Wealthy people live in a different world.
brand new hand made (not by us) Teak cabinets are being demolished tomorrow.
They just paid 40k for these but now decided they want inset and want to spend another 50k for new.
this is their vacation home in the historic district…
What’s your opinions on this green and wall paper?
I gotta admit when we did the recessed panels and crown I did not envision this.
I honestly can’t decide if I like it or hate it.
What say you?
Another custom coastal home with pecky cypress ceilings.
This one has pecky ceilings in the common area’s of 3 of the 4 stories!
The “pecks” are caused from a fungus that makes unique patterns in the wood but it dies quickly after the tree is cut.
Pecky cypress only grows in
12” wide solid poplar pilasters
21” tall solid poplar beams.
None of these are structural, just for cosmetics.
I wish I would have taken a pic before but this was just a plain drywall ceiling and walls.
This same design goes from foyer to dining room and great room.
Sine I’m on vaca I thought maybe I should show some failures
We built this sapele and cypress gate for a home we had previously done 6 figures of carpentry labor for the previous year.
She wanted a gate dividing their historic courtyard she could feed a stray cat without any
Anyone want to guess how much each of these hand made solid brass/chrome lever handle sets are?
Whatever you are thinking …
Double it and then add $100
The Eames lounge chair!
Very popular chairs that have been around decades.
A real one cost 7-10k
A client broke theirs and asked if we could fix it.
The middle section is new, top and bottom are original.
I refinished everything so all matched.
Can you tell the
I would like to add that the owners are genuinely good people.
A lot of comments are pretty negative about them, they are a retired couple that probably saved their whole lives and want their vacation home how they want it. Nothing wrong with that.
Beaded coffer ceiling with Venetian plaster.
It’s pretty rare we do a coffered ceiling without crown but this is a very clean look imo.
It’s a blend of traditional with woodwork and plaster and Modern with clean straight lines.
I usually lean pretty heavily towards
We don’t do a lot of cabinetry , we just aren’t set up for it.
But we did this bathroom cabinets and trim about 6 years ago
Just got the call that they want to remodel again and want us to do the work.
In your opinion Is remodeling every 6ish years long enough to get your
Beautiful home on the inter-coastal waterway.
Great room with board and batten walls,
Nickel gap ceiling with
White oak beams and case openings.
Very traditional coastal look but I like it.
What do you think?
100-200+ years ago carpenters didn’t have 12” sliding compound miter saws.
Every cut was by hand! (Super impressive)
Large miters where too long of cuts to keep the blade from walking so they notched and coped.
When renovating a historic home we give the owners/designers/
@risktolerator
Not surprising.
We did a house a few years ago on a famous park that got wallpaper that was hand painted by an artist in Italy that was 17k per roll!
It was so ugly too, it was different birds on an off white background. It looked like something out of my grandmothers house
Peruvian walnut mid century modern chairs.
I made these for my Pastors office.
My upholstery skills are pretty basic…
But the chairs turned out pretty cool I think.
If I make any others I think I would do off white leather/fabric.
What do you think?
Anyone like ski-ball?
Lol 😂
We try to do a lot with charities.
This is a donation for a local charity carnival.
It will be painted and have scores on different holes.
No point of having $ if you can’t help others.
And let’s be honest, creating odd, one of a kind things
@tr123xyz
Also the wealthy being frugal was much more common before covid. Today $ plentiful and easy to spend knowing they will buy less tomorrow than they do today
@trevizo_gabe
I volunteered at a summer camp this year and my opinions changed pretty dramatically after.
It’s not that young boys (10-18) don’t want to play outside, it’s that most don’t actually know how. Parents never made them so they never learned how.
Once they learn how to play tag
Curly Maple and Peruvian Walnut oyster tray with a Padauk heart inlay.
And 2 Walnut oyster knives.
I made this as a gift for an engagement party.
If you don’t like oysters it could be used at a charcuterie board too.
Good gift? Bad gift?
@amaldorai
Good luck.
Better plan on paying double.
The work is “ours” to photo, market ect.
I mean no disrespect but that’s one of the weirdest things I’ve ever heard. Even on twitter….
Clear cypress table with a poplar diamond center.
I literally made this on a jobsite out of scrap material.
It’s 50x98 so it’s pretty big.
Would you put this in your dining room if it was free?
What if you had to pay for it?
@CollinJHumphrey
A friend of mine told me years ago that our job is to be a psychiatrist or guidance counselor not a contractor.
We might be hired to build/fix ect but we only get paid if we can navigate the unique personality of each client.
This is probably the most intelligent thing he’s
@paulsaladinomd
Agree with this but have a few points to add:
Most store bought wood cutting boards are sealed with oil or chemical finishes to make them look pretty. BAD
Fancy designs in board may be glued with solvent or urethane based adhesives. BAD
(Water and animal based glues are fine)
Tight fit board and batten on the stair walls.
White oak window box and stair treads.
Black powder coated aluminum and stainless steel cable balustrade.
I would have liked to put a white oak top rail on the balustrade to tie everything together a little better. But still a
Craftsman style Wainscoting!
I’m usually not a huge fan of craftsman style, it’s pretty plain.
But I think this home turned out nicely.
What do you think?
Some faux antique cabinets (built to match antique cabinets) with ash tops and shelving.
We don’t use ash very often but I think it ended up being a nice look.
Ash is fairly cheap and easy to work with so I’m somewhat surprised it’s not more popular.
What do you think?
@amaldorai
Pre CO no, not necessary.
I don’t post “secret “ things and never locations.
We’ve done several secret room , hidden safes, secret compartments in furniture ect that I purposely don’t post
@JulieChangRE
It’s almost a lost art!
It’s definitely not easy but is possible with the right tools a quality template and time.
The cost of doing this is why it’s so rare.
We would charge 1500 -3k per joint depending on length and location.
We did these cool SOSS paneled doors recently.
When open it looks like a case opening
So much cleaner than a traditional hinged door and no ugly track like a pocket door.
If cost wasn’t a concern would you rather have these or standard hinged/pocket doors?
Other side of room from brick wall I posted earlier.
True stile and rail raised panels.
Solid poplar.
This is actually the room that separates 4k sqft historic home and the new 2500 sqft addition.
Historic society dictates that the old structure and new building must have
This was just a plain vaulted Sheetrock ceiling a few days before!
Beaded tongue and groove over the drywall and appearance grade 2x’s.
Turned into a cool cottage look.
You like it or prefer drywall?
So sometimes in 200yr old historical renovations stairwells get tight and balustrades some crazy planes.
This leads to the formally unfinished 4th floor.
@tr123xyz
I agree with your thinking because it’s what we see too but it’s wrong here.
This is a nice retired couple that want their vacation home how they want it.
We did a home for a wealthy 30 yr old and this was truly wasteful. Probably 1.5-2mil wasted on
“It doesn’t feel right “
@fenderjazz1978
If that’s true you may be an idiot.
Each of these are more than an once of gold and
“You throw away a lot nicer by the dozen “
By the dozen implies more than at minimum 2 dozen.
2 dozen would be throwing away 50k
And that’s ignoring the “a lot nicer”
No one is “throwing
Historic mortise locks!
They are beautiful and dependable.
But…..
They are expensive to buy/have restored and installed.
We charge $500 per lock on painted doors and $700 per lock on stained doors to install.
🧵
@hez22273
lol not like that.
Find the angle of the stairs, it’s probably close to 40*.
Measure the hight of the chair rail, it’s probably 2”1/4
Assuming it’s 40* and 2”1/4 rail:
1) Cut the top piece back from the corner at 20*.
2) Cut a 2nd piece of rail 3” (long to short) with a
@amaldorai
lol.
Yes it’s sooo offensive to post pics of work my comfort did on an unknown house on a unknown street in an unknown city in an unknown state and an unknown region of the country.
This is a you problem around your own insecurities.
This seams like an old trend that has become new again.
Raised (or applied ) panels only on the walls in the foyer and only on the ceiling in the parlor
This is in a newly renovated historic home with a prestigious address.
I think it ties the rooms together nicely, what do
Want to know the difference between a $50 whiteside router bit and a $20 Bosh router bit from Lowes?
Both used on same material (Ipe) with same router at the same speed.
The Home Depot and Lowes router bits don’t even compare to a Whiteside bit.
Anyone see a flaw here?
It drives me crazy 🤪
But it’s what the designer wanted and the owners love it.
Recessed panels, Venetian plaster, iron balustrade and sinker cypress flooring.
“ Hi everyone
My name is That Carpenter Guy and I have an addiction to making odd random things out of wood”
I admit I have a problem.
I’m here for help.
Made this as a gift to the church we attend.
Black walnut and hard maple.
I really need to learn how to do upholstery.
99% of the furniture I build is all wood but I struggle with that 1%.
Hope everyone has a great weekend!
Cypress!
We do so much of it that it almost becomes boring.
Almost.
I still think cypress,pecky cypress and sinker cypress are a beautiful costal look.
Who likes roller coaster? 🎢
Well I have great news for you!
Just start a small business!
You can get the thrill of a roller coaster almost daily!
1 minute you are killing it financially and can do no wrong.
Next minute you are on the verge of bankruptcy and just can’t seem
Another wooden children’s toy!
Wooden balance bike for a 2 year old.
Made this for a friends son, who loved it.
Teaches basic balance before they try a real bike.
I considered making wooden tires but thought that might be a little much.
What do you think?
Free tips of the day!
1) When changing the top of shop table spend 5 minutes and route the corners.
Quickly sand with 220. No more splinters or hose/cord getting snagged.
2) adhere sand paper to different router scrap of various shapes. They make sanding a breeze
@DurmBull
Door hardware should match fixture hardware in each room.
A dining room may have brass light fixtures but the bathroom has chrome faucet.
So brass on dining room side and chrome on bathroom side
Who loves Pecky Cypress?
We use a lot of it and everyone loves it.
We are on the coast and everyone wants the elegant yet rustic look of Pecky.
Here’s a few doors we did recently.
Want more Pecky pics let me know
A Coat of Arms or A Family Crest
Is something we rarely get to see.
But we recently renovated/restored a historic water front home that had the original owners Crest cut into the exterior cornice.
The new owners wanted to respect the original owners and incorporate the crest

Trex is a good product.
But…
Try walking barefoot in full sun on it.
You won’t have any skin left on the soles of your feet.
Walking on hot coals is for the weak, the really brave walk on hot trex decking. 😂
Azek brand decking boards stay much cooler.
And no I have
@GPM23609100
It’s about 50/50
I should have worded my original post better.
It’s not a 40% higher quote.
It’s 40% higher for the casing portion of the quote.
Depending on the trim schedule that’s only 3-8% more on the total. Not a massive cost.
Example:
on 100k interior trim quote
And the owner approached me with a proposal for him and I to partner on a new business venture!
I learned a lot of lessons from this:
Sometimes the worst things can turn into the best.
Never, never burn a bridge. You never know what it might lead to.
I just spent the last 4.5 days volunteering at a summer youth camp for the first time 🥜
Here are a few of my take aways from the experience:
1-Kid’s know more than you think, and hear everything, even when they’re not paying attention they still hear you and absorb it.
The labor cost for went from $2200 for standard knob install to now being $23,000!
I explained this to her and her exact words where
“We have more money than we will be able to spend in our lifetimes, we want everything to be historically accurate, no matter the cost “
Volunteering at a local youth camp this week.
Won’t be on here much.
Im actually the only counselor that isn’t staying the night…
Because I have a business to run
I leave around 9pm and arrive around 10am so it gives me a few hours in the morning to keep things going.

Semi controversial opinion 🔥🔥🔥🔥
We refuse to do work for “Flippers “
We stopped about 4-5 years ago.
We just have completely different objectives.
Our goal is to do the highest quality craftsmanship possible that will last decades.

First thread for this account 🚨
Going to try to make a new thread every few days. Will start with the absolute basics and work our way from there.
Tape measure basics.
I posted this like it was nothing but this thing almost kicked my butt.
Getting the leather off and back on properly was the hardest part.
At one point I was very concerned I was going to rip it I was pulling so hard.
Also replaced the left arm support. It was fairly easy to

Also can be a nightmare when trying to pinpoint a leak.
And if you have a leak with spray foam you will have mold because there is no airflow.
The pros usually outweigh the cons but there are cons to consider.
@CoFoundersNik
I have a legal immigrant from Honduras that works for me.
He gets utterly disgusted when seeing citizens or immigrants wasting their lives.

Finished the antique English rocker.
If you do rattan for a living you have my respect.
It’s a long, boring, time consuming, tedious task that I hope to never do again 😂

Any way I could talk you into posting links for these diamonds you post?
Some friends and I have been talking about buying in foreign countries and I’d love to share it with them.

@JeffGrenz
We’ve had this conversation with clients before.
Told them the only 2 options where for us to build the rails to be easily removed and they remove them their selves after, we would not remove them for them. Or all glass rails.
They opted for glass rails
@trevizo_gabe
We renovate/restore a lot of historic homes.
1st things we have to do is board off the crawl spaces. If not done within a few days it becomes a new party spot for homeless/addicts.
We even have to padlock porta-potties or drinks will move in. Not joking, literally move in.
I’m not sure what’s more annoying :
People who don’t return their shopping carts?
Or
Restoring an antique walnut rocking chair from England and the new Marquetry breaks 🤬?
I think it’s about 50/50.
