Thanks to everyone who built Victorian Socialists and voted for us. We got highest vote of any minor party today - this is unbelievable for socialism in Australia. We ahead atm for the 5th spot but dodgy preference deals could yet steal the win from us. 69% vote still be counted.
(1/3) I'm not going to second guess the State medical authorities decision to lock down 11 high rise public housing towers today.
However if shared elavators and laundries are reason enough to lock down a tower, what about private multi-unit high rise developments?
The Victorian Socialist vote of 18927 in Northern Metropolitan Region was highest in Oz history for a socialist in a single seat.
We will receive $90,000 in electoral funding plus more from our Broady vote.
We have only just begun
RIP Moss Cass who died yesterday, 95 years old.
Leftwing Whitlam gov minister, created the environmental impact statement, made community radio possible, pushed Medicare forward, started 'Earthworker' (worker-green alliance), Member for Maribynong, North Carlton resident.
The Australia Day announcement is about a Prime Minister trying to whip up racism and nationalism to get votes. It's a desperate act by a desperate leader.
Ps I'm on ABC TV news tonight on this

Got news: owners told last year they’d need permit to convert and they backed off. Now they seem to be trying again without permit. Yarra eforcement officers visiting them 4pm today. Will keep you informed
(3/3) Services and food support are a start for tenants. But it's time guaranteed internet access and suitable devices were added to the government response.
Over next years of disease containment, communication infrastructure will be revealed as critical public good
(2/3) We must ensure we don't create a 21st ghetto policed by cops.
The towers are jam packed full of massive families living off desperately thin resources as it is.
We need organised food drops-offs; social workers 24/7; and an end to this as soon as it's safe to do so.
This Tuesday night I'll be asking Yarra Council to start a trial of allowing interested residents to run EV charging cables like these (at their expense). It's already being trialled in the UK and Port Phillip Council in Melbourne
We have a Collingwood street named after mass murderer Oliver Cromwell so let’s have a street named after the only Australian honoured in the US National Civil Rights Museum - the great Peter Norman
At long last Yarra Council spending big on cycle infrastructure - $900,000 in tonight’s budget for extension of Wellington St dedicated lane up to Johnston St plus new dedicated lane in Elizabeth St, Richmond linking up with Albert St, East Melbourne
I'm being contacted by lots of frightened and angry public housing tenants in my area.
We need more explanation about this from our local State member and Public Housing Minister, Richard Wynne.
What extra resources will tenants get? Surely it's not just police.
The State government is distributing 50 free masks per resident on Yarra's 12
public housing towers and walk-up buildings.
This is approximately 250,000 masks.
It's an effective public health initiative, almost Cuban-style, and is a direct result of resident pressure.
Idea that more apartments will ipso facto lead to cheaper housing flies in face of reality. Affordable housing needs government to expand public housing plus developers being made to incorporate a percentage of low cost housing in every development. Can't be left to market forces
I just told Council that Alphington locals today wrote to Local Gov Minister and the local MP asking to be taken out of Yarra and into Darebin. They say they're not getting value for their rates or being listened to re issues like parking.
The CEO agreed to meet committee reps.
Thanks to community uproar, the anti-democratic provisions of Yarra's Code of Conduct were taken out at the Council meeting tonight. Well done everyone!
Devastating news that Jane Garrett has passed away.
When she was Yarra Mayor she was the driving force for the transformation of Victoria Park into the amazing place it is today for our community.
Thanks to Noam Chomsky for his overnight endorsement of Victorian Socialists.
“The appearance of Victorian Socialists is one of the encouraging developments that offer some hope for overcoming the severe crises that loom before us.”
Fiona Patten re-elected in Northern Metro taking 5th spot.
ALP got 2 places; Greens & Libs 1 each.
Congrats to winners.
Victorian Socialists received 3771 more votes than Reason but superior preferences meant they caught up.
Thanks to our volunteers and voters. VS is here stay!
VEC countback for Yarra Counci position vacated by resigning Green won by....soocialist candidate Bridget O’Brien!
This is huge.
2 socialist Cllrs at Yarra now.
Yarra Council votes 6-3 for Bin Taxes ignoring massive community outrage. This will bite these 6 Councillors on the backside at next years election.
6: Cllrs Landes, Mohamud, Stone, Crossland, Wade and Nguyen
3: Cllrs O'Brien, Glynatsis and me
(1/2) At last night's Yarra Council meeting, Mayor Nguyen voted for Cllr Bridgid O'Brien's motion to use Federal housing funding to reopen the project for new social housing in Collingwood.
Unfortunately the Greens & their allies voted the plan down, just as they did 2 years ago.
Yarra Council passed condolence motiion re tragic death of Eurydice Dixon.
She was brought up with her brother and father in public housing in Yarra.
Her dad Jeremy was an occupier during the Richmond SC battle in the 1990s and a current campaigner for more public housing
I encourage everyone to attend this Tuesday's Yarra Council meeting (7pm Richmond Town Hall) where the gag policy is to be voted on, followed by an attempt to limit resident's ability to stand up to dodgy development (details to follow)
Some locals want newly resurfaced Clifton Hill running track named after this legend. Do you agree?
Peter Norman to be recognised for role in 1968 Black Power salute via

I'm hearing the Liberals will shut down Yarra Council and merge it with City of Melbourne if they win the State election.
Bigger Councils mean even less accountability to the public.
The position of Dep Mayor comes with a $60k+ allowance. Normal Councillors at Vic Councils get between $30-40k gross.
Last year Yarra's Deputy Mayor chaired only one meeting. Getting an extra $25k for this is obscene. The Minister should stop insisting Councils have this position
I’ve had a few complaints that Council is thinking of spending $30k on Black Lives Matter.
Same complainants say jack shit about the same budget spending an extra $230k on private consultants - an 8.1% rise to over $3m.
I think the reason is racism
Great to see the night clubs back in operation in Fitzroy - so why does Yarra Council continue to have their meetings online?
Maximum barriers between Councillors making unpopular decisions and a dissatisfied public seems to be the logic.
Bring back Town Hall democracy!
(1/2) Massive win for struggling hospitality venues and their staff last night.
Yarra Council was forced into a humiliating retreat and scraped the parklet fees in order to be allowed to access the new $54m parklet assistance from the government.
Yarra Council to start live broadcasting of Council meetings from November.
It's good for accountability but I don't think Netflix will need to stress too much
If you live in the far north of my Ward (Clifton Hill, South Fairfield or Alphington), please vote 1 Victorian Socialists and then preference the least bad of the rest.
Kath, and a united Left as expressed in VS, represent the politics of the future
10 yrs ago Aboriginal people and socialists held rallies to oppose the then new Local Law 8 to ban public drinking on Yarra streets.
On Tuesday Council votes for officers to only have to THINK you have alcohol for them to fine you.
Attend and oppose, 7pm Richmond Town Hall
Why is "Australia's most progressive Council" using ratepayers money to employ private security for the Council meeting on Tuesday?
Locals are not violent neo-Nazis, they simply oppose Bin Taxes and want to use their (truncated) rights to speak at the meeting.
Very very bad look.
I’m in the Age today and on Channel 9 news tonight about the failure of the market to provide homes for ordinary people and the need for a revolution in housing policy
So the lesson for Australia from Macron’s retreat is clear: protesting, striking, and generally carrying on like a pork chop is much more effective than letters to the editor, voting Green or ALP, praying etc etc
Glenn Druery admits his shananigans got Reason's Fiona Patten elected into the Upper House 4 years ago. I got 6000 more first preference votes than her but she enjoyed way better preference flows and overtook me for the 5th spot in Northern Metro.
Mark Latham has lived off taxpayers all this pathetic life:
'Everybody hates a welfare rorter': Latham spruiks DNA testing plan for Aboriginal people via
@smh
Just interviewed for Ch 10’s The Project on how weak or non-existent planning laws facilitate a ‘Dictatorship of the Developers’ in Aussie cities.
For example bedrooms built with no natural light (banned in New York) and new high rises built without a single low cost housing unit
(2/2) Talking about low cost housing the Greens love to do, but in the one part of Australia they actually control they have twice now said "no thanks".
This project be revisited after the Council election next year, that you can put your house on.
My daughter got heated off her Melbourne construction site at 8.30am this morning because the temperature hit the magic 35 degrees.
Thanks to the CFMEU she still gets 8 hours pay.

Metro mismanage our trains while making millions in profit - tonight they trying to shake down Yarra Council with a 240%+ price rise to allow a much needed bike path connection near Rushall Station.
No to privatisation, Yes to publicly-owned public transport
#gansterswithoutguns
Yarra passes budget to jack up rates, defer millions of dollars of important capital works and increase fees and charges by over the rate of inflation, including childcare, respite care and more. Not very helpful for locals dealing with a depression.
I voted against.
I voted with a majority of other Yarra Councillors to question the extortionate quotes from Metro Trains re Rushall Reserve bike lane. Let’s power ahead with this much needed infrastructure
If Labor announces Melbourne Metro 2, it should go through a new and much needed North Fitzroy station on Alexander Pde and then onto Victoria Park. This will make Doncaster Rail link possible
Yarra is officially in revolt.
Locals have called an unauthorised people's Council meeting on the steps of Richmond Town this Friday 5pm. Hope to see you there.
Thanks to the meat workers union (AMIEU) for their $1000 donation to Victorian Socialists and to the Lebanese Communist Party (Melbourne branch) for their $300.
We are a broad church of the Left :)
88% counted in N. Metro, we on 19,000 votes (highest vote for a socialist in Oz) - 4th behind ALP, Greens & Libs and ahead of other 15 parties. Preferences mean one will jump us for last spot.
With 19,000 votes & machine of 100s of young people, Victorian Socialists here to stay.
Btw I've had to change my Twitter bio to adhere to the new Yarra Council code of conduct.
I wish they policed election promises as hard as they do this stuff.
