I woke up feeling weirdly emotional about the football. For those of you not following England are in the final of
#EURO2020
. Which is massive. And as a Black Londoner it feels... complicated. I want to try and explain why.
So I don't like that flag. But I do like this England team. I love the heart of
@MarcusRashford
, the skills of
@sterling7
and the calm mature leadership of
@GarethSouthgate
. I like that they take the knee, that they don't just "stick to football"
But another part of me watched Raheem Sterling against Denmark and my heart soared. He works so hard and plays so well and he ignores all the shit from the media and the abuse from the trolls. And that part of me thinks: This is England. And I am part of it and I belong to it.
It gets even more complicated for me because neither of my parents consider themselves English. My mum is from Wales and my Dad is from Ghana. But I grew up here and on Sunday I'll be cheering on the boys. But not waving the flag.
#thisisengland
.
Never thought I’d wear this shirt but from standing for racial equality to feeding school kids, this squad have made clear that they represent ME.
For anyone who ever used these lions to scare us, take a good look.
THIS is England.
And if you don’t like it, YOU go home.
There are many of us who grew up in England but were never allowed to feel English. Who see the St George's cross and remember the people who fly it who say we don't belong here. That we should "go home"
The joyless lefty in me (be real: we can be pretty joyless) wants to warn of the dangers of nationalism, sees the crowds of drunk men on the streets and feels scared, worries about England winning.
It's how I feel when I listen to grime music. Or walk down Ridley road on a Saturday morning. Or sit in Clissold park ranting with
@LolaOkolosie
. Or when I go to another country and they don't put milk in their tea.
Years ago when campaigning for
@hopenothate
with
@krsegal
&
@RukayahSarumi
we were ambushed by the EDL at a train station. A crowd of very angry people who hurled abuse at us and anyone black they saw. They wore the St George's cross on their clothes. Carried it in their hands.
Were it not for
@SamTarry
and the police I don't know what would have happened that day. I'll never forget the young black girl who got off the train with us who was just trying to go home. And the monkey noises they made at her. And how scared she looked.
If you're at Old Trafford for
#MUNNEW
you might have seen a plane fly over before kick-off. Because
@we_level_up
supporters are breaking the wall of silence surrounding Ronaldo's rape allegations. We

I met
@faizashaheen
over a decade ago. We bonded over music, dancing and our similar upbringings at opposite ends of London. Years later she got involved in politics for all the right reasons & was treated appallingly. Faiza tells
@garyyounge
and I her story on
@over_under_pod_
I've been genuinely moved by how thoughtful Sancho, Saka & Rashford's statements have been about the final. I was nowhere near this grounded at their age. Worth a read.
For those of you who just rolled your eyes at Boris' latest racist and sexist Telegraph column, please remember this from
@garyyounge
. If Boris were a woman he would have been fired YEARS AGO.
24 hours after they dragged
@faizashaheen
in front of this panel she was knocking on doors for the Labour party. One of the most brilliant and hardworking people in politics. Unsurprisingly you can hear
@garyyounge
and I talk about this on
@over_under_pod_
tomorrow.
“Honestly I’m so shocked right now, to be treated this badly”
Faiza Shaheen, who was set to stand for Labour, describes hearing that her candidacy had been pulled over liking a series of Tweets which she claims Labour said would frustrate its campaign
#Newsnight
A lot of people felt and were unsafe last night. That's not OK.
@RefugeCharity

Been
@mozilla
for a year and at the risk of going all American taking the job was the best decision I could have made. I am so so excited to be part of the team. Too many people to @ but big love to you all ❤️.
General rule is to stay off social media when you're sad, but a quick thread of people to follow/support if you're devastated by last night.
@BenHCarrington
is an academic who knows about race and sport. He is an ex-footballer so really gets what happened last night.
I know the blame game has already started because... this is England. But this image will stay with me from last night.
@GarethSouthgate
may not be perfect but he is a real leader and so he will take responsibility for his mistakes. I'm proud of him and the team.
Reading this exchange and remembering all maddening arguments I've had with people who went to private schools who exuded boundless confidence even when they were totally wrong. But the school you went to has *nothing* to do with class.
In a way that confirms everything we know about class, those who intellectualise it only are seen to have smarter takes than those who talk about life experience. I had an emotional reaction to this but it grates against all the hardships I’ve ever faced.
Tomorrow
@we_level_up
meets the biggest press regulator in the country to change domestic violence reporting forever. Will you be part of the campaign?
And for those of you who don't click links:
- She went to the police the next day to do a rape kit.
- He lawyered up and paid her less than he earns in a week to sign an NDA.
-There are leaked documents where by *his own account* she said no more than once.
Exclusive: a shooting range in Wallasey defends using images of Shamima Begum as target practice because of a ‘record number of requests’ from its customers. It allows people ‘to have some light-hearted fun bringing out the inner child in all” they tell us. More at 10am
💯 'Some people do mistake the mantra “the personal is political” for the “emotional is empirical”, mistaking their discomfort, disgust or sense of isolation for a political event in itself, thereby eviscerating identity of its collective meaning.'
"The term "identity politics" should be retired. It is no longer worth claiming or critiquing, not because there is nothing to interrogate about the role of identity in politics, but because the term itself has become an obstacle to that interrogation."
Inspired by many discussions and outright arguments about masculinity with my brother I wrote about
#InternationalMensDay
for
@guardianopinion
. He was not convinced it was a good idea.
I'm late to reading this by
@carysafoko
. The day may have passed but the arguments are enduring, moving and crucial since the better future so many of us want can't happen without the generosity of spirit embodied here.
Today

This is a feminist issue. This is a child protection issue. This is fucking scary. Muslim women in the UK are treated like political footballs and not human beings. I am so tired of this shit.
I try not to retweet praise of myself but this was so lovely to read. Reliably the most praise and support I get comes from other black women. Thank you

Proud to have worked with
@RosamundUrwin
to expose how many women are being harassed on Facebook. Most depressing stats we unearthed with
@Survation
were about young women and BME women
People will say he hasn't been convicted, but in England and Wales only 1.6% of rape cases see a suspect get charged. If you want to understand why this is happening read up on the issue:

I feel you. Mine was "total badass who sung Otis Redding's song better than him" I didn't even know she had two kids at 14 until I read that times piece....
Personally I know very little about football and tend to rely on the opinions of

I've spent the last few months working with
@Odangaring
on how Twitter is failing Kenyans ahead of an important election. We talk to the team

a lot behind the scenes. They have engaged with the work

Okay so, this has happened!! In less than 72 hours since launching, we've got a meeting with IPSO and they're going to be considering the implementation of our guidelines on domestic violence deaths. 🎉
Lucky to meet
@WXelka
irl today. While we were having lunch two young people came up to us to say how inspired they are by his work! Really cool to meet such a dedicated activist. Désolé, je ne parle pas très bien français 😬.

on its way to you later today. Special shout out to everyone who joined our WhatsApp party last night, as requested we discussed socialist snacks as well as the vote 🍕🍇.
Also, this was led by

Ok so true story. This year I broke up with my therapist because she cried during a session. Reader: she was a white lady named Karen. Could I *be* more 2021?
Bad news: there's 6 Tory leadership contenders and the contest runs until November 😔.
Good news:
