things were different a bit over decade ago. gif "search engines" (really, gif repositories) in their modern form didn't exist. gifs were actual .gif files you could just right-click and "save as", so new ones spread naturally and people had personal collections.

Prior to the launch event, Apple gave a few third-party devs early access to the SDK, to see what they could make in a few weeks. One of those devs was SEGA (or possibly a subcontractor of SEGA), who decided to port Super Monkey ball from the Nintendo DS:

i was sleep deprived when watching the announcement but now that i look back at it the Apple Vision Pro feels like a fucking fever dream. Apple wanted to make an AR headset, not a VR headset. the difference is you remain aware of your surroundings while using it. normal so far

I was 12 or 13 when all this was happening. In early 2009 I was was lucky enough to be able to buy an iPod touch (2nd generation), and of course, Super Monkey Ball was one of the first things I downloaded. It was fantastic! The music on the first levels stuck with me especially.

“c is portable assembly” hasn't been true since optimising compilers appeared for it. it's an accurate description for those really simple (usually old) c compilers on the other hand… where for(;;) and while(1) are different and local variables aren't free. old c is so cute

wanted to post on the VirtualBox forums and apparently that requires an Oracle account, so I go to make one and… lmao, you _have_ to specify your job title, company name and address, and work phone number. this is the most Oracle thing.

one of those amazing things about Apple is that occasionally Steve Jobs would come up on stage and be all like “I am hot shit, we are going to turn this industry upside-down with a product years better than anything else out there, fuck you” and sometimes he was absolutely right
