I took Step 2 last week and I’m legit proud to say I didn’t cry, vomit or uncontrollably shake at any point during the exam. Just that alone feels like a win. The score will just be icing on the cake. Next up: applications.

Ugh. Scheduled Step 2 for 8/23. Started with a 233. So I hit IM & surgery hard. Averaged 80% across practice shelves. Suddenly this week my CCSSAs are in the 220s?! 🤷🏽‍♀️ Simone Biles called this the twisties. Like her, I delayed to reflect - don’t want to get hurt. Advice welcome.

Getting nominated by my classmates for Gold Humanism Honor Society was awesome. Having GHHS pick me to be one of our leaders? 🤯 Absolutely bananas. In a field that values test stats > everything, it feels freaking amazing to be recognized for living out what *I* value.

New faculty guidelines from Barnard College at Columbia University. Professors are not allowed to post signs on their door "that support a geopolitical view or perspective". When talking about "geopolitical views or perspectives", faculty must talk about both sides.

It’s really been a wild ride, going from a 3.8 GPA masters and PhD student and 10 years teaching, to fighting for every single point on med school exams. 😂 Multiple choice Qs are so unforgiving. I wish tests assessed our ability to explain conditions to patients. I’d crush it.

@GabrielleIvie_ I love using ChatGPT for editing! I can say “tell me what words to cut to hit this 3500 character mark” or “what themes are you seeing here that I need to play up more?” Sometimes it even notices ideas I miss. Plus it takes the pressure off Rusty to proofread all my stuff. 😂

Because I’m WAY more proud of that than I am of passing all my exams. It’s frustrating to hear medicine ask for people who are resilient, compassionate, willing to work hard, then also penalize you when the same experiences that made you that way made med school harder for you.

Because I cared 0% how my son’s oncologist did on her preclinical, Step, shelf or board exams. I 5000% cared how she delivered the news that my kid had cancer but that she’d be with us every step of the way - and then did exactly that. More of that in medicine, please!

Can we retire the phrase “special needs?” Going to a building’s 2nd floor is not a special need. Neither is eating, quality education, traveling, communicating with members of your community, or having competent health care. Everyone needs these. Let’s design the world that way.

Finally finished with all of my core clerkships! I’ve bounced back from my pre-ADHD diagnosis struggles to fully honor my psych and OB/gyn clerkships, easily pass every other shelf, and earn high pass or honors for every clinical evaluation. Look out, Step 2! I’m coming for you!

The number of times I’ve heard this in academia! I always reply with, “No, I’m here because I work harder than you.” And I do. My dad told me from birth I’d always have to be twice as good to make it half as far because I’m Black and a woman. Lort knows that’s the truth.

@ntradsteminist YES! Also, I am 41 with 3 young kids, in med school far from family. My COL loans MUST include childcare expenses. The times I struggled most in preclinicals were when we lost our childcare and couldn’t afford the high cost of emergency care.

@MSDCINational @DocsWith @StanfordMedADIE @DM3P_Social @AAPD @dac_med @disability_UM Having extra exam time after a late ADHD diagnosis - and rotating with a doc who let me attend appts and evaluations to even *get* that dx - has been life-changing for me. Now exams are a true opportunity to show all I’ve learned, not cause for anxiety and vomiting.

I’m spending this weekend relaxing after that final mad dash through surgery, kicking it with my kids, and solidifying my study schedule for the next four weeks. It’s crazy how now I know exactly what works for me to succeed. So much less stress and angst than Step 1.

@HofkampMichael @trpender @jwolpaw Oh! This makes me feel good about my strategy! Most importantly, I’m only applying to programs I’d happily attend bc they meet my whole family’s needs. That’s my 15 signals + 5 more. My unsignaled programs explicitly say they don’t use signals or historically get less applicants.

My career advisor was like, “You have to put all this stuff in your residency application so programs know you’re human.” I told her, “I’d rather have them think I’m a robot than one good fall away from a hip replacement.” 😂😂😂 At least I’d fall trying to twerk to Glorilla?

Speaking of growing my own tomatoes, everything this year is either from seed or grew from scraps tossed into my compost pile. My corn is finally knee-high. All my tomato seedlings are grown up with green tomato babies of their own. And look at these surprise zucchini!

@SNeurotypicals If the point of tests is for the student to demonstrate their understanding of the course material, there isn’t really any pedagogical reason for restricting the allowable time for a student to do that. It’s entirely for the benefit of those administering the test.

So far on OB/gyn, I’ve scrubbed into three C sections, held two newborns, and personally cauterized one fallopian tube. I’ve also blindly chased my residents towards who knows what several dozen times 😂 but that didn’t fit into my 3-2-1.

One of my classmates just did his first ever patient presentation - and on surgical rounds! after being told we wouldn’t present today! - and I don’t think I’ve been this proud of someone since my oldest child walked. His hands were SHAKING but he knocked it out of the park. 🙌🏽

I put Catalina dressing in my potato salad. 🫣 In my slight defense(?): this is how my white grandma made it, and other than making it orange and tangy, it’s our only departure from the traditional potato, onion, celery, egg, mayo recipe. I also love the Indigo Girls. 😂
