Design Legend Robert J. Kuntz | Rob was Gary Gygax's student, co-designer, Dungeon Master and co-DM
Good Morning! Nathalie and I are heading out soon. Just wanted to tell you about the feature documentary about D&D we've been shooting. I'll have more later. Spread the word. It's a humdinger!
We, TSR, gave these clowns now ruining D&D an easy, time-tested and engaging formula: Conan creeping through the crypts, saving worlds, defeating foul foes--Fantasy! Now it's Baking cookies, safe space Dragon buddies and Fun-TA-TA-See? Literary imbeciles.
I am the last living author of the original Greyhawk Campaign. These products are all part of that, the ORIGINALS. I will be producing many more. Do not accept imitations. These are the real deal by the real author and designer. BTW: Same for Griff with Blackmoor.
I present for you the SEXIST & NON-INCLUSIVE D&D Cartoon (still pict, 1983) from the "Racist" etc. TSR, Gary Gygax, President TSR Entertainment. Do repost. This too is being included in my scathing letter to Hasbro.
So. WotC wishes to condemn Gods DG & Heroes as cultural appropriation, smearing my own and James Ward's research? I present Magic the Gathering City of Brass card, culturally appropriated from the source in Burton's 1001 Arabian Nights. Start culture wars indeed.
@KevinLamb74
@Wizards_DnD
One might understand why folks like me and others were not invited for either the D&D Documentary OR to be interviewed for this book. I am the last designer standing from that time, two-time award winner, etc, etc, and it's like me and others (Blackmoor Bunch) are ghosts.
I hope people can see by now that this story is being memory-holed by omitting people such as myself (with what little I've showed you and explained and with what
@Blackmoor_Film
film has revealed from his side). I see it as a purposeful eradication of D&D's history.
Everyone has been so great here and I hate to bug out, but my writing calls. Here's a snap from the past, People Magazine 1980, of Gary and Mary Gygax. See you all later and keep fighting the good fight!
WotC doesn't know the history of D&D from Minnesota to Lake Geneva and before that. What would they do if I placed this in front of their faces? Gawk, scratch heads, hand wave it aside, no doubt. This story will be told regardless! [D&D History, RJK Bottle City design]
Ernie Gygax & Roby Kuntz playing Stratego at an early IFW convention in Madison, WI. Two flesh and blood people who are still living. I met the Gygax family in 1968 and became Ernies' big brother.
WotC is telling a story about objects, 2nd and 3rd person accounts removed from flesh and blood life, this while people still living from those formative days are ignored.
Lake Geneva Game Convention 2, sponsored by TLG.
Don't recall the other peoples' names that are gathered
chatting with Gary. Late here in France. Good night to all!
Oh Look. One of the most ambitious design/translation projects ever attempted to bring Asprin's TW to the gaming world. What a cast of designers, including Dave Arneson!
If you do not know this woman and have not bothered to interview her, as she still lives, then you have forfeited
claiming to tell the true history of TSR, Gary Gygax, and D&D.
A reaction to WotC's SLANDEROUS attacks upon the creators of D&D and a whole era of gamers and citizens. This from a major board poster who shall remain anon.
Dave Trampier was a good friend of mine. Dave, Tom Wham, and myself were the "Three Amigos" of Lake Geneva. Many, many stories and adventures to tell about him. He often stayed at my apartment rather than commuting back to Joliet. More in my memoirs.
Early Avalon Hill Game Co, Staff. Avalon Hill turned down the D&D ms. submitted to them by Gary Gygax and would attack TSR over the national convention issue (Origins or GENCON). I satirized this shit slinging affair in Strategic Review

's, "Quest for the Vermillion Volume."
Sample of the 8 pages of notes/keys written in 1974 which formed the basis for the Bottle City Level in Castle Greyhawk 2. I have retained over 1,000 scans of my maps and mss sold at auction. Some of these will be in the Documentary/Memoirs,
This ancient edifice was created in January 1973 to help play-test the original D&D game. All of Gary's characters such as Yrag, Mordenkainen, Bigby, etc, all of his Circle of Eight, started in my castle and environs. Do you wish to hear the true story about it and them?
2nd map of the original Dark Druids adventure (1975) wherein Jim Ward's Bombadil died while trying to flee with the stolen Invulnerable Coat of Arn (RJK's Stories/Adventure Designs).
City of Rauxes created by me in the SuperPaint program on the Mac; for "Fate of Istus". WG8. TSR production staffers were amazed by this and used a light table (LaForce) to trace it, actually leaving out much of my detail. :)
Dragon

included the King of the Table Top board game by Tom Wham and Rob Kuntz and illustrated by Dave Trampier. This would later be reimagined by us as KINGS & THINGS.
One of Robilar's & Mordenkainen's most dangerous adventures! 1975 Dungeon Hobby Shop. Night. Winter. We face Dave Arneson's City of the Gods! Recounted by me in Oerth Journal 6 (partial below) and the Addie finally published through TSR. Frightful to say the least!
City of Verbobonc for WG8 Fate of Istus. Done with Super Paint on a Mac Plus. Unlike Rauxes I hand-numbered the keys with this before mailing it to TSR since I found the numbering with Rauxes too congested/confusing.
Last post as I won't be around tomorrow. This began as
the OZ level, 1974, completely redone as D&D Dream Lands in 1985 and now is just Dream Lands. When my hand was a lot steadier.
I was in the middle of finishing this project when I agreed to attend ARNECON and design the convention adventure for that grand event. It's coming. The full history of the Castle & Crusade Society. Every nut and bolt.
I am searching for a feature journalist to recount 50 years of D&D history for a print story about those times and from a primary POV. That story, and the people who were there such as myself, is being memory-holed in many ways. PM here or write rjk.estate

Gary Gygax not only weaned me on wargames but also on fine wines and music. Included amongst the latter was Bach; and I soon after purchased his Brandenburg Concertos. Mozart followed. My wife's family is related to Vivaldi and are his last descendants here.
Citadel of the Fire Lord. Originally crafted as a Lake Geneva Original Campaign (Greyhawk) planar adventure in 1974 with maps and keys. One of the many adventures we are eyeing for print. Centerpiece illo by Andy Taylor with red tone added.
I write fiction, D&D History, award winning RPG and board game material, RPG Design Theory and Systems Theory. I was there at the beginning and before from 1968 onward. Hear my story and of those who can no longer speak or are not invited to do so! I AM ROBILAR.
@Blackmoor_Film
Gary didn't like LoTR (but enjoyed the Hobbit) so he was very fine with making pig-faced orcs and Prussian Landwehr Hobbits in OD&D, actually reacted joyously to me berating the latter illo by Bell. 17 times?! Got me beat at 7. :)
Mary would also go on to form Powell Associates which handled all of TSR's advertising until her divorce from Gary. Because if that she sat in on many executive meetings and has told me about some of these.
@WeeWheaton
Created by my brother Terry. Never received a penny for it and it's the most iconic monster in D&D. Someday that will be redressed as well.
Back to creating words, sentences, paragraphs and projects for me. Into the Wild Blue Yonder is certainly holding up to its sometimes wild side (see attached). More on the morrow fellow adventurers!
I have decided to bring to ARNECON levels from both Castle El Raja Key AND Castle Greyhawk 2 and will try to
DM both in between sessions of ITWBY! Can you discover things Mordenkainen could not in my Castle's 1st level?
Thanks for the DMs and other fine comments. I am finishing ITWBY in the next 4/5 days so limited posting/. Here's BIO One by TSR, product list 1975 with LOTS of St. Paul Minneapolis designer titles in the fray and Dave Arneson's copy of an early BIO One. More later Bros!
Yeah. Instead of , Hey cool, never knew about that, think I'll grab an encyclopedia and read up on other cultures, it's You Bastiych stealing from other cultures!
Pretty soon eating a Taco without a Mexican making it will be CA. It's all BS, BUT can be used against them too.
About to have dinner. This is from a NTRPGCon charity adventure, 2013 IIRC. The table is filled with people who helped birth and sustain both D&D/TSR. Who will tell their story to push back against WotC's lifeless recounting? [RJK stories, D&D's True History]
@Blackmoor_Film
If I could give more likes I would. Gauntlets have been cast. My letter to Hasbro will decide the next course of action. Mark. My. Words.
Len LaKofka. IFW President, Leomund's Tiny Hut fame, several adventures published through TSR; Suel Pantheon creator for WoG. Expert bridge player. Major Diplomacy PBM promoter. He was there. Who will tell his story?
So I am curious about their "Spiral Keep" that
@Blackmoor_Film
has been teasing over the past few days? Will we see it in part or whole at ARNECON? Any tidbits to throw our way, Griffith?

an alternate Castle Greyhawk to escape the level. I have a mind to finish the alternate Greyhawk Castle and Hs. Around (near top of list). Thoughts?
Very low res City of Greyhawk Catacombs & Sewers map. Crafted for the original campaign. Thinking of running this (or my Lost City of the Elders) in a future online game (noodling that right now).
Can someone in my stream please DM me copies of the
Creation of Original D&D book's images of the preface/disclaimer in full. I wish to textualize the salient
parts re attacks on Gary and those bashing mine & ward's God's, DemiGods & Heroes. Thanks up front!
@dLsd_25
@TheRedcapsNet
They are profiting off of the past endeavors of those who created the game and slamming them at the same time as unworthy! Damning with faint praise takes on a new dimension here as they are attacking a whole era of people who they deem questionable if not outright outcast!
One of the greatest influences upon Jim Ward's earliest designs, In his campaign, Dragonkind, which I extensively played in as the main and sometimes only player, he used mobile dis from Harrison's trilogy. Many great stories I can recount from our marathon Gaming, 1974.
I bring you the not so well thought out but inclusive D&D movie, 2000. This too is being included in my scathing letter to Hasbro. BTW: Dave Arneson had a bit part in this as a wizard but his scene was cut. See
@Blackmoor_Film
icon.
There are two sides of the history of D&D because two people created it.
@Blackmoor_Film
and since Gary has passed and I was his student, co-DM, co-designer and almost adopted son at age 16, the last man standing so to speak, the second part of that story falls to me. Not Joking
If you don't know whose PC this was, and the story surrounding his dog with the chicken, then you know nothing about the foundational days of TTRPG in Lake Geneva.
I would like to point out the Hasbro, through WotC, owns all of Avalon Hill Game Co.s old stock and designs.
Also note how diverse AH was in 1961. WotC is pushing a false narrative and will likely pay hard for it if I have my druthers!
Outside Gary's old residence 2013. I met Bill Hoyer at the same time I met Gary in 1968. Bill later worked for TSR's RPGA and much earlier had designed the board game Dien Bien Phu (French Indochina war).
IFW had the Spartan 'zine that was changed to International's Wargamer. A snippet from one by Gary.
Th editor and sometimes spot illustrator was John Bobek who I posted about earlier.
So, I am always busy designing new products, RPG material, RPG History, Applied RPG Systems Theory, and so forth. One that I wish to finish is "Mythos vs. Medieval Man" which would consolidate and expand all of my Mythos arcs from 1974 onward. Any interest in this? FC below.
Been happily absent today while celebrating my wife's birthday! She is the glue that holds the company together and the very finest person! Nathalie is all and does it all. Happy B-Day Nat! And many more to come darling!
Charles S. Roberts started the board wargame industry and the highest award for design within it is named after him. Be at ArneCon 2 to meet three designers who have won it: Myself, David Wesley and Ross Maker (Kings & Things; Source of the Nile, respectively).
A big (but unavoidable) reveal for those people playing in Into the Wild Blue Yonder at Arnecon! Crossing the River of the Dead! This is no cake walk adventure... see you there! Be scared...
COArms of the Earl of Walworth (Gary Gygax's titled arms) of the Castle & Crusade Society. I am writing its history in "C&C Chronicles" and will have a ;bad product for that this year.
Highlighted Dragon article by Jim Ward wherein he refers to my Machine & Horsing Around (Greek Mythos) levels in our Castle Greyhawk 2, co-designed by Gary and myself. Accept no imitations, James didn't!
Gary's board game designs. Why is Alexander the Great noteworthy as a design? Learn of that and many other unknown facts in my memoirs and doc we are shooting!
@SJNB_Poesy
Gary's first wife, Mary Jo Powell Gygax. The most dynamic and loving person I've met on this planet and the glue that held the Gygax family together. I'll tell her story as she was a second mother and big sister to me.
R to L: A young Rob Kuntz & John Bobek playing H. G. Wells "Little Wars" at an early IFW convention 1969. Photo courtesy of John Bobek. Cannons that fire toothpicks!
The Frost Giant King who rules my Boreal Level in Castle Greyhawk 2 (1974). A nasty level adventured upon by James Ward and others in our combined campaign. Art by Andy Taylor.
Those who wish to learn about my 17 years of research regarding this new play form that Dave Arneson created
should read The 4th Category by me. It will explain what a role-playing is and where it is derived from.
@Blackmoor_Film
Well thanks Mr. Morgan! My pleasure. And we will have blazing fun indeed. More later on that quote of mine which is better understood in reference to the triad Dave<>Gary<>Rob and how we contested with each other, especially Gary & me as Master<>Student.
Various photos of me and players in my "Dungeon of Death" at NTRPGCon. I had several players from 2 sessions tell me afterwards that more of these types of challenging adventures were needed in the market. One Acaeum member talked with me for nearly an hour. :)
Lost City of the Elders. First conceptualized in 1973 for the Terrible Iron Golem Adventure (later WG5 Mordenkainen's Fantastic Adventure). The first off world planar adventure in LG for the D&D play-tests.
