🧵Ok here it is: the parallels to Palestine in
#Andor
Tony Gilroy recently said the finale was partly inspired by anti-apartheid protests in Palestine, but the finale isn't the first or only time they've made parallels.
So here's a list off the top of my head
I have SO MANY thoughts on this. The finale isn't the first or only time
#Andor
has made parallels to what Palestinians go through.
I need to make a video (maybe a few) because this is so important
Remember how District 12 was forbidden from hunting and Katniss had to sneak out to feed her family?
It's not that they ONLY produced one resource; they were only ALLOWED one. So they'd be dependent on the Capitol and the system as a whole. That's the point. Divide & enslave.
The Hunger Games has some of the actual worst worldbuilding in fiction. What do you mean a district the size of one or more US states produces ONE resource and nothing else
Spyglass, the studio behind the ‘SCREAM’ films, has released a statement on firing Melissa Barrera for speaking about the genocide happening in Palestine:
“We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide,
@petarsaur
.....Except it won't. The Capitol ships resources around and keeps each district fully dependent on them so they don't revolt. They have cops EVERYWHERE to enforce this.
Also fyi, that's how things work today in our global economy. Fuel, grain, etc dependent on a few countries.
THIS is why erasing Doctor Doom’s Romani heritage is a problem.
It’s not about variants. It’s reinforcing the idea that this demographic (and POc in general) isn’t worth a compelling story treated with respect and care. It gives racists fuel for their hate.
And yes, there's parallels to 🇵🇸:
- Capitol bombs a hospital full of wounded when Katniss arrives 👉 Israel bombs hospitals & refugee areas claiming Hamas present
- Katniss isn't allowed to hunt for food 👉 Palestinians aren't allowed to collect rain water
The Tuskens aren't uncivilized, barbaric, murderous monsters. They're the indigenous population of Tatooine that got driven out into the harsh desert by settlers that attack them and steal their resources. They're mostly trying to protect their own & survive.
Barriss Offee: selfless, brave, kind, intelligent, confident, heroic.
I want her in live action and selfishly want to play her. No idea how to make this happen, but putting it out in the universe 😊
@starwars
@TheCloneWars
Amber is awesome (love her in Punisher) but..
Let's get a North African woman to play Barriss given the cultural inspiration behind her tattoos & clothing. Also her features in TCW: high cheekbones, long nose, full lips, prominent eyes/brows look Egypian (I'm biased tho 😂)
@petarsaur
I'm not saying it's a good system. It's an abusive one that's keeping the Capitol in power and is delicate, hence Snow trying desperately to keep everything in balance. It's designed that way to keep the districts in line. But it won't collapse on its own. Hence the revolution.
Literally this. You want me to believe the most advanced and heavily funded military in the world, with cutting edge surveillance technology and no restrictions for privacy etc. can't find a bunch of guys?? That they need to bomb civilians to hell to get rid of them?? BE SERIOUS.
Israel, leader in surveillance technology, can't find any Hamas.
I hate that everybody pretends that's what's actually happening. Like Israel doesn't know Hamas leaders aren't in Gaza.
“Tony wrote the first scenes for us to cheer for Dedra, but in the end you don't do it anymore. She is not just a woman in a men’s world, but a fascist in a world of fascists. It was important to see that power corrodes women as much as men” - Denise Gough at Lucca
#Andor
@iamdanielgeske
Basically each district could only produce one resource and using the land was forbidden. The Capitol supplied them with the rest of the resources in exchange for what they produced. It made each district dependent on the Capitol for basic necessities so they wouldn't revolt.
@petarsaur
You're missing the point again. The districts were fenced in. Inside it was just the one industry. Katniss crossed the fence to hunt.
And again we do this in our world. Laws mean nothing when corporations lobby govts & bride them. Or they operate overseas in exploited countries.
Y'all don't realize how vital mosques are in Ramadan. It's the one time a year we get to spend hours there in worship at night. Mosques are a place of peace & refuge from the world's stress & worry for Muslims.
Al Aqsa is one of our 3 holy sites. Banning access is just evil.
Netanyahu announced today that Israeli Arabs will have limits entering Al Aqsa during Ramadan. Perhaps no entry, perhaps only over age 60. Apartheid, remember, is not just for Palestinians in West Bank but also for Israeli citizens if they are Arab
And while we're at it, BOYCOTT "The Hunger Games:
The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes" Two of the producers signed the letter thanking Biden for his support of Israel.
1/ Skeen's story about imps taking over his brothers tree farm is what has continuously happened to olive tree farmers in Palestine. The family land, where they've lived for generations, gets taken by force and they're kicked out (if they're lucky) or 💀.
This is a long and heavy post, but needed to be said. Seeing these events on screen, the riot tactics, ethnic cleansing, dehumanization of native peoples, abuse of power, etc is necessary. I hope people can connect the dots and understand the commentary that
#Andor
is making
Quick
#Andor
thought: I like that the Kenarı dialogue wasn't translated. We could still understand them and that in itself was powerful.
We don't need to speak the same language or live the same life to understand each other.
2/ The empire taking over and destroying the Aldhani's holy site, is just like what happens yearly in the Al Aqsa Mosque where worshippers are prevented from going, then attacked during holy days with tear gas & rubber bullets. The mosque windows and walls also get ruined.
🧵Let's talk about the Tuskens in
#StarWars
:
The Tuskens story in
#BOBF
means a lot to me as a North African woman. They're heavily coded as nomadic North Africans/Arabs living in the desert and up to that point were portrayed as subhuman, barbaric, uncivilized, murderous.
Y'all there's still home for
#Willow
!!!
@DisneyPlus
please please don't remove it! So many of us love it and the show's not even a year old.
Incredible cast, a fun adventure, great story, and beautiful character growth. Plus comedy and creatures.
#SaveWillow
3/ Protestors in Ferrix throwing stones at troopers, Clem Andor being captured & hung trying to keep the peace. Palestinians use stones to fight back with against a fully decked out occupying force, and simply being in the vicinity of any protest can get you detained or 💀
4/ Cassian, as a young man, running at troopers with his stick for what they did to his father, leading to his arrest & imprisonment. This is what Palestinian youth deal with: men in the family constantly being detained or 💀. They try to fight back & receive the same punishment.
5/ Cassian simply walking on the beach being arrested because a trooper thought he was suspicious, held by his neck, then imprisoned without due process is how most Palestinians get detained. The "tactic" to hold people by their necks, whether using hands or knees ...
BREAKING: SCOTUS will hear Johnson v Grants Pass, a case about if homeless people can be punished for using things like pillow and blankets when sleeping outside if there are no safe shelters.
This is the biggest SCOTUS case about homelessness in decades.
6/ In the finale, the way Ferrix locals were fighting with their hands, rocks, bricks, while imps had full gear, snipers, automatic weapons, fired at will, & snatched people from the crowd to detain them, is exactly how Palestinians are treated, abused, and 💀 on a daily basis.
8/ The way Bix was detained and tortured brutally, using experimental techniques, happens to Palestinians who are detained to get info, without charges or trial. They can get experimented on and the resulting tactics gets sold to militaries and police forces around the world...
5b/ The "tactic" to hold people by their necks, whether using hands or knees, is commonly used against Palestinians (and was taught to the US by those soldiers). Most Palestinians are held without charges or trial, in brutal conditions including torture.
And while we're at it, BOYCOTT "The Hunger Games:
The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes" Two of the producers signed the letter thanking Biden for his support of Israel.
In light of what's happening in Palestine (again) I was reminded of this thread.
If you watched Andor and understood who & why the rebels and Ferrix residents were fighting, you understand what Palestinians are facing every day.

Temuera is an Indigenous man that's been mistreated by his employer. This happens all too often in the entertainment industry. "Biting the hand that feeds him" is a weird phrase when they've sidelined him time & again.
Tem gets to feel how he wants & express it how he wants.
I got news for the
#BringBackBobaFett
crowd - Tem going on stage at a con and biting the hand that feeds him isn't going to make that happen any sooner and may reduce the possibility of it happening at all.
#TheArmorer
is NOT the spy. Let me explain🧵:
- Her whole purpose had been to protect the covert & maintain The Way
- She's been accepting of "outsiders/enemies" like Grogu & Bo-Katan without judgement
- She's changed her mind when presented with new info
#TheMandalorian
We're also BOYCOTTING Blumhouse Productions movies (Jason Blum who founded the company signed the same letter thanking Biden for his support of Israel).
"Five Nights at Freddy's" is in theaters right now and the other 2 are scheduled for early 2024.
Oh look here, traditional North African/Middle Eastern women's clothing, used in a movie inspired by Arab and Middle Eastern cultures, worn by a white woman.
But when WE wear it, it's oppressive and barbaric. F**K this movie.
Disrespectfully,
#GenocideJoe
can F all the way off and never speak again. You've already enforced and funded this genocide. Geriatric patient for a President.
HELL NAH!! Cosplaying a character and getting 501st approval for screen accuracy IS NOT siding with the Empire & it's ideologies in-universe.
You're just lashing out cause he pointed out your problematic word choice and you tripled down and exposed your racism. Way to go 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
So that New Yorker article full of lies cost him this job.... A white woman and her deliberate bias cost a brown Muslim man an amazing opportunity.
Every comedian embellishes their stories & jokes. We know this. It's comedy, not an autobiography.
Roy Wood Jr. says Hasan Minhaj was "going to be" named the new host of

but it "fell apart" amid controversy over embellishing jokes.
Wood exited the show, but he would've stayed for “the rest of the year” under Minhaj and “we’ll see what his vision is, whether I
"What happened to the hostages?"
Israel DENIED multiple offers to release them, already killed a few (witness reports from 2 released hostages), and now Israel is B0MBING them along with all the Palestinians in Gaza...
This is why she'll always be garbage.
I don't know why y'all are stressed about

finale.
Obviously Bo-Katan, Grogu, and the Armorer are gonna team up to kill Gideon and save Din. Easy peasy. Then happily every after rebuilding Mandalore, Bo and Din rule together while raising toddler Grogu 😁 RIGHT?

‘MONKEY MAN’ almost never got released after Netflix dropped the film because they got spooked by the film’s political undertones about India.
The film is now in theaters after Jordan Peele watched & was instantly blown away by it.

It’s always the west oppressing POC women in international spaces. Imane has the support of the Muslim, Arab, & North African worlds. It’s ⚪️ “feminists”, transphobes, & racists against her cause she dared excel in her sport.

The way Grogu, a Jedi, stepped in and stopped the fight between Axe and Paz is so symbolic.
Din even confirms he didn't learn that from him. Grogu is fully accepting his Jedi training and he'll make waves for both Mandalorians & Jedi.
I'll say it. Can they stop hiring EK??? She's done so much harm to lots of fans.
She has a pattern of problematic behavior: islamaphobia, terrible remarks about Barriss, racial stereotypes (Latine, South Asian) in characters, orientalism... It's inexcusable.
Fresh announcement!
@ek_johnston
is writing a Qi'ra novel called Crimson Climb.
Details to follow, but it feels safe to assume it will detail her ascent through the ranks of Crimson Dawn during the events of Solo.
I grew up with stories from my uncle and great uncle about the trips they'd go on in the Egyptian desert with them, the food they'd eat, their knowledge and savviness in the desert, and their kindness.
I'm glad they finally fixed the narrative in

Until Mando started treating them with kindness & understanding, then seeing their story in BOBF.
There are nomadic tribes living across North Africa and the Arab peninsula to this day. They have such rich cultures and are the most generous people you'll come across.
Amber is awesome (love her in Punisher) but..

So you’re telling me that video has people with a history of abuse and a catfish, yet Black and POC women/femmes were “being too negative” and “disingenuous” for calling it performative??
Spare me.
Our instincts are never wrong. Listen to us next time.
Mosques in Gaza using their speakers (which are used to announce daily prayers) to announce their own genocide.
They're asking Muslims to pray for them cause they know they have no one but God to help them now.
I have no words. This broke me.
From Gaza now: Mosques are the only means of communication through speakers. 'We have no communication with the outside world. They are using their military might to harm us. We have no power but the power of God, no one but God. Please, pray for us.'
Their clothing to protect from the sun, jewelry, mobile homes, way of life (ride large animals, herd animals to survive) and language that people don't bother understanding is similar to nomadic tribes that live in the deserts of North Africa, the Arab peninsula, and the Levant.
Yes please!! I'm watching clone wars, on S4 and have been willing a return of Barriss ever since I saw her & Ahsoka escape certain death together.
But this is what they do with her?? A Muslim coded character?... Who ever thought this was a good idea??
@nknapper
MUTUAL??? How?
She was all but screaming at him to leave her alone (the only reason she didn't scream was to not draw attention to their interaction). She was unsettled by him showing up to her workplace and harassing her
When they were slaughtered without any thought or remorse by Anakin, even padme didn't react with any concern or humanity.
That always bothered me (especially killing the women and children) but I didn't realize how much that affected me....
This is so true. Hollywood is using the firing of Melissa Barrera from Scream to gauge how the public will react and see what they can get away with. STAY ANGRY!! BULLY THE STUDIOS!
This take screams hot garbage to me but I can't speak for Latines.
I can only think of my own experience as an Arabic speaker raised in the west and how our main rep in Hollywood is Rami Malek. He doesn't speak much Arabic, but that doesn't make him any less Arab imo.
You’ve never protected Amandla or any of your women/POC actors from vitriol, hate, and violence from “fans”. When will it be enough? When will you do something? Or is your silence by design cause the toxicity creates free engagement?

SAG-AFTRA is now on strike and "fall festivals are f*cked," says one studio executive: “You can’t premiere movies anywhere without your stars. No stars, no movie.”
This is literally not news to me. Israel has a LONG track record of purposefully spreading misinformation by framing things THEY have done as being done by Palestinians.
Here we have them kidnapping & caging children:
"How is the world watching a genocide LIVE and not doing anything to stop it?? How are we letting a few demons in power annihilate an entire population???"
Military propaganda, Zionist propaganda, and they intentionally hide Sabra in this first trailer even tho she’s a main character?? Turning a black man evil and insulting Sam with “You’re not Steve rogers”?? Playing in our faces and insulting us with drivel… BOYCOTT

My God. Where do I start??
- Islam started ~600 years AFTER Jesus
- Jesus is a prophet in Islam
- Killing prophets is forbidden
- Muslims believe Jesus was never murdered & was taken to the heavens
- Islam is a continuation of the teachings of Jesus, not a separate religion
I’m not arguing with y’all anymore.
Barriss’ arc was DEEPLY Islamophobic & made no sense. It NEVER should have been her.
I’m deeply attached to Barriss. She’s the first character in Star Wars that actually looks like me (North African Muslim woman) and I’m allowed my opinions.
