JP cons have an ecosystem that encourages participating for the fun of it that many others do not. OP already mentioned that table costs are cheap but printing there is also very cheap! I’ve only boothed in JP once (ioriku only i7 event) but would like to share my experience

this post is doing numbers, and I wanna say that an even bigger part of why doujin culture is so huge in Japan is because Japan as a society values the arts in a way America simply does not. America generally has contempt for the arts.

It really is amazing to me how much weird resentment many people have for professional artists/writers/creatives. They can’t conceive of a world where you get to do something “cool” and it could be kind of miserable.

I've gotten a lot of entertainment mileage out of showing clips from kids' anime shows that are extreme or violent or scandalous to Western eyes. Doesn't make them not for kids, it makes them from a culture that has different ideas about what's appropriate for kids.

You really think this children's show that aired for 10 years on a children's TV network is for kids? Heh. Well, here's a clip of a character dying. Not so childish now, is it?

it's weird how three of these are referencing Okita Jūzō from Space Battleship Yamato and one of them is Okita Jūzō from Space Battleship Yamato

LRT: American anime fans are all like "if we didn't see it, nobody outside of Japan saw it" and the rest of the world is buried in Albator DVDs, Goldorak parade floats, and Los Caballeros del Zodiaco figures

the comments on this one are all "hey, this is our work van, we have it padlocked so nobody steals our tools, don't call the cops on us, because they'll shoot us dead" so maybe don't flip out when you see a van with a lock

Ardith Carlton is reporting that Yuu Yamamoto passed away last Sunday; 80s anime fans know him as the creator of the J9 series Bryger, Baxinger, and Sasuraiger, shows that captured the imagination of a generation of fans.

wait, Japanese anime studios are going to show us their takes on Star Wars? You mean, besides the ones Urusei Yatsura and Sasuga no Sarutobi did 30+ years ago?

I suspect like me there's an entire generation of anime/manga fans for whom Golgo 13 was their first look at Japanese comics that didn't involve robots, spaceships or ninjas - Saito's work was unlike anything else I'd seen.
