Makes the Black Sea, which in my mind's eye is far far east, seem quite European (you can see how the Genoese had bases there). Makes North Africa and Asia Minor look much more part of a European world. Makes Sicily look central, not peripheral.

This fun working paper suggests that mandatory child car-seat laws nudge parents into having 2 kids rather than 3. The seats saved 57 lives in 2017, the paper argues, but 'caused' 8,000 fewer births.

I have a job offer from a big pharma company. I love academic research, but the pay is not adequate for living in a place like Oxford. I am 30 and still having to live in a houseshare. This puts many of us in difficult situations. I hope @UniofOxford are thinking about this.

There are some weird political self-owns in England's student funding system: 1. Gov in practice subsidises low-paid, high-social-value degrees (like social work or nursing), because grads eventually have their loans written off. Yet they claim - and receive - no credit for it.

It's the UK National Plan, published exactly 55 years ago! The chapter about regional imbalances could have been written last week - but for one thing. The rich, productive bits of the country back then weren't "the South" but "the South and Midlands". What's up with that? (1)
