@zoesqwilliams @SoniaRGallego I think you have that backwards. Acknowledging evolution is not an attack on creationists. Acknowledging the evolution of binary sex and 250m years of mammalian evolution is not an attack on people who reject the fact human sex is binary.

However the counter claims have no support. They are assertions without evidence and seem to be based entirely on ill feeling towards the author. I don’t want to get in to that. This thread is to clarify the misconceptions about what constitutes a successful book.

The idea that books have to break the top 30,000 on amazon to be deemed successful (which would be top 0.1%) is inaccurate. Whilst there are 'poor' books out there in general authors, publishers and book shops need all the support they can get.

Firstly the average book sells about 3,000 copies in its lifetime. A few hundred in its first year. Any book selling a few hundred in first week or being in Amazon’s top 300,000 is well within in top 1% of books for that year.

These are not mutually contradictory points and claims 390 copies a week is ‘poor’ don’t really understand the industry. 400 copies a week for several months would equate to low 1000s of sales. This would be successful and in line with the alleged initial print run of 10,000.

@stephenwhittle It is a fact that mammalian sex is binary and it can be observed in over 1 billion years of evolution of binary sex All those working at human fertility clinics, zoo breeding programs and farms are ‘acting’ on that belief. Are you suggesting they are breaking some law?

@KatyMontgomerie @jk_rowling extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Terms have to be defined. Evidence has to support claims. Studies need replicating. Theories have to be consistent and cohesive and rooted in scientific method. I’m sorry but I only see one side achieving this standard

It is also possible to game the system temporarily and get a high rank on amazon if you get lots of sales in short time span. There are examples of this. However to reach number 2 overall and stay in top 1000 for 2-3 weeks can only be achieved by relatively high sales.

Now to this particular book. It reached number 2 across all books on the UK best sellers rank (it also reached number 2 in at least one sub-category).  I’ve since seen it drift out to 760, back into 200 odd and fluctuate over a couple of weeks.

A popular book might break in to the top 10,000 and hold there for first month before drifting out to say 100,000. A year later it might be 500,000. A few sales on the same day might push it back into top 100,000. An initial print run of 1000 if sold would make it a success

However this ‘390’ figure is not backed up by the publisher or the information on amazon. The counter to this is the publisher can not be trusted and amazon best seller rank can be manipulated or is inaccurate.

Roughly a million books are published each year. 4 million if self published books are included. Amazon has 32 million books listed. Celebrity biographies might sell tens of 1000s. A small number sell in hundreds of 1000s.

There are two competing claims. 1. The book is selling well and they’ve had to print more after initial run of 10,000 2. The book has sold ‘only’ 390 copies in its first week
