So Therese Coffey was on #Ridge earlier saying that 6 “new hospitals”have been built. Just now on @LBC she’s said “10” have been built. So they’ve built 4 new hospitals in the last 2 hours! Getting sick and tired of this rubbish. #Lies

Shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Andy Rourke. It really hits home hard when it’s a member of a band you’ve loved all of your life. His bass was such an integral part of The Smiths sound.

#5albumsSF4 It’s U2 as we know it but now with added Eno. Some of U2’s finest moments are on The Unforgettable Fire. From A Sort Of Homecoming and Bad through to the rawness of Wire, the ambient textures of 4th July and MLK and the wonderfully atmospheric title track.

#20FaveBands 10 New Order New Order can be frustrating at times but when they strike gold, they strike it big time. Their incredible 80s output is the reason they’re in and the song choice? There can only be one. The Perfect Kiss (12” Version) | 1985

#20FaveBands 4 Simple Minds Their run of albums from 1979-1982 is so special. Inventive, experimental, rhythmic and highly melodic, it’s a sound that still sounds contemporary today. Music that I will never, ever tire of hearing. Glittering Prize | 1982

#TartanTop10Old 1 This Fear Of Gods | Simple Minds | 1980 Much maligned and much revered on here but the music they created between 1979-1982 will forever remain special. I’ve been a fan since NGD and I can’t see that changing anytime soon.

#1987Top20 3 Just Like Heaven | The Cure Everything I love about The Cure encapsulated in one song. The intro alone is worth the price admission and on this occasion, it’s a rare example of a song title perfectly describing the song itself.

#1986Top20 1 There Is A Light That Never Goes Out | The Smiths This had to be my number one. For at least a decade this was my favourite song of all time. Still can’t believe it wasn’t a single back then. Thanks @barryma40000659 See you again in ‘79.

#DebutAlbums90sTop15 7 Electronic | Electronic | 1991 When two musicians from two of your bands unite, you hope the results will be good. Luckily Sumner and Marr’s debut didn’t disappoint. The sample track has to be this beauty. Some Distant Memory

#1979Top20 11 Life In Tokyo | Japan Produced by Giorgio Moroder and a signpost to a new direction. Again it wasn’t a hit (originally) but it should have been.

Just seen that “Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me” by The Cure was released on this date in 1987. It was the first Cure album I bought and intended to study whilst listening to it. That didn’t work out as quite as planned but my musical education was all the better for it. #TheCure

As #12inch80s comes to a close I was toying with the idea of singles based challenge for July. Instead of 12” mixes, this will be singles clocking in at less than 3 minutes long. Concise, immediate and not overstaying their welcome. Any year & genre. Working title #45sUnder3 ?

#1979Top20 4 Transmission | Joy Division In the year of Unknown Pleasures, we also got this seminal single. A post-punk classic (or just simply a classic), music this raw and this thrilling can be a rarity but not where JD were concerned.

#12inch80s 3 Love Like Blood (Version) | Killing Joke | 1985 A mid-80s stunner and then some! A bit like Infected from day one, I don’t think there’s a bad mix of this track. Magnificent stuff.

#SynthPopSeptember 17 Rent | Pet Shop Boys | 1987 Now we’re really talking. It’s a heartbreaker, it’s mournful and it’s one of the most affecting songs in their catalogue. PSB at their absolute best.

#5albums79 Secondhand Daylight | Magazine The second Magazine album and my favourite one of theirs. 1979 was a stellar year for releases but I still can’t find anyone else who sounded quite like Magazine. Post punk at it’s finest.
