Exciting opportunity! I am hiring a postdoc to join the group and to develop computational methods for the analysis of biomedical data including imaging and genomics data at a single-cell or spatial resolution 🧬
I'm excited to share that I've been promoted to Associate Professor of Biostatistics

🎉
Thank you to all of my mentors, lab members, colleagues, collabs, friends & most importantly family who are my greatest supporters

I need some laughter after today.
What’s a word your children (or niece/nephew/etc) mispronounced when they were younger that you found adorable and hilarious?
I’ll go first.
Kiddo: “Mommy are you going to Giant Pumpkins (i.e. Johns Hopkins) today?”
Me: “...Yes, yes I am” 😂
❤️ This award means more than I could ever say! I am inspired by so many of my colleagues & peers. Very humbled to be selected. One of my *favorite* things about my job is teaching.
I’m excited to keep pushing the boundary of research in

I am thrilled that

Don't get me wrong,
#MachineLearning
can be an incredibly useful tool.
However, it can also be flawed and is not the solution to everything.
It still takes my breath away when I hear individuals put so much complete trust & confidence in it as an end-all solution.

I am truly excited to announce a new award launched in 2023 called the JASA
#Reproducibility
Award, which aims to recognize outstanding papers in the Journal of the American Statistical Association (JASA) in terms of computational reproducibility!

Excited to announce that I'm now an Associate Editor for Reproducibility at the Journal of the American Statistical Association 👩💻

💡For like... I don't know, years, every time I wanted to _pull_ out a column from a data frame, I would do this
mtcars %>% .$mpg
Today I discovered this awesome function in dplyr
mtcars %>% pull(mpg)

I'm absolutely stunned this article made it past an editor's desk.
I'll just RT a comment from the reviews:

We are celebrating women in statistics and data science! Read these women's biographies and find out why they chose statistics, who influenced them, and what they have accomplished.

True story: 10 mins before my

virtual pres, kids woke up from nap
One immediately pooped & dumped milk on floor. Other jumped off bed, crying hurt his knee.
Partner ran after one, I ran after the other. I jumped back Zoom call JIT to present

I’m giving a talk later this month to high school students. If you majored in math / stats / etc, can you leave a comment 👇 w/
- your major?
- your current job title / position?
- if it’s OK for me highlight you in a pres?
I want to give ex of diverse things to do w/ math!
I respectfully disagree.
1. With 2 kids under 5 (who are **still** not vax eligible), there are huge costs to my family by attending maskless conferences.
2. As an EC faculty, there are also huge costs to my scientific career by not attending.
Mask reqs give me a path forward.
@lpachter
I am going to be unpopular. Rapid tests, yes, frequently and required. Masks, no. People's smiles and faces are so nice! and I have so enjoyed a few maskless conferences. We are vaccinated, there is Paxlovid, getting Covid is not pleasant (from experience) but not deadly

So. much. this. I know my partner & I are in a privileged pos to work from home w/ our kids, but wow that was a rough day 1.
I think part of the prob is the guilt that comes from not fully engaging as a parent, nor fully engaging in my job. No one is happy & mommy is exhausted.
Celebrated this week my 6-year work anniversary at
@JohnsHopkins
! 🎉
I reflected on lots of changes and growth professionally, but also personally. But one thing I know for sure is that I feel so fortunate to work with the best people!
me: “hey kiddo where does mommy work?”
kiddo: “giant pumpkins!”
me: “and what does mommy do?”
kiddo: “you teach statistics!”
Yep, I think my school at home training is a total success 🙃
#parenting
Get your kids vaccinated. Or severe illness & death. Also, no one <5 can get vax yet. Quarantine w/ young kids at home. But also work full-time w/ no childcare. For 2+ yrs. No tablets, or you are a terrible parent. Also, you didn't publish as much as him, so you're not qualified.
Stay indoors. But also return in person. Wear a mask. Not that one. The expensive one, that you can’t find. Take rapid tests. Which you also can’t find. But if you find them, don’t buy them. Rapid tests don’t work. You need PCR. There are zero appointments in your area.
Very excited to be co-teaching my first undergrad course

Remote and/or hybrid options are sometimes the *only* option for some folks, especially folks with young kids.
As

kiddo: "mommy, what's a muppet?"
me: "a muppet is a monster puppet. it starts with the mmmmm sound."

But can we also respect my choice to wear a mask while presenting?

It is always a good day when we get to announce the recipients of the Catalyst and Discovery awards at
@JohnsHopkins
Every year, we invest millions of dollars to support early-career faculty (Catalyst) and collaborative research (Discovery).
I planned to be en route to

right now, but plans changed late Friday due to some complications at home.
While I'm sad to miss out on connecting with old and new friends, I love being able to record a talk so research can still be shared! 👏

Some days I think “I can do this! We can do this!”
Other days I feel like my entire world is falling apart & the chaos of everything is soul crushing.
Accepting that both days are completely normal right now has been one of the hardest (yet most helpful) things for me.
#covid19
Not sure who needs to hear this — I know this is a stressful time for many, but pls remember
- Panicking doesn’t help
- Be kind to yourself and others
- Take mental and physical breaks
For me that’s come in the form of planting seeds & watching them grow

A common mistake I see from someone writing a paper with both
1. code for a data analysis
2. a new software pkg
is to put it all into one directory / repository. Some 🤔 on why it's better to keep them separate:

This is order is inhumane and wrong on in *every way*!
Marginalizing, threatening, or outright banning our international researchers & colleagues will not only ruin the lives of individuals, but also will only hurt the innovation engine in academia and tech/industry for decades
This order is an unmitigated disaster for US academia and for the country. It will have a chilling effect on the ability of the US to attract the world's best scientists and engineers even if lifted by a new administration because of the uncertainty it creates.
