Shout out to Jessica,
@EasternHealthNL
emerg triage nurse yesterday at HS. She asked my pronouns and preferred name without a prompt. There were pride flags up everywhere, and staffs’actions through our 6 hours there backed up their commitment to the queer and trans community.
Personal post: my hardworking, creative, social justice oriented, thrifty, and kind daughter has won a $65 000 scholarship for Western university.

Thank you to her exceptional teachers along the way, especially Mona Hepditch.
NL peeps. New Mexican restaurant in Goobies! An adorable couple moved their entire lives right across the country in the hopes of a better life. Fingers crossed for them 🇲🇽
Especially great timing due to some transphobic stuff that is floating around right now. You know you’re on the right path in life when you get a random drop-off gift from an acquaintance who saw this mug at winners and thought of you. 🌈🏳️⚧️
Kudos to
@NLTeachersAssoc
and
@kindergartenken
for this piece that got right to the heart of the matter. Queer kids need to be able to imagine first and foremost that it’s possible to grow up as their authentic, happy selves. All teachers foster this,out queer teachers embody it.
@GiwedinAnangKwe
Non binary parent here: I have three kids, and all of them are cisgender and straight. I had hoped but they are dashed 😂 I guess I just don’t have powers.
Here are some tips for how teachers and schools actually can and do support gender diverse students.
@GSDSIC
@SISNLESD
Many of these can also help trans and gender diverse school staff feel supported.
Thank you to the
@NLTeachersAssoc
for your continued support. I hope that in some small way this recognition will help highlight the importance of supporting and uplifting 2SLGBTQ+ students and staff.
Congratulations to Émile
@sopkowe
on being named a Human Rights Champion at today's
@NLhumanrights
Awards ceremony! Your continued dedication to 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion and the creation of safe, inclusive spaces for your students and their families is changing and saving lives.

This has been making the rounds. I vividly remember seeing a queer couple in Dollarama shortly after I came out. They were doing mundane errands, but it reminded me that I knew what I wanted, and that it was indeed possible.
I’m honoured to be included on this list of NL human rights award change makers. Something is going right in the world for

PC leader Poilievre is wading into the idea of banning gender affirming care for any under the age of 18. This matches moves by many PC premiers, and is not far off the human rights violations happening in Florida. Voting PC endorses hate rhetoric, return your ally card. 🌈
Happy IWD to all the amazing women in our community. A gentle reminder that we don’t need to add “and those who identify as women.” If they identify as women, they are women.
@GSDSIC
Our Pleasure is now offering gender affirming products; chest binders can be tried on in stores and their consultants are available to assist with any questions regarding sizing. Metro locations currently provide the following items:
Chest Binders, Packers,
Gaffs, Breast Forms.
I pushed myself out of my comfort zone today and it was amazing! So great to see so many queer folks and allies in one space🌈 It was also eye opening to realize how little I could hear when people were wearing masks, or when I wasn’t able to anticipate what they would say.
Sneak peak of the beginnings of a new mural at HCE that is simultaneously beautifying our walls and paying a local artist out of funds from our school GSA. Art is work.

Every morning I have an image up for homeroom. Often they are silly, sometimes political or serious. For Feb, the focus will be on BLM themes. One of the kids nailed it this morning“She’s looking for a doll that looks like her.”

In the age of gatherings of grown adults working together to take away the rights of children, just be kind messaging isn’t enough. You can be perfectly kind to an individual and simultaneously take actions and help create and support systems that oppress them.
During outdoor play with grade 5, we took a stick and did a contactless pickup of lost masks on the playground, so they don’t end up in the ocean to potentially harm wildlife.
When I taught gr. 6 in Holyrood, two of my students wrote to town council as part of a writing assignment. Their request for more pride symbols in the town was treated with respect by council. I emailed them a picture and they were so proud and pumped about this
@HolyCrossElem
I finally decided it would never be exactly the right time, so I had a friend help me drop off legal name change forms today. Perfectly suited for
#TransAwarenessWeek
Admin/teachers: reminder to create space for sharing pronouns, including staff meetings. Ts have pronouns, too. Then we aren’t operating on the assumption that everyone is cisgender and that we can tell someone’s pronouns by looking at them

If you aren’t aware of the “Don’t say gay” bill that has passed in Florida, please read. This impacts our queer kids here. All homophobia hurts the community, regardless of where it happens. The impact on LGBTQ youth and teachers is huge.
@GSDSIC
Today in GSA we talked about how many students had ever read a book with queer content. About 1/4 raised their hand. Then we asked if a teacher had ever read a book with queer content out loud in class. Not a single student put up their hand. Schools: can we all plan a pride day?
MQW GSA has almost reached their fundraising goal to pay a local artist to paint a pride themed mural. There are a couple rainbow toques left, if you would like to make a donation in exchange for a toque.
@Grade5Woolgar
I’ve seen you sporting yours a few times!
@MQWSchool
Sharing some read alouds for Pride month. Here is one for approx. grades 3-6, which tells the story in rhyming verse of a family preparing to go to a pride parade, and how Pride exists thanks to the spirit of the first pride event, the raid of the Stonewall Inn.
Today in grade 6: I’m trying to share what is beautiful about Ukrainian culture, not just bleak news. We passed around these (wooden) pysanky that my family has always had kicking around the house, talked about folk music and listened to a tune the kids said is “a real banger”😂
Today, national coming out day. For 2SLGBTQ + educators and students, you don’t come out once and then it’s done. It happens over and over in different contexts throughout your life. And there can be a time and a place for staying safe and not sharing that part of your identity.
One of things things we don’t hear enough about is the privilege it requires to be able to transition. All the little things add up to$. I’ve had only 1 of my 3 degrees changed. My undergrad degree alone would cost $120. This one can go up on my wall, others now live in a box.
If you are an ally to the 2SLGBTQ+ community, please consider contacting
@NLAthletics
and ask that, even if runners still would need to run as male or female, that they add non-binary as a gender option for the Tely10

A bit late.. our 2023 class hooked rug project
@MQWSchool
“Rainbow Duck”. Designed and hooked by the grade 6 ICF class. I have a hooked rug from many of the classes I have taught (not all, sadly), signed by every student.
Just found these anonymous questions from GSA from a previous school year. THIS is why schools create this safe space, when these are the kinds of things that our students need help navigating

Something I said really stuck with her all evening. She apologized for asking me to educate her and explained that she had an awakening that, actually it’s her to do better, not on me. Healthcare folks: all of these things are making a huge difference. More of this, please!🌈🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️
Can anyone put me in touch with the right person
@SchoolLunchAssn
?I’m hoping to discuss listing teachers by grade, first initial and last name, not Ms. or Mr. If we don’t make space for
non-binary people in education, our students don’t see themselves there in their future 🏳️⚧️

Bragging personal moment: when the kid is a hard working volunteer with an exceptional mind and plays in multiple ensembles. We have fine young people in this province. Congrats Annie Lewis!
@NLESDCA
Thanks to Holy Heart teachers for supporting her💜
I know by doing the work I do that I (sadly) inevitably will get some hate. If it makes life easier for queer kids, so be it.
This is what a red flag 🚩 for homophobic and transphobic can look like … um, no I won’t “go off”, but I will erase your homophobic comments.
Happy to share this news from Trans NL”We're pleased to announce that our Trans Youth Group is BACK after a short hiatus. Em Sopkowe (they/them) is taking over the role as youth group facilitator, and we are
absolutely delighted to welcome them!”

I have to weight in on this one, as someone who no longer has to depend on subbing to feed my family. It is letting our subs down. Many are considering leaving the profession because of smartfind. We need them. When we don’t have subs, everyone loses out, including kids.
Today we made our own advent calendar of kindness. Students worked with a partner to write a random act of kindness for the 14 school days in December.

I dropped in for a few minutes to see my students yesterday, and they had made my this, along with cards and even a “prof Em” bracelet in trans flag colours. My heart.
We were so thankful to have Beth join us today to teach our grade 6 GSA students about indigenous culture, and start a queer beading project with us.

In Moncton for gender confirming surgery, and I want to gently address something. Friends have reassured my nerves with “at least this is something you chose to do.” While said with love, there is an inherent tinge of transphobia in this. The same would not be said to a person..
Given a choice to write on any topic for formal letter writing, one Elementary student chose to call on their town to do better more for 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion 🏳️🌈.

Pride read aloud: King and King. An elementary level fairy tale about a young Prince who has a family on a mission to find him a princess. Spoiler: they don’t catch his eye. A fairy tale with a twist (super joyful, no negative undertones), fabulous images
With Pride month coming up, let’s make sure our actions in schools are meaningful and go beyond just displaying a symbol, without the 365 day a year ally ship that we should be demonstrating to our students.
@ErinInTheMorn
And amongst the low number of real people who detransition, the reason can be complicated, including social pressure, financial constraints, employment barriers, etc.
Unhoused people
Camped out outside government needing homes,catastrophic wars, grown adults taking away rights of queer kids.
If you are tapped out and need to tune out for a bit (I often take breaks!), let’s remind ourselves that being able to disengage is a privilege
