'This hilarious and nuanced show’s 10-minute episodes are landmark television. Its rare glimpse of queer love in small-town Scotland is devastatingly charming'
Goodness. Thank you to
@libby_brooks
for this wonderful article about Float + it's team.❤️
We celebrate women getting tiny and taking up less space. We celebrate dangerous food restriction as pious self control. We live for before and after photos. The roots of eating disorders are insidious and everywhere. Goodness, we need to be kinder to our bodies and each other.
I figured the world could do with a little bit of good news. So, here is ours from a couple of weeks ago…
She asked if I would marry her.
And I said yes!
This weekend I got my second unprompted 'love you' from my girlfriend's kid.
He is only little and he won't know the weight of the words but still, I've thought about that every day since it happened.
Menopause, miscarriage, fertility issues, painful periods, hard pregnancy's and traumatic births. There is a lot of blood around being a woman and very little is of it makes our screens in a realistic way.
Hire women to write women's stories.

If you're a young person who was planning on going to Uni in the hope of getting into play or screen writing. If the the government's fuck up means you've lost your place, I'd be happy to zoom you and offer some free mentoring / professional guidance. Just get in touch.
To all attending the Edinburgh Festival, remember mosh pit rules apply.
1. Don't forget to drink water.
2. Step out if it feels too much.
3. Keep friends in your eyeline.
4. If you see someone down, pick them back up.
5. Try to enjoy the chaos.
Have a good one! 🤟
I was doing the wee guys bed time last night.
Stories. Cuddles. All the lovely stuff.
Then as I was leaving the room he shouted, at the top of his voice - BYE BYE BIG BOOBIES. And fell asleep.
😬👍
I'm tucked up in bed and still can't believe it. I genuinely hadn't expected this. My legs were shaking as I stood up to get it. Thankful for all who made it possible, it was a team effort ❤️🏳️🌈🏊♀️
Being a writer is about 10% actual writing, 20% making cups of tea, 5% Skype meetings, 25% answering emails, 6% leading workshops, 11% staring off into the abyss, 62% making up percentages, 101% wasting time on twitter.
So, about last night... we won. We won! One of the biggest prizes in Europe for short series.
I'm still wrapping my heart & head around it. But important to say - Float was an absolute team effort. I'm grateful for every single human who helped make it. This is for all of us. ❤
Facebook told me that this day 7yrs ago I won the Olivier. I was still working a part time job for minium wage and I had to catch a flight to go and do a shift the following day. I only have one photo from that evening and it's of me trying to put the award in my mouth. Classic.
We're delighted to announce the names of the 11

and production companies for our TV Drama Writers' Programme 2020. This unique initiative partners each writer with a company with a script commission to develop the 1st ep of a potential BBC Drama
Sometimes I think about how many men in the theatre world escaped
#MeToo
unharmed. Men who have power, men who appear to be gentle. The stories I know aren't mine to tell, but how is that women can't be safe - not while doing their job in the creative industries or walking home.
Fuck me. It never gets old seeing a poster for your work.
And I'm sorry to go on about it but considering how tough points of this year have been, I'm embracing the moments of celebration and joy.
I've kept this basil plant alive for 5weeks, it's now a foot tall. Its funny you don't think you're ready for motherhood, but then it happens and it makes perfect sense.
Recently, I got told an amazing story about a young person who performed in my play Remote. As I understand it, being in that play was a quintessential part of their coming out. To the point that when they did, they changed their name to Antler - the lead character of that play.
'So, I know now is the time for listening but as a straight male playwright, I think I could write a really interesting and unique response to

A long time ago I wrote my dissertation on A Doll's House. Back then I had a loose idea for an adaptation. So, I was delighted when all these years later
@glasgow_hill
also got excited by the idea & said he'd help me develop it. Thanks for the support team Citz. Here we go! 💪🤟

I am amazed this explicit discrimation (within election content) is legal. At least others attempt to hide it. Someone more clued in than I suggested their core beliefs are contradictory to the Equalities Act 2010. So, I'm seeking further clarification from you
@LewishamCouncil
.
Well.
This is unexpected and entirely wonderful.
Nora is a finalist for the Susan Smith-Blackburn, which is a playwriting award for women who write in the English language.
I'll put some humble pie in the oven. Thanks for the nod.
💃🍷🤘
After weeks of looking at my own face during calls, I've realised there is a feature that removes your own camera from a zoom.
If you click the 3 dots in the top righthand corner, there is an option to 'Hide Self'.
As an act of public service I wanted to pass this news on.
'Like Caryl Churchill, Smith writes brilliantly about the anxiety that simmers behind the eyes ... Few write better than Smith about the internal world of women, the emotional hinterlands that we keep hidden'
Bloody hell, thanks
@lyngardner

6wks ago I dead lifted for the first ever time. I said by Christmas I wanted to deadlift my own weight which the internet says is good for 'novice females'.
Today I deadlifted 95kg aka 15 stone, which is more than me. And I feel like superwoman.
Black lives matter.
And
Trans-women are women.
I can't imagine how exhausting it must be to constantly repeat your own right exist and to exist in safety. But let us all say it again, until both statements are implicit to all.
Black lives matter.
And
Trans-women are women.
Tonight is the last live performance of Hench, ever. The show opened just as we were in first throes of our relationship. And much like the women who made it, that show changed and bettered my world. Here is to you
@jessicafostekew
😍
51% of the UK identify as female. So, shouldn't we aim for atleast 51% of a theatre season to be written/directed/designed by women? This is before any intersectionality is included. I mean if we can't represent our country on stage, it's no wonder it doesnt happen in Government
.
@SabrinaMahfouz
and
@stefsmith
are among the writers who have been commissioned to write five new plays, which will be free for young people to perform, as part of an initiative from theatre company
@wonder_fools
Recently, life has been throwing me some pretty major curve balls and the team behind Nora were a huge help and support. I am so very pleased this massive team effort is being recognised. 5 stars. 5 shiny door slamming stars. We did it.
It's gutting but entirely understandable that the Young Vic has decided to close Nora a week early.
Health before anything else.
Ill keep it brief but my love to all involved & deepest appreciation to the Citz, The Young Vic, the crew, creatives and cast. What a thing. 💛
The health and wellbeing of our audiences & staff will always be our priority. We have made the difficult decision to cancel all remaining performances of Nora. More info here:
The news is out! I'll be adapting
@amy_may
's stunning memoir The Outrun.
Directed by
@vicfeatherstone
and with an epic new score from Luke Sutherland. Thankful to all of them for being up for the adventure. Humbled, nervous, excited. See you in August 💙
It's the news we have all been waiting for...
Fun Home - is being streamed.
My flatmate
@jojo2511
has agreed we have to watch it once separately and in silence and then a second time where we can sing along.
I'm standing in the middle of times square, having the time of my life thanks to the Susan Smith Blackburn prize. I'm spun out on jetlag, joy, gratitude and the giddiness of meeting the other writers. I'm thinking of those I love and those that love me. Now, onwards.
From Sunday you'll be able to watch every episode of our short series - Float.
Made during a pandemic with an ace team of folk, many of whom were doing what they did for the first ever time (including me), we've shone a wee light on a story not often seen... here we go!
🏊🏻♀️🏳️🌈🏴
From tomorrow you'll be able to buy the published version of the Nora script
@youngvictheatre
. Ill be donating 20% of any profits I make from playtext sales to

@NickHernBooks
for their lovely publication.
Today a woman leaned out of her car window and said she liked that my hair matched my trainers. Then she gave me a leaflet for her gallery opening. Its like cat-calling but nice.
I was thinking about how problematic the Bukowski quote of 'find what you love and let it kill you' is to artists, especially young artists.
So my offer is - find what you love and let it give you a wee cuddle.
I used to do so many things in a day, now I can make a few emails and doing a wash last 12hours.
HOW am I going to fit life back into life?!
I've unraveled the loo-roll of time and it won't go back to the way it was.

I spent my evening having one-on-one chats with the
@royalcourt
writers group. And I tell ya, even if our politics are fucked, there are going to be some amazing plays on in the future. 🤘👍🔥
So much kind noise about Float - thank you. I'm so delighted to be writing queer stories set in rural Scotland and for it to be female fronted. Stepping away from twitter but will log back on later. I feel very humbled and happy.
I feel so lucky to have found someone who is tremendously kind, extraordinary clever, utterly beautiful and makes me laugh like no other. She is also an excellent kisser and can deadlift me in a heartbeat.
I'm on my first zoom that is both BSL interpreted and captioned. I am forever in admiration of
@Pwrightsstudio
and their endless desire to become more accessible. The team have compassion & humanity at the core of their organisation. A force of good in the world. Thank you PSS!🙌
I'm delighted that

These were my valentines day gift from Gilly. Ridiculous and excellent.
In the wise words of my Dad - I tried being grown up once, wouldn't recommend it.
I don't think I'll ever stop being excited about seeing Caryl's name next to mine! Delighted to be included in this anthology of work being translated into Polish.
My Mrs
@jessicafostekew
is doing a gig in the living room. I'm sitting the bedroom hearing hers and
@SarahMillican75
laugh. Just for a split second levity fills the house. It's glorious and I feel very lucky I get to hear Jess's laugh for as long as she'll let me.
Leeds Playhouse is quietly one of the most inclusive theatres in the country. For example what other theatres have BSL interpreters at their press nights? And have a pioneering dementia friendly programme? Plus, free tix to refugees & asylum seekers! Go team

I've nipped in to say hello to the Nora team
@youngvictheatre
. Including the cast and creatives there are 29 people buzzing about making it happen. I feel like I want to hug every one of them.
This girl from the Trossachs is grinning with glee and feeling a tad overwhelmed.
You just don't think it will happen to you. You don't think you're that type of woman. You think you're invincible. You think that surely luck and willpower will see you through this.
And then BANG! It happens.
You join a netball team.
"90% of my plays come from a feeling that I can’t articulate, and the playwriting is the action of trying to articulate that feeling."

Due to all these canceled trains, I've had a tiny cry. A bag of chips. A glass of wine. I've lost my bank card. And ended up in Newcastle.
So. Basically. I am on a one woman hen do.
So, as promised this morning I made a donation to
@samaritans
&
@womensaid
. I donated 1/3 of my advance from the publication of Nora. Utter respect to
@NickHernBooks
who said they'd match it, all to ensure women like Nora, can have the chance at a brighter future. 💚
'We are able to help writers from outside of London with their travel costs'
VERY few playwriting groups offer travel expenses but the
@royalcourt
do. Being part of a group (and subsequently leading them) changed my life.
Please consider applying!
Applications are now open for our Introduction to Playwriting Groups.
The groups are an opportunity for writers with little or no experience and lots of raw talent to think more deeply about writing for theatre alongside a group of their peers.
Just want to say thank you for the response to the news of Nora getting it's transfer. I was rather overwhelmed by all your support, it's twitter at it's best. But for now, this writer is going back to sitting quietly at her desk, drinking tea and writing down her imaginary pals.
I bet this will be ace but allow me a low grumble at the missed opportunity to give a queer female couple a play and space that isn't specifically / just about their queerness.
New show alert. I've written an adaptation of Antigone that will be directed by comrade and collaborator
@orlaoloughlin1
. I am excited about this one! Opens next spring in a city called London, which I believe is just south of Edinburgh. 💪🔥🖤
Finally
@orlaoloughlin1
directs a new 21st-century re-imagining of Sophocles’ Antigone, telling the story of a city in turmoil as political & familial power struggles wreak tragedy upon tragedy. A world premiere written by Olivier Award winner

The amount of topless men on this train is... intense. Imagine the privilege just to be like - bit hot on this train actually, think I'll pop my top off.
The Tories have a track record of voting against LGBTQ+ rights.
I've got a government that doesn't want me to exist.
So, I'm going to switch off my phone. Turn over and hold my girlfriend.
Because the best and only thing I can think of to do, is to keep existing. And we will.
The tweets from folk saying that all these political events are going to make a great James Graham are funny and true. And I am sure it will be excellent.
But with all due respect, I am gonna ring debbie tucker-green and see what she makes of all this...
One last script to submit but I'm mostly clocking off.
In 2019, I think nearly every aspect of my life changed.
The main lesson I learnt is how lucky I am to have so many extraordinary people in my life. Thank you.
Here is to a less eventful 2020.... 🤞❤
There are going to be a lot of people (mostly gay women) who are going to have very confusing complicated feelings towards Margaret Thatcher if this actually happens...
