🕷 🐛 Please do not feed the bird at all no matter how much it begs. Grounded swifts are generally dehydrated and emaciated and can die if they are fed in this condition. Under no circumstances must you feed meat, mealworms or seed. A swift is an entirely insectivorous bird. ❌

2️⃣ REHYDRATE carefully by placing a damp cotton wool bud to the side of the swift's beak. Take care to avoid the nostrils and don’t try to open the beak.. as it breaks easily. ✅ DONT drop water directly in mouth ‼️

NEVER 'throw or launch' a grounded swift in the air. ❌ ✋ a swift on the ground is usually a swift that needs specialist help. Never release a bird without consulting a specialist carer/rehabber. But healthy swifts can take off from a palm of a flat hand!

As a first aid measure. take a cotton wool bud and soak it in water. Try to squeeze a small amount of water into the side of its beak to help rehydrate it ✅ Please do not put a swift in a cage. A grounded swift is unable to fly and a cage will irreparably damage its feathers ❌

I know of lots of times when the bird has been thrown and dropped straight back to the ground and had the most awful painful death or the swift had to be put to sleep.

They said they are putting nestboxes up- SWALLOWS DO NOT NEST IN NESTBOXES!! This nest site has been active for 7 years. A simple solution is to install boards under the nest sites to catch the droppings. AND wait for the young to fledge. #SaveShrewsburyAmbulanceSwallows

The housing development will have around a 100 S-Bricks grouped high up on gables, the gables are grouped together too. The locations are selected where there is a clear line of flight for Swifts to access/egress the S-Bricks. Here are the first ones going in @FionaJudge1 !

Shrewsbury Ambulance Station, they nest in the garage. Natural England have authorized a license to remove/cull due to risk of contamination. Which, we are informed, is minimal!! Thankfully the young will be taken to a rescue- discussions still ongoing

This is why we never release swifts from height! Most swifts are dehydrated and weak. Never release them from height as they can fall and injure themselves more!

@swifts_uk I found once a poor thing, I let it fly from the second floor, but it did not help, it just landed down, so I took it to a vet, he found it dehydrated and upon parasites. Hopefully, they helped.

Swift rehabber @ChetCunago in her 3rd season of caring for swifts gravely injured due to trying to get in to their blocked homes. With no protection of nesting habitat all year round site loyal swifts are making EPIC migrations only to die on arrival. The govt needs to help them
