primary outright with 59% of votes.
FWIW, it's a really, really bad night for
@RonDeSantis
in Southwest Florida: his candidate lost a Sarasota School Board race, his three appointments in Manatee all lost, too.

Also, if paying fines + fees to become eligible = paying someone to vote, Florida literally has a poll tax.
If this becomes the state's actual position, that's a backhanded admission of what some advocates have been saying this whole time.
Also, small towns and block by block, small sales matter. Ace is usually found on local streets. Home Depot and Lowes on major thoroughfares. If only Walmart had an equivalent business model competitor, the entire grocery landscape would be different in the US.
My friend (pretty much cousin) is a flight attendant. She took this photo this morning around 8am, above NYC. The only thing visible is One World Trade Center.

It's wild how state legislatures pass things with simple majorities all the time but if the federal government did the same it would fundamentally break our political system.
Question for places that have vaccine passports for restaurants, movie theaters, etc..
What's even the point when all these vaccinated people have omicron? Not snarky, but a real question.
- From Florida
The responses to this post are overwhelmingly missing the point. The quoted post is dumb. The shore line is the same because it costs tens of millions of dollars to maintain it. But the shore line was moving naturally anyways. It neither proves nor disproves anything at all.
Tomorrow, the City of Miami will vote on whether to grant a 30-year contract on light poles that will have cameras, license plate readers and flood sensors. For free.
The catch: Nothing would stop the contracting company from keeping all your data and selling it to others.
Sandra Bland died in a jail cell 4 years ago, and only now we learn that she was recording the stop that led to her illegal arrest. Unconscionable that it took this long for her side of the encounter to be revealed.

saying it is "inexcusable" is the part that breaks with general reporting practice. i'm Muslim, btw, and you're apparently not as clever as you think
IT GETS WORSE: Muslim madrassa operated by Imam Dentist advocating violence against Jews gets $500K FL tax $$ to "educate" children. Rep. Randy Fine calls on Florida Department of Education to cut taxpayer funds immediately.

New: The Florida Bar confirms to me that it's opened an investigation into
@mattgaetz
' tweet yesterday. He's a Bar-certified attorney in Florida. Many say the tweet was witness tampering.
Trump just retweeted this.
There's a difference between paying to help someone become eligible to vote and paying someone to vote. I heard from a circuit judge this AM who agrees that's a major distinction.
It's important to know that this is becoming a constitutional crisis in Florida.
Local school districts are empowered by the state constitution to make local decisions about education. This top-down approach is testing the document.
The office of Gov. Ron DeSantis announces that the Florida Board of Education can withhold the salaries of superintendents and school board members who defy the governor’s executive order prohibiting mask mandates.
DeSantis asked about Cuban protesters right now in Miami who have shut down the 826, per a question asked. Gov signed law making that criminal.
He did not answer the question but deflected to protests on the island.
Trump just retweeted this.

Florida effectively banned civilian oversight panels earlier this year, so whatever happens in response to this incident will likely happen behind closed doors
Mr. President will you urge your supporters not to throw fuel onto the fire?
Trump: I am urging every gasoline truck in the nation to be commandeered to supply my supporters with the necessary gasoline.
It's official:
@RonDeSantisFL
just signed SB 7066, making it so people have to pay all fines and fees on felony convictions before regaining the right to vote, post Amendment 4. Goes into effect on Monday.
Kentucky's Senate passed a law making it a crime to taunt or "insult" police, punished by up to 90 days in jail.
GOP sponsors filed it after Louisville protests over the police killing of
#BreonnaTaylor
. It still needs a House vote.
@ACLU
calls it an assault on free speech.
Inbox: There's a planned protest tomorrow night in Hialeah. Longtime tenants of an apartment building are facing a 65% rent increase. From $1,000 a month to $1,650 a month.
Per property records, this building was last sold in 1990. It is likely already owned outright.
But really though where is Governor DeSantis in all this?
And even now with the biggest surge in COVID cases Florida has ever seen, the state website is only providing weekly updates. Not daily.
Reminder as we stare down

that AccuWeather and the Weather Channel successfully lobbied the Trump admin to ban the federal government (

Yet BOTH those companies rely on federal data.

In case this helps anyone.. The beaches are irrelevant. We will spend billions of federal taxpayer money from Wisconsin and Idaho taxpayers (the joke is on all of us!) to protect those wealthy beachside property owners. The real story is inland.
What people who don't live in Florida do not understand is that it is not about the beaches eroding. It is about gravity-based drainage systems not functioning because the tides are higher. Water comes *in* now. Your city starts drowning from the inside, not the coastline.
Hundreds of millions in federal dollars for rural water treatment and energy upgrades will now go to other states, not Florida.
It's like when Rick Scott blocked $2 billion for high speed rail in 2011.
Connecticut ended up w/ the fed money.
Connecticut now has high speed rail.
Five million dollar DeSantis veto triggers cancellation of $346 million in federal funding. The vetoes forced Florida’s withdrawal from a program that would have provided money to Florida consumers for rebates on energy efficient household appliances.
BREAKING: US Supreme Court sides with Florida and blocks hundreds of thousands of people with felony convictions from participating in upcoming elections.
Sotomayor, Ginsburg and Kagan dissent.
Miami is just a petri dish of COVID variants.
University of Miami data from 2nd week of July shows 62% patients have Delta variant, 20% had Gamma (Brazilian), 9% B.1.621variant (Colombia) and 3% Lambda (Peru).
A month ago there was only 2 total identified patients w/ Delta.
NEW from me: For the last decade the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office has been pushing defendants to donate money to “charities” it created and for which it makes decisions.
Some news from today's South Florida Roundup:
After
@MDCPS
declared it will not let students see the Pulitzer Prize winning play "Anna In The Tropics," Miami New Drama's art director Michel Hausmann declared he will make tickets free for all public school students.
Just finally panned out of Florida to look at results coming in from other states and wow, Florida is absolutely its own political universe at this point
Val Demings was the strongest at the very end. She went after Rubio for talking about confronting China's stranglehold on US manufacturing, then voting against CHIPS Act. Then about voting against capping drug costs for Medicare..
Most of the rest was "that's not true", etc..
The planned FPL rate hike is now in effect and staring at my power bill like 👀, and I know I'm not the only one.
Largest electric bill I've ever gotten, by like a 40 percent margin.
Florida's top GOP state senator on health policy Manny Diaz says he wants to review ALL vaccine mandates in the state.
Including longstanding vaccine mandates for mumps, measles and other ones children have LONG had to take to attend classes.
Florida bill that would allow any business to veto and block local ordinances from going into effect if it impacts their profits just passed its first committee.
Now, Senators are discussing bill that would limit liability of construction companies for construction defects.
My personal/professional rule moving forward is that whenever a Cuban-American politician advocates for bombing or militarily invading Cuba I will ask them straight up if they have family still on the island. Just so we can lay it on the table.
Was just assaulted for doing my job at an anti-mask mandate protest

I talked w/

The panic IS the problem.

Subprime lending and investing more public money into the creation of public housing are nowhere near the same thing. Seriously, they are just completely separate and distinct things. Trailer homes thing is a whole nother topic, but it doesn't touch anything near 2008.
There are so many fantastic journalists
@SunSentinel
who got laid off today whose work directly impacts the community. Hedge funds are killing local journalism one "restructure" at a time.
Honestly don't know what to call this other than suppression.
The Florida Rights Restoration Coalition says it's had almost 500 people w/ felony convictions apply to its fines and fees fund "simply because they cannot identify their LFOs or navigate state systems themselves."
Welcome to a 55+ housing community in Pembroke Pines..
“So now we are over $700 a month that we are paying just in HOA fees, and they’re going to kick it up to $1,000 a month ... We have no choice we have to sell."
I'm old enough to remember the entire MLB going on strike for almost an entire year so players could protest a salary cap on multimillion dollar contracts.
This strike is about something bigger than the players themselves, which is good for a change.
In response to the 1619 project, happy to see the

U.S. Marshalls just dropped papers at the Coconut Grove home of Miami commissioner Joe Carollo.
It is essentially a seizure of his home, connected to the $63.5 million judgement against him for violating residents' first amendment rights.
BREAKING: Florida extends voter registration deadline until 7pm tonight. There were widespread issues with the online voter registration website yesterday.
From Department of State office:
NEWS: United Teachers of Dade, the teacher's union for Miami-Dade (one of Florida's largest unions) is likely to be decertified.
As of last week, only 58.4% of members were paying dues. A law passed earlier this year set threshold at 60%. Must send numbers to state tomorrow.
Protesters have taken over NW 7th Avenue at Little River Dr in Miami. Calling on Biden Admin to end to deportations and better treatment of Haitian asylum seekers.
I really try not to share much about the 30 emails a day I get from Trump (most is conspiracies and just asking for money) but holy crap here he is reaching back to the most rancorous stereotype aimed at the Haitian people from 30+ years ago
Hard to believe the Senate actually passed a bipartisan infrastructure bill, after years of blah blah blah.
Here's a list of specific Florida projects included in the bill:
(Both Florida GOP Senators Scott and Rubio voted against it)
DeSantis' attorneys: Ballot amendments passed directly by voters are not as valid as laws passed by the legislature:
"His legal team went so far as to argue that amendments ratified by the citizens deserve less legal protections than statutes enacted by the Legislature."
Last week, Gov.
@RonDeSantis
made a stark admission: his congressional map diminished Black voting power. Now the governor's lawyers are setting their sights on getting a court to strike down voter-approved protections that mirror the Voting Rights Act.
Gimenez and Salazar are both ahead in Miami-Dade County, for FL-26 and FL-27. Again, no Election Day results yet.
Gimenez also ahead in Monroe County, which also contains the district.
Federal judge Mark Walker has temporarily blocked key portions of Florida's "Stop WOKE Act". Specifically the parts that prevent employers from requiring employees partake in some kinds of "woke" trainings.
The first graph is a doozy.
Just had to block the spokesperson for my governor. She had been trolling me for most of the last hour after I basically asked her to tweet responsibly.
If you know me and my radio work I'm very very fair with Gov. DeSantis. And I will continue to be. But this was too much.
A judge actually wrote "It's the First Amendment, stupid" while ruling against Florida threatening TV stations that air ads the governor's office disagrees with.
Lawyer behind the effort has already resigned, saying they had to draw the line somewhere.
"To keep it simple for the State of Florida: it’s the First Amendment, stupid."
That's what a federal judge wrote today as he sided with local TV stations in an extraordinary dispute over a pro-abortion rights TV ad.
It's still funny to me that Alaska has only counted like 53% of its ballots but no one is talking about "you don't count ballots after an election is over" and accusing them of fraud.
Trump is hitting DeSantis on issues that actually affect millions of Floridians. Even Republicans have been angry and alarmed at the home insurance crisis (wallet issues do not lie) but until now they haven't placed the blame on the governor.
👀
So uh .. the woman who created Florida's celebrates coronavirus dashboard has been removed from her post.
She says it was because of her commitment to transparency.
DeSantis spokesperson walking back misinformed theories she was spreading that issues at the Jacksonville airport had to do w/ a kind of revolt over fed vaccine mandates.
Firing off accusations that fit your narrative and then learning the facts later will break our politics.
UPDATE: as I said earlier - Cannot confirm this was ATCs “walkout.” The massive disruption in flights does seem to be a direct consequence of the mandate though: it’s Southwest employees calling out. It’s not “weather” or “normal staffing issues.”
Thank you to the socialists, anarchists and everyday people who fought to give us the 8-hour day, 40-hour work week, and yes, Labor Day.
Wild how yesterday's radical demands become today's standard.
