Read through the thread below, and then watch this video. You’ll see what the UK achieved in spite of a hostile EU. When they thought May’s deal was secured: “We finally turned them into a colony. That was our plan from the first moment.” Who would want to be in that club?

I see that @PeterTatchell wants to "Thank #Brexit Voters" for needing a €7 visa-waiver every three years, from 2025 onwards. Not to pat myself on the back, but I've got a few things I'd like to thank Brexit voters for as well, if you'll indulge me. A Thread🧵 #ThanksBrexit

@dc_lawrence I agree completely with your conclusion, but I'll push back on one part: "Brexit was a mistake." That's unreasonable. The UK is a democracy, and the people chose to leave the EU. There is no right or wrong answer, there is just the will of the people.

It is striking how many women are at the top of the field in pre-seed deep tech VC. A few notable examples, but there are many more: @AmberIllig , @DStrachman , @cyantist and @sarah_cone . Backing great founders before anyone else, and schooling their peers in the process. 👏

@FreyaP11 @SalfordMe2023 Living in a healthy democracy means tolerating other views, and accepting the outcome of votes. I’m sorry if you are willing to let a political system spoil a friendship — that seems a bit silly though?

@davidyelland You do not get to rewrite history, David. A referendum was in the Labour manifesto, as well. The majority of Labour constituencies voted for Leave. Get over it. You lost. We moved on.

@supertanskiii Farage who was calling for an end to the riots? Farage who has trying to warn Westminster about the discontent around immigration for years? He didn’t foment this situation, he just gave those people a voice in politics.

@paulg The primary driver of Brexit was the ability to self-determine. Legislative independence. For many, it was anticipation of issues exactly like this which led them to vote to leave the EU.

@andreasklinger eur/acc > eu/acc Partly because it sounds better to speak aloud. Partly because there are 44 countries in Europe, not 27. The UK, Norway, Switzerland etc are all important players in this. Partly because the excessive EU bureaucracy is a large part of what holds Europe back.

"The most efficient capital allocators should get more capital to deploy." - @BasedBeffJezos An encapsulation of my personal e/acc focus area. The more optimal the allocation, the faster we move forward. There has been far too much waste in the last decade.

@MazzucatoM It’s rare that long-term potential is allowed to trump short-term stability, and that’s ultimately what Brexit was about: decoupling from the EU for the possibility of a brighter future, at the cost of some transitional pain. As democratic events go, it should be celebrated.

@implausibleblog It's not hard to look up, if you know who she is. Instead of condescending speculation, maybe include her name? Boris honored a number of No.10 staff that had been through managing the pandemic with him - particularly those who had been unfairly targetted by the media.

@worsematt Have you considered that the British public didn’t really care about any of those things? They wanted, as demonstrated by exit polling, legislative independence and controls on immigration. Reason #3 was simply the urge to take the opt-out while it was available.

@levelsio That’s absolutely not the whole story. I’m not saying it wasn’t a mistake, but there was a lot of questionable stuff going on at Uber at that time.

You'll see people like @shaunmmaguire and @DavidSacks trying to blame this (and the general chaos of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan) on Biden. It was Trump who struck the deal that forced a US withdrawal by May 2021, after tweeting that he wanted all troops home by

@levelsio This is the problem. Let countries champion their individual identity and values. Let them champion local ecosystems. ALSO make it easy to move/grow/sell between countries to make it competitive. The EU has the backwards because they want to push some weird European identity.

@AbhayVenkatesh1 The danger is that intellectual homogeneity is terrible for innovation and creativity. If SF can keep attracting the best from around the world, and embrace the diversity rather than packing everyone into the same gyms, eateries, Patagonia vests and MBA programs, I’m bullish.

Matt Clifford is the best shot at forging a new techno-capital heart in Europe. His vision could drive prosperity in the UK, as well as renewed growth across the continent. I hope @Keir_Starmer gives him time, and ensures the great work at ARIA continues unimpeded.

When you fund people based on their relationship with large funders and not market performance, then you get cronysim instead of profit seeking. The point about why abandoning the profit motive is bad, is because vulnurable constituents like pensioners rely on VC returns to live.
