Thank you to the many thousands of people across the whole of the NHS & social care who helped deliver the care during the pandemic. Has been a strange and difficult day. But felt it was important to give witness to some small part of the enormity of the challenge we all faced.

Today was hard. Can’t lie. Mum’s funeral. Smaller & briefer than I’d hoped but feel fortunate that we were able to have it at all. First day off from
#COVID19
since it all began. Still so much to do. Back on it tomorrow. Love you Mum. We’ll make you proud.
Watched Top Gun with the kids & suddenly realised that F14 Tomcats today are as old as Spitfires were when Top Gun was released in 1986 🤯

For a lot of reasons this was a particularly special day out. Thank you to everyone who has stood by me over the years & got me here.
But most especially of all to my Mum & Dad. Couldn’t have done any of it without you!
I’ve been in hospitals all over the country this past fortnight, they’re all running hot.
#NHS
teams who haven’t stopped since March are facing a rapid new surge in
#Covid19
cases. They need your help. Stay at home where you can. Wear a mask & keep your distance where you can’t.
This is my hospital today, right now. Spoiler: it’s not empty. Far from. Help us help you. Stay and home where you can. Wear a mask and keep your distance where you can’t. This is real, this is tough. Don’t let anyone tell you it isn’t

Moving Dad out of the house today. Been here 35 years but he can’t quite manage on his own anymore. Tough day for all of us. But looks like Mum booked an appropriately magnificent sunset to see us off.
Infections, hospital & ICU numbers all rising. We’re not out of this yet. Please do what you can, where you can to protect the people around you. Above all get vaccinated. We’re in this together; we’ll only get out of it by looking after each other.

So massively proud of the

Dad got his first dose of

For the avoidance of doubt: Vaccines work. 135 million doses given in the U.K. Nearly ten billion doses given worldwide. Plenty of evidence. Plenty of protection. Help us to help you.

Am in awe of the
#NHS
teams I work with. They’re out at full stretch right now but still brilliant and relentless every single day, 24/7. What lies ahead might be the toughest few weeks in the history of the NHS, but we can do this.
#ThisIsWhatWeDo
#COVID19
We must learn from this, urgently, dispassionately & completely; without evasion or spin, starting right now, to prepare us for tomorrow & all the tomorrow’s that follow. To do anything less would be to dishonour those we have lost & those who fought to save them.

Putting anything, anywhere on the surface of the Moon is quite a feat. Taking nearly two tons of lander, getting to the lunar South Pole & sticking a soft landing there for the first time in the history of humankind = properly special. Huge congrats

Lots of talk about how the
#NHS
should be re-organised. Nothing about how that will impact the wellbeing of the workforce. The NHS is the people who deliver the care & after Covid they’re in pretty poor shape. If you don’t recover them you’ll never be able to recover the service.
So I’ll drive to Dad’s house, say Merry Christmas from the end of the driveway & tell him what he knows already: that I love him, that I wish for all the world I could be with him but that this is just a day, and better days lie in wait, just around the corner.

Frank Borman. Hugely under celebrated legend of the Apollo era. Commanded the 1st human crewed mission to leave Earth orbit, travelled further & faster than anyone before him. Apollo 8 is viewed as one of the gutsiest missions in NASA’s history. Farewell. Thank you. Safe flight.
Bill Anders. Apollo 8, 1968. One mission but what a mission. First crew to leave Earth’s orbit. First to the Moon. First photograph of Earthrise. Was still flying at 90. Sorry to see him go. Thank you for everything Bill. Ad Astra.
We lost Mum to cancer in March, just as Covid was kicking off. The funeral was too small and too brief. Afterwards there wasn’t time to grieve. With Dad on his own now, knowing what we should do about Christmas Day has been *really* hard.

Everyone should read this: Super clear examples of when, where and how you’re at risk from

A room, a bar and a classroom: how the coronavirus is spread through the air. From El Pais.
We’re going to get through this. We’re going to be there 24/7, through this pandemic and well beyond. We always have been, we always will be. We are the NHS.

We're excited to reveal our hit podcast
#13MinutestotheMoon
returns this spring...!
Season two tells the definitive story of Apollo 13. In the meantime, you can binge listen the whole of season one – how the first Moon landing was saved... 🌘
Wish we didn’t have to do this. Wish we didn’t have to get ready to go again. I don’t know anyone who isn’t at least a little nervous. It really is ok not to be ok, I know at times I haven’t been. But we’ll do this together.

Thanks for the kind words about “NHS, Who Cares?” Things are tough right now. But if Covid taught me anything at all, it was that the people who work for the

- properly invested in & supported - can deal with absolutely anything you throw at them.

My 1st year as a doctor was one of the toughest of my life. Can’t imagine what the new cohort must be going thru with this! Needs an urgent fix for this year & a radical rethink for next. We’re short of doctors & none of this will help us keep them.

If we do not look after healthcare staff they cannot look after their patients. We’ve learned that lesson the hard way. The ending of NHS Practitioner Health is a backwards step and a false economy. Really hard to make sense of this move. Read this 🧵 from
@ClareGerada
There is no ‘backstory’ to ending of 2/care
@NHSPracHealth
other than (we’re told) - no budget. To remind, it was established following suicide of a psychiatry who also killed her baby and highlighted the barriers doctors have in accessing mental health care.
