has been accepted to Black Media Studies conference being held by Tulane University next year! yey
phd candidacy exam is SOON (next montj!) and i am actually 🫣 really liking how my thesis is shaping up?? 17k words, 47 pages, intro, lit review, theoretical/conceptual framework, and methodology 🥵.
#PhDTweetive
i agree wholeheartedly with Black women and seeking a soft life of rest, on your terms.
But beloved. Conspicuous consumerism and luxury aspiration is not a political statement 😩. Black capitalism is not the liberation you think it is.
Got my offical PhD Candidate conf and 😌:
"Overall, the student exceeded expectations (which were already very high) & demonstrated exemplary intellectual engagement & preparedness for doctoral study – it is a delight to note that this student is now a confirmed PhD candidate!"
Ya’ll mind if i scream??
Found out I got a mark of 92 on my MA dissertation!!!!! I’m so, *so* proud of myself.

There were many times I was unsure I would be able to do this dissertation justice. Black women's internet experiences is a sorely overlooked critical Internet studies area in 🇬🇧

noted racial trauma impacts us all differently
Racial trauma is what makes me fret w/ anxiety about calling the GP, due to previous racial discrimination where my pain’s dismissed. What should be a non-event, I must mentally prepare for.

"culture fit" is coded language for "we think you're different/Other and you don't fit in here."
Stay far away from companies that proudly talk about hiring people that "understand the company culture" 🙅🏾♀️

I also talk abt this in some of my work! The ways that "Black Death"

is exploited as excess/virality. Black Death becomes normalised, simultaneously Black people are traumatised with the click, share, swipe of Black death online —faciliated via wires thru middle passage
Very telling that US media (& personalities) get more upset about The Twit's lies about voter fraud (& suddenly know the word 'lie') than they did when he was calling neo-Nazi's "very fine people."

One day we’ll have a conversation about how liberal feminism has diluted the theory of intersectionality to mean “the inclusion of Black and Brown women’s perspectives” instead of critical analysis of power and how it relates/is entangled with race, gender and class.
The abuse in the replies to this thread is reason 70billion illustrates exactly what i mean when i say ppl are not interested in politics that liberates all, just their own. how are u a supposed UCU member, after reading this thread, sitting there typing “scab.”
is it crack?
Story time. My first day of postdoc fell on a UCU strike week in 2018. I agonised about what to do but decided I needed to go in. Why? Because I’d been living below the minimum wage for *years*. It was late Feb/early March in Sheffield and I hadn’t had heating for weeks. 1/
It’s incredibly late coming, but I’m so proud to share that I’m this years curatorial research resident at

I've been in tech for 6 years & I'm only starting to feel I've found a community. This is hugely down to

“pet to threat” a phenomenon, wherein WoC enter the workforce & are taken under the wing of a cheerleading mentor—usually a white man—only to have that support curdle into hostility once their competency [is realised]”
i could really @ the men who did this 🙂
i really want Black people, particularly Black women to divest from continuing to perpetuate narratives about resilience, strife, and the 'strong Black woman' myth. especially when there is an opportunity to centre joy and re-imagine.
no. it is enough now. i want no part of it.

ok? I left the flat for a 30 min cycle to get some clean air, the first time since Monday, and the parks are full, people are queuing outside at Wonder Waffle, drinking outside Spätis?

Today would've been my mum's 61st birthday. I miss her every day. Birthdays I find quite hard to process: do I celebrate or not? It's hard to not think about what I *would* have been doing should she still be alive.

has been overall so🥰; but, being an immigrant is *hard* and I am more privileged than most!
Still, I rise 🙏🏾
Observation: many
#digitalrights
orgs work on "digital threats to democracy," but solely focus programmatic work on: privacy & security and "ethics" and bias.
digital threats harm most marginalised first; an intersectional, anti-racist, discriminatory approach is imperative
UK discourse and knowledge on race/identity and potlitics is so laggard. it has to be wilful. Everyday the same inane comments. Everyday "does race matter" this island pls.
i am begging, IMPLORING, internet policy folks to stop calling social media platforms public squares.
they are not public anythings *right now* when they are owned by billionaire megalomaniacs, and arguing for regulation that positions them this way does not get us closer
The term "women and people of colour" SUCKS bc theres a lack of attention to the intersectionality of race & gender that I, a ~black woman experience.
I rly hate it re work context bc diversity programs benefit primarily WW as Crenshaw's 06 research found. Likely still stands.
📢because i'm phd-ing from October, i'm transitioning back into consulting for civil society orgs in tech policy,
#digitalrights
etc
i'm keen to work with small orgs who have (or want) an intersectional lens to the above in campaign strategy/implementation or research/policy 📨
So
@mazi_emekar
told me to TBT to this photo on the left to remind everyone of my beauty (his words) but this implies i'm not *still* a baddie, so i am blessing your timeline with a loc'd photo, too
I think a lot about the “African” start-ups that aren’t founded by Africans, but often Europeans who are exploiting the market/region to achieve high profit margins. That are VC backed. & the tech press write headlines like “Fintech fuels Africa’s tech boom.”
#digitalcolonialism
I’ve made it! I’m gonna be speaking at one of *the* Engine Room’s Community Calls and sharing my framework for intersectional tech policy + discussing this important report!!!

doing a phd is just being at the whim and mercy of my mind every day. opened up my doc this afternoon to try and write and my brain said "lol wut" and then "*blank*" which brought on the panicky/spirally feeling, so — no writing this afternoon, then!

wrote about this as 3 PhDs in a piece titled "The Future of Black Scholarship in Britain: Tensions Between the ‘Researcher’ and the ‘Researched’"
which we're looking to get published bc we were messed around by a journal !!
Funding bodies have a responsibility in this as well. At this point white led research on communities of colour is an act of institutional racism. There is abundant talent, and plenty of opportunities for allyship to step back and foreground a colleague who gets routinely ignored.
After sitting on this for way too long, I'm finally ramping up efforts with . — the community for black female fitness professionals.

@IndigStudiesMQ
I spend WAY too much time thinking/working on Big Tech's harms to Black people.
It's beginning to take it's toll. So, as a baby academic/ECR, I've decided while platform gov & experience is my focus, I gotta start researching/writing about Black joy online.

@aoifemrtn

we knew. and fair play to the journo for at least pushing back. it’s always such a red herring when issues are framed as concern for young ppl by bigoted folk

that is intersectional+inclusive @ intersection of academia/tech policy/social justice.
There are a few that purport this in BER/LDN...but then are communities of majority white women 🤔

it's an absolute achievement — one of my best — and i just wish i could call my mum.
