self-immolation, like a riot, is an experience of exhaustion & beyond judgement—it isn’t a tactic or strategy to be evaluated in the same way a tornado isn’t We don’t judge a tornado but we do study the development of pressure which lead to it’s emergence

French unions called for a general strike today. And the people responded. Over 200 demos were held in the country, with upwards of 3.5 million on strike across the country. In Paris alone unions estimate that 800,000 people turned out. 🧵

Part of what is broken in the humanities is that we see it as *negative* that 90% of PhDs go out into the world beyond the academy to contribute game-changing insights. These innovators are not ‘failures’ of the system; they are, by far, its most valuable contribution to society.

Benjamin reminds us of the power of mourning, of summoning our dead: the oppressed class appears “as the avenger that completes the task of liberation in the name of generations of the downtrodden.”

Republicans in North Dakota have killed a bill to provide free school lunch to kids in low-income families. “I can understand kids going hungry, but is that really the problem of the school district? Is that the problem of the state of North Dakota?" said Sen. Mike Wobbema.

i bet it takes an elephant dose of ambien to help you HR scumbags sleep at night "continues to raise issues that involve others outside their union" why don't you tell us what those issues are? oh you don't want to? bc @UMich is covering up a prof's sexual abuse

U-M negotiators focus on coming to tentative agreements for the GEO contract, while GEO continues to raise issues that involve others outside their union and cannot be bargained for by GEO.

It’s painful, but not surprising, to watch union bureaucracy crush all the power & enthusiasm of a strike & turn a confident historic effort into a negotiation where the barg team bargained against itself, suckered into a good faith the employer will never live up to

solidarity isn't transactional, it doesn't exist w/i a world of debits & credits; you can't go to a vending machine & make a rational choice to purchase solidarity; you can't go to Netflix & queue up some solidarity; I don't give you solidarity bc I owe it to you

reading a poem a student said is the “worst thing they’ve ever written” & it includes the incredible passage “Me and Gregg been smoking redge & mowing hedge since 5th Grade at St Bernadette’s” Ppl’re so used to thinkin writing in their voice is against the rules but it’s gold

there is no such thing as community-based policing bc the police exist to break all forms of community & solidarity Safety for whom? Vallas wants to increase the police force as an active occupation force in everyday Chicago life

i'm not abstentionist i jus think that if you engage the democratic party the beginning point is always affirming socialism, not how much of socialism do i need to hide so they let me in & i can build a coalition that does not have a socialist heart or arc

Super embarrassing to shill for @UMich so they can continue to exploit @geo3550 grad workers & pay poverty wages when they have $17,000,000,000–that’s 17 billion dollars—jus sitting there You ppl should be ashamed of yourselves & what you do for a living

Grad workers are a waste product the body of the university extracts revenue & production for as cheap as possible & shits us out when it has done w us, w no concern for our situation except if it can still squeeze out a lil more value out of us as post docs or ntt

The system was broken when 20% of PhDs got jobs. It was broken when 30% did. No percentage will be too low because it ultimately doesn't matter to institutions what happens to their grad students after they finish. They have served most of their purpose already.

actually *not* a great thing bet if we looked at the demo of these ppl who applied to Duke, one of the most elite universities in the world, it'd be largely composed of 1) PhD legacies 2) the economically privileged 3) ppl who have a iron clad idea of their purpose in undergrad

My jaws keep dropping as I go through 70 PhD applicant files. People w/ 2 coauthored papers & an interesting solo writing sample don’t even make it to the top 10 in my pile. The level of knowledge, research experience & passion these kids bring to the table is just remarkable! 🤩
