Hot take: if your feminism doesn’t extend to Arab women who are refused/cannot access feminine hygiene products (pads, tampons, etc.) and doesn’t extend to Iranian women who are not given the right to choose to wear the hijab, then you aren’t a feminist.
Writers when they realize they have to actually write the book to get to that one scene they daydreamed about that served as the basis for coming up w/ the entire book
Let’s talk about chai, why its existence is an act of resistance, and how you can make it at home!
there’s ofc no particular reason why I am sharing my family’s chai recipe, but I figured why not save some money and make a banging cup of chai for during your next writing session
Heathcliff is described as dark-skinned and a “lascar” aka a slang word for 19th century Indian sailors in the book. This casting choice was not in. She could’ve easily booked Dev Patel.
Merry Christmas to all those who celebrate but especially to the Palestinian Christians, whom are barred from their holiest sites and are facing extinction. May God give you peace and freedom this holiday 🤍🍉
I was having a great day until my dad told me he met “some nice desi boy” that “he thinks I’d like” and is “famous” then sent me a pic and it’s just a pic of him and freaking Dev Patel in the most uncle pose possible
BREAKING: The UN Security Council has just approved its first-ever resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, with the notable abstention of the United States.
no bc I'm done. I'm done giving all of you the benefit of the doubt. you write stories about oppression, about colonialism yet you can't grow a spine to speak out against it irl? I honestly pity the lot of you who pretend there is nothing going on rn.
My thoughts about the Hasan Minhaj situation is that it is interesting and weird that a brown muslim man has to prove to a white woman he’s faced racism.
Though the presence of tea in the Indian Subcontinent dates back centuries, chai was originally a drink of consumption amongst the wealthy. Additionally, “masala chai,” or the mixing of spices to produce your standard chai, didn’t gain popularity until the 1920s.
writers realizing they have to write in order to get that one act three scene that they’ve been dreaming about since the beginning that was the blueprint for the entire wip
mayhaps we could start dropping names of other brown actors instead of doing tweets like these? I’ll start:
Rahul Kohli, Riz Ahmed, Deepika Padukone, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Mehwish Hayat, Simone Ashley, Avan Jogia, Suraj Sharma, SRK, Fawad Khan, Rish Shah

In many ways, this makes the existence of masala chai an act of defiance and resistance, which is why I, like the rest of my family, continue to make it and share our recipes with others in hopes of keeping the tradition alive.
Also adding that I’m not trying to minimize the issues of women in Iran and in other parts of the world to just one issue. This is directed at one form of feminism that doesn’t include the issues of BIPOC women and trans women into their discussions.
Beginning in the 1800s, the status quo of chai began to shift following the increased presence of the British in India, who took control of parts of Assam in order to grow their own tea on tea plantations.
I love fmc’s with god complexes. we need more fmc’s with god complexes. we need more fmc’s with god complexes who grow corrupt after hardship and want to change the world how they see fit.
The full steps will be added in a list w/ alt text in the last tweet along with tips on how to make it better/where to get spices for cheaper and/or save money for them!
ok story time:
Being an arab author is to go out of your way to avoid orientalist tropes and work extra hard to produce a book then be told by people that the names in ur book are too hard to pronounce and that it’s not historically accurate when it’s set a fantasy world
So interesting how marginalized voices are just now breaking into the market and the very company that had their editors striking for basic labor rights and fighting for diverse voices and everyone just now says there’s a decline in the market for children’s books
This act of mixing spices can be contributed to Ayurvedic and Islamic medicinal practices, with many of the added spices in masala chai providing health benefits (ginger root, for ex, is believed to promote digestion and lower cholesterol).
I’m bored and wanna start publishing discourse bc I miss the good old days so I’m just gonna say it:
I miss 5 book fantasy series. Prologues are great y’all just don’t get it. Evil chosen one > the savior chosen one (+ for corruption arc). I love romcom spinoffs.
However, due to fears of profit loss, the British began to shut down and outlaw these chaiwalas, setting up their own and distributing their tea. Tea was, after all, one of the British’ cash crops within South Asia, and heavily contributed to the colonial economy.
In order to tend & produce the product, the British transported millions of Indian indentured servants to Assam in order to work on these plantations. These servants often were subjects of harsh working conditions and exploitative practices by the plantation owners +
would anyone be down for a thread on how to make a cup of chai and the history of it? I figured the writing besties might want a fun drink for their writing session, and chai is an important part of my family’s history 🤍
(If this flops u didn’t see it)
These efforts proved successful. By 1900, majority of the tea consumed in India was primarily consumed by Indians, who began to seek out their own ways to create a more admirable, flavorful drink (British tea was just bitter and composed of water, milk, and tea).
Most popular dystopian books take the trauma that real life BIPOC face and have a white protagonist undergo it, which is why certain ppl irl only feel empathy towards them, but not the struggles of BIPOC irl
who played a key part in establishing socioeconomic inequalities within the British Raj.
While successful at growing, the tea that was originally farmed failed to produce adequate profits, leading the British to launch campaigns promoting the buying +
and consumption of tea amongst lower class Indians.
They would set up shops, give away tea at events and community gatherings, and even went door to door offering tea to consume.
We need to bring back long series’ in publishing so we can experience some good long slowburn. I’m talking book 1 paving the way for an unspoken thread between them, close touches not occurring until book 2. Book 3 is the “I didn’t know how much u meant to me until I lost u.”
Seeing this go around again, but I urge all readers/writers to be aware of ethnic nuances and understand what may be a minority in the West could be a majority in the native country in which a BIPOC comes from.
The reason why I’m urging it is because +
we studied this a lot in college. the term “the middle east” is colonial and orientalist, as there is no standard as to how it should be defined. you can’t use religion, you can’t use ethnicity, and you can’t use language. it’s a term for a land drawn by the west for extraction.
had this conversation with a friend but i think a lot of people from the 'middle east' including myself are growing increasingly tired of the term and how its used, its a colonial term that makes it sound like a mystified distant place. use west asia or north africa depending
Lil self promo bc why not:

again? i would love to meet some new writer friends (& hype up the ones i’m lucky to know already) so go ahead and (re)introduce yourself! 👀💕
my biggest goal as an author is to create a character that’s so universally hated that people spite me when I continue to let them survive against all odds
Going to be offline for a couple days as my grandma passed away. I don’t really have many words but inshallah one day I will return to her home in Jerusalem and plant her one thousand olive trees.
I wish I had enough followers who love gothic horror books where I could say “my book has a hot monster” and everyone is like “I support the hot monster”
I make it my mission to describe brown eyes as the most beautiful eyes in the world in every wip of mine for all the girlies and besties who were told that they were not unique for having them 🫶🏽
is Sci Fi truly dead? Because I just came up w/ a Poppy War inspired wip critiquing Saudi Arabia’s exploitation of South Asian migrant workers and I have to get it out there!!
I am on a one woman mission to get more South Asian rep in fantasy. I’ve got a South Asian vampires WIP idea, a sci fi WIP idea inspired by the exploitation of South Asian workers in the Gulf states, AND am currently writing a Frankenstein retelling ft a South Asian fmc.
If your first thought is to dm someone that gothic horror is for “whites only” after they post about their wip, then that’s a reflection on you & your own ignorance and insecurities fam
allow me to reintroduce myself on this fine eid morning 🌹
hi! my name is nadia (nadianoorx) and I’m a sff pakistani-palestinian author who writes about brown kids that are sometimes heroes and sometimes villanous <3
i’d love to make new mutuals, so let’s connect <3
The ministry of health: 400 Palestinians, most of them are children and women, were killed by Israeli bombardment in Jabalia refugee camp, north of Gaza. 31.10.23 .
Writing besties I have a feeling this is OUR year 🫶🏽 last year? That was a trial run. But this year?? This is the year we achieve all our writing goals
I just wanna say it’s incredibly disheartening to see BIPOC feel the need to prove their identity to the masses. Yes, someone faked their race, but it should not be up to the book community let alone anybody other than ourselves to determine if we’re BIPOC enough.
As the community reels from the horror caused by the murder of nine unnamed woman, another victim has been discovered.

Again saying this bc some ppl didn’t get it the first time ^ he should be played by a Romani actor and I apologize that I failed to say that.
I’m also not going to hear your takes on what Indians were doing in the 18-19th centuries & how they were treated by the British.
I don’t think anyone realizes the level of insufferability (ik that’s not a word) I will achieve when benedict bridgerton’s season comes out. we have all been waiting for this one since season 1 and when it comes ?? let’s just say y’all will have to SEDATE me
Hot take but I would rather Disney make a film about a desi princess rather than cast a desi to play Rapunzel. Not to mention Tangled has antisemitic tropes 🧍🏽♀️
Please for the love of god stop comparing the plight of Palestinians to the Hunger Games. What is happening in Gaza is real life. The fact that you can watch THG & compare it to a real struggle is a privilege they don’t have. That isn’t uplifting Palestinian voices, +
I just want to write books where all of my LI’s and mc’s confess their love for each other in Arabic bc I’m sick and tired of both being seen to be portrayed as a language for terror when it is one of the most prominent languages of love
Hi

I lost contact with friends in Gaza three days ago. I don’t know what has happened to them, but I like many know what is to come and I beg, don’t stop talking about this. Keep protesting, keep spreading the word, keep holding every person who allowed this to happen accountable.
Breaking: lsraeli warplanes launch the most violent series of air attacks against Gaza Strip since the beginning of the aggression. The attack started 20 minutes ago and cut off internet and communication from large areas of the Strip.
So not only have they refused to accept their own people, they’ve continued to bombard Gaza with rockets thus putting the lives of millions at risk, including their own people. I feel like the message is clear here.
Israeli PM's office has confirmed that Israel declined to accept two Israeli hostages from Hamas, stating that they will not address what is considered to be "mendacious propaganda" by the group.

no because how do y'all know your world building makes sense? I'm sitting here drawing it out trying to make it make sense AND I DONT KNOW IF IT MAKES SENSE
I don’t know why I need to clarify AGAIN but feminism is for all those who identify as a woman 🧍🏽♀️that includes BIPOC women, Muslim women, Jewish women, trans women, etc.
For those who asked for an update: two of my friends are ok! internet services were recently reinstated in their area and it appears throughout Gaza as well 🤍 still waiting to hear back from a few more but inshallah they are alive as well.

Maybe, and hear me out, maybe Hollywood is lacking creativity and viewership retention is lacking because casting directors keep casting the same 10 actors & we are oversaturated with reboots and remakes. Maybe nothing stands out bc everything looks the same.
throwing another one there:
also editors if you’re interested in a ya historical (w/ gothic horror elements) set at a museum where art comes to life ft magical art curator siblings trying to stop a secret society from changing history by using art, I also have a book for you <3
slowly grasping with the fact that I’ll be on sub for my adult fantasy that’s an ode to resistance & ft morally complex characters (a villainous dragon riding princess, a rebel pirate who doesn’t want to be a rebel) and I’m just…scared and tired lol. everything in that +
