I actually read about this recently, but the reason the non native English writers have more unique styles is because their brains are still wired to their first language, allowing them to make syntactic and semantic connections native English speakers don't even think about
each language has its own writing style and the common cliches, tropes etc something that looks like an interesting allegory for an English reader could be a casual way to refer to something in another language, something the author uses daily and subconsciously
this is also a reason why non native English speakers can become critical of their work, as it might not fit with the traditional literature written in that language
but by having foreign writers come in and write in our languages, we can meaningfully enrich our linguistic worlds
still so funny to me that the casting director looked at ahn hyoseop and thought "yeah he should play the guy who is commonly known for being plain looking and constantly gets called ugly in the story"
for everyone asking for a source and where to read more... I personally got this idea from my manual on intercultural communication, written by my university's professors and only available to the students. it's also in Russian. here are the paragraphs talking about this issue:
list of linguists and other academics whose works you might find interesting if you want to learn more about concepts and intercultural communication:
Askoldov S. , Bahtin M. , Wierzbicka A. , Vorkachev S. , Gumilev L. , Mikhailov A. , Rastier F. and many many others I can't fit
every time I see merch of yjh that looks like this I go "eugh. he's such a stereotypical protagonist coolguy." and then I remember that this is the exact emotion he's supposed to evoke and I shake my fist at the sky screaming han sooyoung's name
google does a decent job at translating academic texts so here's a paragraph from the last screenshot I added above, this is directly related to the idea I mentioned, as summarised by the bright minds of professors working at my university
@mikeslubs
tautology issues are also taught in Russian! it's very much advised here not to use the character's name too many times
reading english translations of of Chinese/Korean works made me so confused about them using the characters' names ALL THE TIME but that's the norm!
and on the finishing note, I do really want to talk about linguistics with others but the notifications from this thread are getting overwhelming so I'll be muting it! I will drop by from time to time to read your thoughts and engage in more meaningful conversations!
many linguists have pondered this topic for a while. do we have language because we're intelligent enough? or maybe we're intelligent because we have language? what came first - coherent thought or a word? or are these concepts intertwined? read this book too btw
commenting on the common misconceptions people have regarding this post:
no, I am not talking about translation of any kind. the process of speaking in a foreign language is close but it isn't translation per se. translation is a separate, difficult process that is its own beast
learning a language through academia is necessary to be able to write prose in a foreign language. that's also undeniable and I'm not saying that prose written by novice authors who make mistakes that hinder the understanding of the text are inventing interesting new styles.
all while maintaining readability of your text is hard.but sometimes it comes naturally, because language exists on a deep subconscious level we're not aware of. that's the point of my post, the fact that we don't realise how deep the language framework is ingrained in our brains
this is relevant to native speakers too. if you've never taken an English course you're bound to make mistakes. it's not always a big deal in amateur writing, but again, not the topic of this conversation.
writing creatively, while inserting the ideas from your native language >>
language determines our inherent way of thinking, it's basically an OS for your brain. learning a new language is like installing a new OS, a new way of looking at the world. but it doesn't mean that your old way of thinking disappeared, they coexist in your brain!
@TheGreatestDarn
not just fanfics
idk if you've ever read classical prose written by a bilingual author, but that's genuinely a very unique and interesting experience
@lesh_ik
@mhhj1010
he's plain! he's not ugly that's true, people called him ugly because of the face filtering that's correct
he's not a hidden beauty tho and that's nowhere in the text. he's supposed to be just some guy to highlight just how regular of a person he is. it's plot relevant.
@Jomeimei421
I personally choose ships based on how funny they are and the themes and somehow labru hits both
it's absolutely hilarious to imagine those two in situations but also it's just a ship of two dudes who are foils to each other so
@caffeinatedmint
I think it's even more hilarious since... didn't rem just.. find them? laying around? did she witness the exact moment they were born? cause if not I imagine she just picked a twin at random and said "you're the older one" and nai took it for granted lmao
@sweepswoop_
imo a perfect labru slow burn romcom involves kabru monologuing like he's kira from death note and eventually coming up with the wildest conjectures as well as putting himself into obviously romantic situations with laios but it's definitely not romantic (see 3 paragraphs above)
@saturnonvenus
well personally I'm fine with all of the women here
I'd kiss the ground Nana walked on and I'd do the same thing for jhw. jisoo is apparently a good actress, I haven't seen her stuff in full but I've been on kdrama twt for a while
@ikutaang
I think that's just because Chinese is Like That
jokes aside, Chinese can fit a ton of meaning in small sentences, their prose language is heavily reliant on referencing classical literature, Chinese is very imaginative and metaphor heavy (from my experience, I don't speak it)
@Jomeimei421
this makes me sick because some time ago I tried to introduce my mother to orv and I began it by saying "kdj a stereotypical cynical type of protagonist at first but the more you read the novel the more you see of the real him, you just have to give him a chance..."
this level of insanity cannot be faked so I begrudgingly have to admit that a man who talks and thinks like this is real and exists somewhere out there, a thought that leaves me feeling conflicted
@caffeinatedmint
nai: it's embarrassing for vash to care so much about that wretched human woman
also nai: is convinced he's the older twin cause rem told him
in tristamp she even called them angels and he also went like "hmm yeah maybe I am an angel"
@tinkswonu
I still think it's jun because of that one time when he said he wants to scare the members himself 🤔 and the gose staff did warn them to watch what they're saying!
@seraph_takehood
I'm also a language teacher! :D hello colleague!
in my case it's hard to convince the kids that the language isn't just about speaking it, it's about learning a new way to interact with the world and with themselves
even persephone noticing he couldn't take his eyes off of her?! him closing his eyes when persephone took her form? and kdj's "It was just fortunate that she wasn't wearing a Chinese dress" when persephone turned into yjh? what does he mean by "fortunately* ?
@cvnide
I think they'd start talking mad shit about each other's novels but after like 10 hours of reddit level discourse they'll find the common ground (which is loving their protagonists so much they would die for them)
@CallMeTade
kind of a weird take, considering a huge chunk of English wordstock is from Latin and has the same roots as the many romance languages (Indo European language group)
@anjuphobic
yes he's not ugly. he's plain looking because he's literally just a guy and that's his role in the narrative, to be just any guy. yes the face filter exists but it's not hiding unspeakable beauty. nowhere in the text it's confirmed he's beautiful/handsome or anything, I'm sorry
@tls123_twt
genuinely think this right here is the craziest bit of foreshadowing they've pulled so far, I legit had to pause for a second here and go "no way they did that."
@Jomeimei421
I always wondered how that works... she still needs to give them her memory, right? doesn't it mean that it's still "her" but like... different skin?
those two avatars... are they laughing with her. or at her....
um anyway just posted my first english fic for the orv fandom and it's 21k words long 🥹 I am clinically insane
please go check it out if you like orv and please go read orv if you haven't 🏳️🌈

na pd asking if they dont get nervous on stage, ww said varies,dk still gets nervous before a stage,jeonghan gets nervous on small stage rather than big cuz the audience is closer
👤wbu?
🐈⬛i dont get nervous like that, also i dont wear lens on stage either so i cant rly see it
😭
@mhhj1010
well said! but it wasn't the point of your original tweet that I disagreed with.
I personally wasn't even bashing on the casting, I just made a silly little joke about it, I'm all for waiting and seeing the final result of the movie
everyone was making fun of people who ship chosoyuki and here comes gege by basically confirming that choso is yuki's type
the biggest W any crack ship has ever gotten
@Jomeimei421
is this the tweet that finally makes me watch tenet. a tweet where the user jomeimei compares the relationship between the main characters to joongdok.
@Jomeimei421
I literally can't stop giggling, every time I look at those silly little covers and uriel's expression I just lose it
I firmly believe that she is also an author of those doujins
"I was in a heated moment with my three fictional men" и "I was determined to make mine something I would kill for if absolutely necessary " УБИЛО
@Jomeimei421
the contrast is AMAZING
yma: I want waffles for breakfast
yjh: no, you had them yesterday
yma: ... please, orabeoni...
yjh: ........ fine
kdj in the distance: hey, joonghyuk-ah!
yjh: no.
kdj: I didn't even say anything
yjh: NO.
Happy Birthday, Shikanoin Heizou!
*yawn* Ah, there you are!
Sorry, I was thinking of reading while waiting for you and I accidentally fell asleep.

as someone who has written a research paper recently, my point could've been explained in a few short sentences but I needed to provide examples AND hit the required symbol minimum... academia is based on the premise of yapping, I think
i need to go to bed before i start talking about anything crazy like how sexual desire is often sublimated into hunger and all i'm saying is that would laios fuck the winged lion well you look at this and tell me you aren't suspicious that's all i'm sayin—[GUNSHOT]
@zaismth
yeah but that's just how illustrations be like
again, he's not ugly, I'm not saying that. realistically speaking, he's normal and regular looking
@Jomeimei421
doesn't yoo mia canonically use a different address for yjh when she wants something from him
yjh is well familiar with the tactic ahahsjsh
@maskofbun
this is so real, I calculate my age by subtracting the age difference from my sister's age, two things that I for some reason remember better than my own age
@ghoulbrainz
if it's the achievement I'm thinking of, you get the achievement for accepting bhaal as soon as you make the choice and you can literally just savescum it
I got it unintentionally when just checking the "other options" and to see companion reactions
@svtsmusic
@pledis_17
I really hope it's home tho 🤔
hit has a very high energy choreo with interesting stuff and fear is very poetic but I just adore home's storytelling and elegance
it's rare to see something like this in kpop imo
