This can't be right,
@trussliz
's energy plan is to loan businesses making huge profits, huge sums of public money and then we - as consumers - have to have to pay more over 15/20 years to repay it.
That's mad.
Just tax their excess profits with a proper windfall tax.
Resigning ministers get an exit payment equal to 1/4 of their ministerial salary.
Has anyone totalled up the cost of the last 36 hours to the tax payer as a result of the Prime Minister’s intransigence and limpet like quality?
Things the Conservative Government want to make more difficult.
❌The right to vote.
🪧The right to protest.
💪🏻The right to strike.
It’s almost like they’re scared of the public.
The 5p reduction in fuel duty is less than the 5.8p that petrol prices increased by over the last week. Diesel rose by 8.0p last week.
So the Chancellor has successfully reduced fuel prices to where they were last Thursday…
One thing is certain. By failing to get her budget through the House of Commons - on every accepted metric - the Prime Minister has lost the confidence of the House of Commons and should therefore call a general election.
If the Government make a u-turn later today on A-Level results then that is to be welcomed. But let's be clear, the motivation for such change will be more about political management of a crisis than genuine concern for the welfare of young people and their futures.
Those of us in leave seats with small
majorities in towns and small cities *begged*
@Keir_Starmer
to listen to us and our constituents when we told him that the party’s brexit policy was losing us votes. He wouldn't listen and we lost.
If the General Election is held on May 2nd 2024, that just 566 days away.
Or to put it another way, still time for 14 more Chancellors of the Exchequer.
To those saying "yeah, but Labour never had free school meals over holidays."
You are correct.
Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and the Labour Government from 1997 decided to lift 950,000 children our of poverty instead.
Turns out when you cut poverty, you don't need free meals.
I’m indifferent to the colour of passports. I’m not indifferent to homelessness and poverty. £500million would be better spent on the latter, not the former.
The Speakers ruling that a motion already put and defeated cannot be asked again is surely the end of any second referendum or
@peoplesvote_uk
given the motion put and defeated last week?
The entire allocation for the West Midlands over four years is LESS than the total value of cuts faced by Stoke-on-Trent City Council alone over the same period.
This is a huge disappointment.
Times p1
£1.6bn for deprived towns but...
.... money to be spread over 4 years rather than single payment, to the surprise of Labour MPs they are trying to win over
Is TM therefore facing lots of pain on this fund but for little or no gain
Immensely proud to have been selected as the
@UKLabour
and
@CoopParty
candidate for Stoke-on-Trent Central today.
Thank you to all the members who gave out your faith in me - I promise I will repay that trust by working hard everyday to deliver a Labour GAIN.
The violence in Stoke-on-Trent is not reflective of the welcoming, generous and tolerant city we are.
Racism is not patriotism.
Violence is not protest.
Extremism is not welcome.
I'm re-standing to be our
@uklabour
and
@CoopParty
candidate for Stoke-on-Trent Central at the next General Election.
We need to win back Stoke-on-Trent Central & deliver a Labour Government for Britain - to continue helping those who have been abandoned by the Conservatives.
122 years old.
@UKLabour
born out of the collective need from trade unions, cooperative society, socialist groups and campaigners for social change - 129 delegates voted into creation the Labour Party. Our aim then as it is know, to create a fairer, more equal world.
In Stoke-on-Trent, you’ll need £84,000 in cash or other assets available to avoid selling your home if you need care.
And given average house price in Stoke Central is £124,000 you’d have to use 2/3rds of any sale on care cost.
And that’s before the cost of food & utilities.
2019: Boris Johnson promises that no one will have to sell their home to pay for social care
2021: Boris Johnson announces plans that will force working families to sell their home to pay for care.
Another unfair proposal and another broken promise from the Conservatives.
There were fewer people than this at my grandfather’s funeral which took place in Nov 2020 because the rules didn’t allow his 35 years of public service to his town and his union to be properly marked.
But at least these guys had a good time…
Jeremy is right. Legally, the date of our exit from the European Union has been set in both UK and EU Law. And the evidence from the Clerks of the House of Commons is that there exists no mechanism for stopping Brexit in the current legislation.
Thank you to everyone in Stoke-on-Trent Central who have sent kind messages but it’s not just me who lost - behind me was an incredible staff team who cared and worked hard for the City. They are strong courageous people and deserve as many - if not more - kind messages.
A year ago today, written off by the press, we won the Stoke-on-Trent Central by-election. A victory thanks to our movement coming together offering a message of hope to the people of Stoke-on-Trent that they responded to. Can you help us win again?
Behind every great
#LabourGain
is a dedicated core of
@UKLabour
staff who work miracles and deliver stunning victories. A huge thank you to them all for everything.
By a majority of 2:1, Labour MPs reject EEA. Now hopefully we can put that to bed and move on with getting the right deal not a 20 year old Norwegian deal.
@DeborahDuffin
@darwent_charles
@trussliz
I do get it. The energy companies who sell to us as consumers are capped at a profit rate as part of the price cap.
But we should be taxing the excess profits of the producers to keep the cap down for consumers and businesses.
All I ask of
@jeremycorbyn
is for him to tell those who are taking his name in vein and decrying the legitimate concerns of antisemitism as ‘right-wing smears against the Leader’, that they don’t speak for him.
#EnoughisEnough
Really wish Stoke-on-Trent would stop being used as a metonym for some sort of regressive, low-skilled, irrational or inward looking bulk of voters opposed to any change.
It’s not fair and it is not true.
the apolitical part of me hates the way green policies are *always* seen through the lens of “will it lose us some votes in Stoke” rather than as an attempt to stop our great grandchildren having to live on rafts
The
#Tamworth
and
#MidBedfordshire
campaigns have been astonishing. Nothing short of first class and in part that is because of the sheer dedication and professionalism of
@UKLabour
staff who go above and beyond. A huge thank you to all and special shout out to
@WMLabour
.
@jogideon
Hi Jo. I'm sure you know the difference but you've used a picture of the Stoke 6th Form College celebrating money for Stoke-on-Trent College. They are different institutions, separate from one another.
Credit must also be given to the wonderful young people who have stood up for their futures and to the 100s of college, 6th from and school staff who, I know, worked above and beyond last week and over the weekend to help their learners.
If it was concern for young people, it would not have taken 4 days of news cycles, a series of really bad Sunday Paper front pages and growing unrest on the Tory backbenchers before a change was made. For 48 hours, ministers insisted everything was fair...
Vote for me on Thursday, 12 December for a fairer deal for rail passengers:
✂️ Season tickets cut by 1/3
🚄 Free rail travel for children aged 16 and under
💼 Fairer fares for part time workers
Labour is

I know
@Keir_Starmer
had worked hard to bring a policy forward that would give credibility to both LEAVE and REMAIN communities which is why his unilateral declaration today is disappointing. While members rejoice, we must not forget the voters we need to win over.
The service by
@AvantiWestCoast
has been nothing but disaster after disaster since they won the franchise.
Time to strip them of the contract and nationalise rail services.
As a party we are so much better than this. There should be no place for people in The Labour Party who peddle such abhorrent views. Our NEC must take a stronger line and expel those who are racist or anti-semitic.
📢Excellent news Stoke-on-Trent is receiving £1,083,577 to support children and families most in need this winter.
🍏The Covid Winter Grant Scheme will help with food and bills and provides a much more comprehensive, localised and targeted support:
Worth checking how many times Heidi has actually voted with Labour to oppose her Party’s policy which caused the austerity which she hopes to expose in this ‘lid blowing’ tour.
I sincerely believe the Government simply doesn’t know the level of digital exclusion that exists in some parts of the U.K.
Simply saying ‘switch to remote learning’ doesn’t address access to laptops, the internet or at home ICT literacy to support that learning.
@craneparty1901
@Keir_Starmer
He was the shadow Brexit Secretary who kept pushing for a greater remain / second referendum position inside Shadow Cabinet. As it happens
@jeremycorbyn
was much more open to our concerns and willing to listen.
If accurate, this would be a gross act of cultural vandalism by the Stoke Conservatives.
Stoke’s future has to be routed in our past and these attractions are a unique tourist offering to a city that has so much history to be proud of.
Child is watching ‘Paw Patrol’ where a group of highly trained dogs singularly deliver a range of public and municipal services with the aid of technology. Can’t decide if it’s an outlandish cartoon or a Tory dystopian future model of delivery of services.
I have tabled with colleagues, for tomorrow, a motion to compel the Government to negotiate a new UK-EU customs union after we leave the EU.
This text is identical to the successful amendment to the Trade Bill that Labour secures in the House of Lords.
That was a thoroughly depressing insight into the future of this Government and, frankly, the people from Stoke-on-Trent who gave up their evening to be in the audience deserved so much better.
#BBCOurNextPM
Had this lovely email today from someone who wants to reverse the referendum via a People’s Vote.
Basic arguement is tell my constituents they’re thick and prejudiced and ask them to read the Guardian instead.
I’m not sure that’s a campaign plan that will work...
Lovely morning on
#labourdoorstep
for the national campaign day.
Real concern about the cost of living crisis which is made worse in Stoke-on-Trent by big budget cuts and a council tax rise by the Conservative-run council.
A massive thank you to Stoke-on-Trent Central Constituency Labour Party, the Cooperative Party and all of our fantastic affiliate organisations for unanimously re-selecting me as the
@UKLabour
and
@CoopParty
candidate for Stoke-on-Trent Central!
The arrogance and stupidity of the comments by Lord
@Andrew_Adonis
is beyond belief. To suggest Labour doesn’t want the votes of Leave voters is not only electorally bonkers but highlights the total disregard some championing a People’s Vote show for (1/2)
Weirdest thing about today was hearing
@Keir_Starmer
and Labour MPs justify Labour’s decision not to whip in favour of a second referendum because
@peoplesvote_uk
said it was the wrong time. When did we outsource our Brexit policy to a third party campaign group?
He’s bottled it.
The only reason you delay what should be a May election is because you are scared of the public and know you’ve lost their trust.
Time for an election now.
"My working assumption is that we'll have an election in the second half of this year"
PM Rishi Sunak appears to rule out a May general election, adding he's got "lots to get on with"
Or you could watch the first episode of The Great British Bake Off.
Either way you’ll get half-baked goods, some fairly catastrophic outcomes and a lesson that preparing ahead and doing the simple stuff well is quite important.
The work of our constituency & parliamentary staff has never been more important in providing support for constituents. Today I have organised a letter to Ruth Evans, Chair of IPSA, against the below inflation pay increase they've been offered, signed by 200 fellow MPs.
Levelling up shouldn’t be about making systemically underfunded towns and cities compete against one another for slightly bigger slices of the pie. If a project is good enough to be funded, just fund it.
🌳 Since I was first elected, I've been working with local residents of Eaton Park to try and save Berryhill Fields.
This beautiful area is under threat from the Tory Council & the Tory Government.
🗳️ A vote for Gareth Snell on 12 December is a vote to save Berryhill Fields.
Dear Conservative MPs praising Marcus Rashford, perhaps ask yourself why it is being left to a footballer and private companies to tackle child poverty and not, you know, your own Government and the state. Just a thought...
I know this will be a sad decision for many of the
#1950sWomen
affected by the government's state pension changes. We will keep on campaigning alongside these women until we rectify this injustice.
