Writer-in-Residence at Manchester Cathedral / Northern Debut Award for Poetry / 'This Is Not an Epiphany' (2023) / 'boar' (2023) / Host at More Song in Bradford
Incredibly pleased to have won a Northern Writers Award for my debut collection Volatile!
The Middle English etymology of ‘volatile’ means ‘a creature that flies (birds)’ as such the title frames interrelations between ecological, economic, personal and political crises 🪶
beyond elated to announce that I am the newly appointed Writer-in-Residence at Manchester Cathedral, we will be delivering creative writing projects working with MMU and local charities & producing original work engaging with the history and archives of the cathedral
this guy is my favourite man on earth, every friday he posts a picture with a table full of post-punk records and a bottle of red wine in the nick cave and the fall fan pages on facebook
‘I find poetry — which estranges me from language, the most ordinary medium of my life — to be a useful practice for unsettling my perception so that I might see the forms of my living more precisely, the possibilities of an otherwise more vividly.’
Happy publication day to “boar”! My new pamphlet of poetry follows the tongueless, heraldic Bradford Boar to trace the social and political affinities between medieval and contemporary England. Thanks to
@brokensleep
for having faith in the project 🐗🌳
Had the pleasure of seeing Gboyega read a few times and hanging out after. Aside from being one of the coolest guys ever, the pulse and steel of his work astounds me. It’s clear how many people he touched, such a loss to poetry and the wider world
absolutely love my job as writer-in-residence at Manchester Cathedral, spent the day between here and Manchester Poetry Library, reading, writing, organising events, editing, and talking to people 🕯️
(extract from Soft Hail by Barry MacSweeney)
I had a review published in the Poetry Review Winter 2023 issue alongside poetry from Anne Carson, Seán Hewitt, Aracelis Girmay & other legends. Always feel like an imposter as a working class person in poetry so it does feel validating having criticism published by PR 💐
Very proud to announce my pamphlet This Is Not an Epiphany will be published June 1st. Thanks to
@Anthony1983
for choosing the manuscript and to
@seanehewitt
for the glistering blurb. We’re launching the book in Sheffield, Manchester & Oxford 🌿⛓️
2 pamphlets published this year; reviews in Poetry Review, Poetry London, Magma; poems in bath magg, The North, Carmen et Error; judged the Manchester Cathedral Poetry Competition & installed as writer-in-residence… time to rest now
Very chuffed that More Song has been awarded funding from Bradford City Council to pay our artists and readers for the next few months! It’s been an honour to bring such amazing poets to Bradford and we have some stellar line-ups confirmed for this year
See you on Jan 17th ⛓️⛓️
A real joy to host Zaffar Kunial, Will Harris and Joseph Minden at More Song
@TheRecordCafe
last night. This is why we do it, hearing poetry of this standard in Bradford. Thanks to all who came, that’s it for the reading series until 2024! ⛓️⛓️⛓️
I’m pleased to be reintroducing the annual Manchester Cathedral Poetry Competition this winter with an amazing panel of judges whose work I admire. Cash prize, free entry for a single poem, and submissions will open in October. We will announce the theme in the coming months 🏆

Big thanks to everyone who came last night! I’m glad that Bradford can host incredible poetry like this. Thank you to Charlotte, Joe, and Sarah for reading as well as all the open mic readers. Huge shout out to Keith for letting us use this space. See you in May! ⛓️⛓️⛓️
I used to get a bursary at MMU and spent a large chunk of it on books at
@BlackwellsMcr
so it was incredible to launch This Is Not an Epiphany there last night, especially with
@ElliottChlo
🌿⛓️
somehow getting into university with no A-Levels to study English Literature I would never have imagined being represented in
@McrPoetryLib
@MMULibrary
, if you told me this 3 years ago I wouldn’t believe it
CALL OUT: would anyone like to read at Bradford's finest innovative poetry night More Song on February 7th alongside 2 incredible Verve and Penned in the Margins poets?
Our final guest for More Song next week is a titan of the British poetry scene. Zaffar Kunial lives in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, and was born in Birmingham. His debut collection, Us, was shortlisted for a number of prizes.
taught a poem by the Palestinian poet Mosab Abu Toha in a workshop today & there was hardly a dry eye in the room, we took some moments of silence after reading, as a sign of respect for those in Gaza & as a reminder of poetry’s power 🇵🇸
Sam Plant and Jake Oliver are horrible people who have manipulated and hurt so many others, so proud of everyone for coming out and sharing their stories
Why do people think that saying ‘I’ll go elsewhere’ holds so much power. You think I give a shit? I’m on minimum wage and working through the coronavirus pandemic
