first of all, his character focuses on being “sane” which is quite literally him being a normal human being with emotions, yet he doesn't want that. i see a lot of people referring him as “insane” with a specific scene in s4 this scene, he isn't. he WANTS to be insane.

but sadly at s5 ep 11 the last episode, after fyodor's “death” nikolai felt “happy” from what he said but he immediately brushed it off and said nothing more but the feeling of emptiness and mourned over fyodor's left arm that was left off at the explosion of the helicopter.

mostly the cases of losing a loved one is causing you to lose yourself which to avoid that people take breaks to recover. however in nikolai's case i dont think he will do any of that and instead leave off with the guilt he caused. he wished for this and it finally happened.
