People will scoff but Starmer is first Labour leader since Kinnock to come from a working-class background. He didn’t grow up in some fantasy world of dinner party socialism unlike many middle-class leftists .Explains a lot
It is now almost obligatory now to personally abuse the leader of the Labour Party in the most horrible of ways as proof of being ‘left’ Extraordinarily sad when you consider it is the absolute opposite of what Jeremy stood for in 2015 . So why doesn’t he say a word against it ??
@AyoCaesar
Anyone with the remotest notion of being a socialist who cares about working people does have an obligation to end Tory misery for millions and vote Labour but being stuck in a self-righteous bubble you won’t get that
The political illiteracy of anyone actually believing
#StarmerOut
because he wrote a piece for the DM is astonishing . Preaching to the converted rewarded us with an 80-seat majority .
Finally fit and well enough year after finishing cancer treatment to walk eight tough miles in Lake District and start serious weight loss programme with 10000 steps a day I am 62 and do not need locking up however I may do if the Govt try it
#over50s
@Beppe_Lite
Lucky you . Two million on the threshold not so much . And civil servants reckon only a tiny fraction of one million who could get PC but don’t claim will do . So thousands will freeze this winter . Not me but it’s not about me it’s about those too scared to put heating on
former Labour MPs like Chris Williamson sitting back on their hefty Parliamentary pensions and endorsing narcissistic super egos like Galloway thus enabling Tories are beneath contempt . Neither would be anywhere without
@UKLabour
Making no apologies after lifetime on the left of Labour for backing
@Keir_Starmer
not only committed is the best hope we have of turning things round . I am a lifelong socialist joined Party 1975 Northern working-class So what. We achieve nothing without power
Clocked up another 4 miles today in@
#BatleyAndSpenByelection
lots of support out there for
@kimleadbeater
from Cleckheaton folk many switching to Labour and vote holding steady 🙏
I was once young socialist now old one .four Wilson governments 18 awful years of Tories then three more Blair/Brown governments . Trouble is no-one under 25 can remember difference Labour made. However imperfect changed lives Time Young Labour did homework instead of ranting
So much goodwill here in Batley and Spen . Meanwhile Galloway and his male entourage riding around on a bus shouting while hundreds of activists risk sunstroke to get us over the line . Lose or win proud to be here with them
@PeoplesMomentum
How about taking on the Tories for a change FGS ? Had my share of criticisms of
@UKLabour
over the years but we were in government. Actually winning a General Election doesn’t appear to be a priority for you anymore ,
Just gone into overdraft with 10 days to go before next pension payment as £125 direct debit for heating went out . That’s the reality of state pension for millions . Talk of tax breaks is a con most struggle to survive
@Dr_Pam_Jarvis
No I don’t agree. I was 66 last October got NO fuel allowance because the cut-off was a week before my birthday . Just about manage on state pension had factored this in to help me with debit of £125 a month . I don’t have a private pension neither do millions
@rheawolfson
Am not excited by prospect of more election catastrophe and Starmer came up time and again on the doorstep as someone people wished were leader . He has experience intellect and necessary gravitas for the job.
@WestminsterWAG
You seriously think that’s OK ? Why am I not surprised Tories have no sense of common decency . Truss has impoverished millions and she gets rewarded to the tune of £115,000 a year which is beyond wildest dreams of most . You people are a disgrace
Labour members had two chances to vote for Andy Burnham . They didn’t in fact was excoriated by left in 2015 for abstaining on welfare Bill . He is GM Mayor cannot stand end of story . Nice guy but FGS stop obsessing about leaders if we don ‘t stop fighting we are finished
Saddens me to be at odds with people on left I know but seven years as a councillor changes your perspective and writing funding bids for a local food bank as I did this morning and yesterday brings home the urgent need for Labour to do well in May. Anything else is posturing
Apparently hosting the Tory Party conference in Manchester is costing the Home Office £2m in security measures . One wonders why they go there -and why we have to pay for it
@OwenJones84
Tactical voting in a seat where Labour had absolutely no chance of winning is what happened and for all our sakes I hope Lib Dems and Greens do same in Batley and Spen to where am getting a train in one hour .
Pension finally in bank after six long years and much diminished savings . Lucky to be here and lucky to have had that cash resource . Unlike many
#50sWomen
. Hope the fight for justice carries on hang in in there !
@snowleopardess
@carolhibbert51
@ICMRX5
And those on pension credit do not pay council tax TV licence and raft of other benefits so you’re talking about two million pensioners at least £1500 a year worse off than pension credit recipients because they are a few quid a week better off .
So it’s a no show for our Tory MP Craig Whitaker at the Calder Valley education hustings in ELLAND . What utter contempt for the youngsters looking forward to it . Good luck
@JoshFG
we know you are committed to this constituency’s future . Whitaker is another 🐣like his leader
@PeoplesMomentum
I am currently claiming contributory JSA it is £77 a week . And it ends after six months . Should have had my pension four and a half years ago . Here’s the thing . The only chance we have of real change is a Labour government . You are really not helping with this stuff .
@Kevin_Maguire
It was an SNP amendment three weeks into government. Other left MPs abstained and Starmer has already conceded cap will be looked at . It really wasn’t smart strategy and rules them out for PLP input for six months and of course Conference
@LouiseRawAuthor
@sylvia_howells
I am a councillor and Labour Party member too since 1976 . Not loving your denigration of thousands who devote their lives to local government and protecting services . Us not THEM how dare you
To say I am disappointed in Labour Left is putting it mildly . Hurtling back into abyss enjoying comfort zone narrative of betrayal instead of working with leadership ensuring policy gains made in last 10 years stay there . right of the Party will be laughing their heads off
@OwenJones84
No in Calderdale we won pretty much all the seats we could in 2018 but hey Tories who couldn’t bear to vote Labour this time voted Green so we got an extra progressive . Elsewhere in already Lab seats our votes tripled and doubled wrong analysis
The world will never be transformed while middle-class activists with £50 to splurge on echo chamber of ‘true socialist ‘ self - indulgence fail to understand events like Radical Knitting and ‘Theatre of the Oppressed’ change nothing .I’m done with this Tory enabling nonsense .
By 2003 and Iraq thousands of Labour members including me had had enough of Tony Blair ‘s politics never ever did I hear or witness personal abuse on scale some are chucking at current leadership . You are not fighting for socialism you just discredit the left and yourselves .
Been volunteering pretty much every Monday for past three years to help run local food bank . Maybe it’s just me but something abhorrent about royal family cheering us on when frankly donating some of their vast wealth to good causes would be a lot more helpful to all
@silverslideman
@BootstrapCook
@StevePeers
Not everyone who went to Cambridge is a privileged toff we lived in a council house and I was encouraged by dedicated teachers and scary nuns it also happened to cost nothing at the time which helped obviously
Nothing brave about not backing
@UKLabour
when millions of us are terrified at rising living costs and prospect of ultra right PM . Wallow if you must but it’s pathetic
My last day as a Calderdale councillor . Good luck to all of you who will be enjoying your first day as
@UKLabour
representatives after tomorrow
#NeverVoteConservative
looking forward to Friday and hopefully amazing election results
@LauraSmithCrewe
You don’t think Tories defecting to
@UKLabour
is a Good Thing ? If it helps us on road to government it has to be just endless whingeing doesn’t tbh
@OwenJones84
The only reason we held Hartlepool 2019 was Brexit Party split vote . In north east Ian Lavery nearly lost Laura Pidcock did . I do not see any parties to the left of Labour on ballot paper what I do see is a former Labour MP who should be ashamed of betraying the Party
£35.000 worse off and counting …and no extra help with cost of living till we reach 66 . No winter fuel payments and no travel passes . A scandal no one seems to register
To those of you who are complaining about the pensions please note women born in the 50’s have lost thousands through the tories stealing it from us by changing our retirement age! Just kindly remember it’s not a benefit it’s what we have paid into from 15years of age!
If ‘taking on the Right’ of
@UKLabour
is more important to you than taking on the Tories you are no socialist . Plenty of arguments to be had once we get a
@UKLabour
government. It’s been 12 long years of austerity so let’s pack in the in fighting
@JackEDeakin
Are you kidding ? Of course it helps working-class kids . In the 1970’s I got a full maintenance grant paid no tuition fees at Cambridge and never had to ask my parents for money - which they didn’t have anyway.
@CherylP54918090
By the time I reach pension age in October half of my life savings will be gone . I count myself lucky because most people have none but it’s still a disgrace
When I meet lefties who hate Starmer so much they threaten not to vote
@UKLabour
abstain or worse three words spring to mind . Bourgeois . Privileged . Affluent . The others I am too polite to say .
@democracynow
@jeremycorbyn
Sorry you should say this . strategy was not to campaign in safe seats but hit the marginals. Also tons of tactical voting which - worked . You shouldn’t betray us in this fashion and disappointed you choose to do so . Looks foolish tbh 2019 was catastrophic
