NM John Brooks of Detroit, MI has made a 125-point rating run from 2089 to 2224 at the astonishing age of 77. He is just over 50 points off his lifetime (confirmed via CL lists) peak of 2276, earned at age 47. One of the most impressive age/rating achievements I've ever seen.

I saw this earlier and spent several hours hand checking it. It is riddled with errors and cherry picking: * Many events incorrectly categorized YES/NO * Several non-broadcast Marshall events crushing GMs omitted * 2900 for K-12 grades, cmon See my work:

I've consistently noticed: When strong players analyze a game, they have an almost insatiable need to examine every variation. The weaker the player, the more they want to just replay the moves and almost get it over with. To get better, you must build a disciplined curiosity.

Talked to a chess friend's new gf this weekend. I tried to explain how chess tournaments are these massively resource intensive trips that we do on purpose, and that about 20% of the time the result is total emotional devastation. I don't think she was quite getting it

I think the biggest change in chess culture by far is the level of opening knowledge everyone has. 10 years ago, 2000+ tournament players, myself included, would regularly be just staring blankly at some common position on move 6. This happens SO much less now

IM Kamran Shirazi has one of the most amazing rating trajectories I have ever seen: * Peak rating of 2457 achieved at age 57 * GM norms earned at ages 36, 50 and 54 * Rating only started going down in his 60s * Now about to turn 70 and still 2278 FIDE

It seems OTB chess has indeed entered a "Chessable era" where lower rated players are capable of playing a ton of theory, either via targeted prep or general knowledge. I guess that as a result, it is necessary to become more unpredictable and offbeat in your opening choices.

This looks like a obscure bug in Lichess (which they note can happen in rare cases including forced lines): "However, the game is drawn if the position is such that the opponent cannot checkmate the player's king by any possible series of legal moves (FIDE handbook §6.9)."

To all of you guys struggling OTB: When I was 13, I lost every game in my second tournament. I was not deterred by this, because ultimately I wanted to learn about chess more than I wanted to know what boobs looked like. This attitude soon led to success. In chess anyway.
