How does one “make” their kid non-binary? Like how would I, as a parent, actually accomplish that? If I actually had the power to “indoctrinate” my kids I’d start with getting them to do their laundry or start the dishwasher without being told. Have you ever parented a teen? 🤦🏽♀️
Orange Shirt Day should not be a called or turned into a “celebration”. It is our Remembrance Day. We honour and observe. This day represents many lost children and widespread intergenerational trauma. Its a time to learn and reflect.
#EveryChildMatters
I have a 13 yo non-binary child who I love fiercely. I kept them home today because I didn’t want them to see which of their classmates have been pulled from school by their parents for this protest. Their identity was never a problem until the past year’s surge in hate. 💔
In response to 1 Million March 4 Children protests that are scheduled to take place across Canada, ETFO strongly condemns anti-2SLGBTQ+ protests.
Any actions or events that seek to undermine the rights and dignity of the 2SLGBTQ+ community must be denounced.

As we approach Orange Shirt Day this year, here is a 5-day school-wide shared reading plan around Rita Joe’s renowned poem “I lost my talk” that you can use for Reconciliation Week, honouring Residential School survivors and those who never made it home.
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew says materials needed to search the Prairie Green Landfill will begin to move this month.
Kinew met this afternoon with families whose loved ones' remains are believed to be in the landfill north of Winnipeg.
This has been tearing at my heart for a few days now. Buffy has lived her life as an Indigenous woman, and as such, has experienced all of the “lived experience” that goes along with it- the good and the painful. What is gained by targeting her at this age? My heart hurts. 💔/1
It’s back to school week, which is a great time to remind teachers that Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT), although convenient, is not audited through an equity lens, and many non-Indigenous created materials I’ve found are actually harmful. 1/ 🧵 🪡
I’ve been creating French and English integrated lessons based on the Ontario curriculum around thought-provoking picture books, written by Indigenous authors. Here is the folder in my Google Drive. Feel free to share and give feedback! Miigwetch!
People should understand that when Indigenous people share their culture with you, it is a huge risk. Once our culture is shared with you, we lose control over what you do with it. The sharing is an honour that means we trust you will care for what is shared. 🧡🪶
50% of the kids in care in Canada are Indigenous. They only make up about 8% of the child population.
Currently, 91% of the kids in care in Manitoba are Indigenous.
There are more Indigenous kids in care at this moment in Canada than in residential schools at their height.
Maybe the sixties scoop doesn’t get talked about as much as residential schools because Canada doesn’t want anyone else to realize they never stopped taking our children. Maybe they want everyone to believe that the genocide ended in 1996.
I’ve started creating French and English lessons for our board around Indigenous texts. We are Water Protectors (Nous sommes protecteurs d’eau) is a rich content, high interest, low vocab visual text that can act as a springboard for meaningful student inquiry on water inequity.
Change of plans for 2022-2023!
I am so grateful to announce that I have accepted a one-year teaching secondment to the Faculty of Education at
@WesternU
starting in September. I will be teaching Indigenous Ed. to B.Ed. students while I start my own Doctoral studies this fall!
Controversial opinion incoming- I’ve now taught elementary, secondary, college and university. Hardest BY FAR….elementary!
Have you seen the herculean task that is setting up an elementary classroom out of one’s own pocket? I don’t miss being broke this time of year lol 😂 /1
@SassyMetisChick
Sweet kid. 💔
My kids have come to me with similar things happening to their online friends. It’s too bad he didn’t have an approachable parent he could have gone to first to help him navigate the situation.

What an ill informed take haha.
After 30 yrs, there is a reason I never got my Primary qualifications. Kindergarten is absolutely the grade level that scares me the most. The people who teach FDK are the real MVPs.. 🙌🏽
Inexperienced teachers should start in kindergarten where it's 'less demanding': Que. education minister! Such a BS attitude by elected officials who know nothing of the demands.

Nobody should be able to sell Every Child Matters lessons on Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT) as a side hustle. Anyone who buys these lessons is supporting those who profit off the collective grief and trauma of Indigenous people.

Teacher friends- Here's an awesome animated series of short 2 minute videos explaining the Seven Grandfather Teachings, told through traditional storytelling by Elder Dave Courchene, produced by Turtle Lodge. Watch, learn and share with your colleagues!
Traditionally in our communities; 2Spirits were sought for their wisdom bc they saw issues from all sides and knew that the “truth is in the middle”.
W/ today’s polarization of right/left, we need our traditional 2Spirits more than ever.
The answer is always in the middle.

Spent 28 years in K-8 teaching and retired in April. My last day was spent sitting alone in my office at Western. Just found out the board had a banquet this week to honour all retirees and I was neither made aware nor invited. For all that I did, how does it end like that? 💔
@elonmusk
Watched the whole thing. She answered the question. She talked about fixing the supply chain issue and lowering cost of child care and preschool- all edited out.
You remember the other guy suggested drinking bleach to cure COVID right? 🤷🏽♀️
I don’t usually do this kinda thing, but was just thinking about how much I was teased/bullied for my Indigenous features as a kid and even as an adult.
Now as a community Auntie I want to set an example for our girls to love themselves and all their beautiful Indigeneity. 💫🧡

The best materials I’ve seen are produced by Indigenous organizations and have been through vetting for sensitivity/ accuracy. Every school board in Ontario has an Indigenous lead who also leads curriculum development which is also vetted. Resources are NEVER sold for profit! /3
@notcapnamerica
This is actually very sweet and hitting hard tonight on a personal level. 🥹 You can tell she was coming from a place of care and concern.
I get the importance of outing legitimate pretendians, but in some cases our relentless pursuit of them ends up adding more trauma to the already traumatized.
Where do we go from here?
I’d like you to consider from our perspective how it feels to see non-Indigenous educators producing Every Child Matters/residential school-related materials for personal profit on TPT. You are profiting from our collective trauma. Literally. /2
Just received my confirmation that, after 22 years (+6 years with
@TDSB
before that), my last day of employment with
@TVDSB
is Friday March 31. My last day of K-12 teaching- 28 years is a long long time (and many many hairstyle changes!) Weird how fast time moves…
I can only think of my three girls who will forever be questioned about their identity because their own parents were scooped and they themselves also ended up in care, never knowing their community. They’ll spend the rest of their lives never being white or Indigenous enough. /2
@heymrsbond
She has not successfully built any type of relationship. The words coming out of her mouth sound scripted, and the kids pick up on this. It’s dehumanizing to be honest. Talk to them without the canned phrases. 2/3

Justice circle. If they did that to my kid, I would want to sit around a table with them, their parents and school officials. Then have the kid explain why they said what they said. Accountability is facing your victim and owning up to what you did. Suspensions do nothing.
@notcapnamerica
Devil’s advocate here… I feel like this child is likely neurodivergent and cannot handle the big loud parties, too many people, overstimulation, then having his face shoved in a cake. He didn’t punch because he is mean, he’s probably in fight or flight. My daughter is autistic
I’m blown away! Yesterday I did an Indigenous dance lesson at

Indigenous Veterans Day is November 8. First Nations men were not considered “Canadian” so they could not be conscripted. Many volunteered anyways to defend the treaties and also because they knew their land/survival skills were needed.
According to the
#2021Census
, Indigenous people represented 5.2% of the 444,520 Canadians who reported having previously served in the Canadian Armed Forces.
Thank you for your service!

Three words can diffuse 99% of these power struggles- “Are you OK?” Then follow that up with “Are you hungry?” “Did you not sleep well last night?” “What can I do to help?” I never make their behaviour about me. In turn, students learn trust, and begin to reciprocate that care
Fellow citizens of London and surrounding areas, may we take all that outrage about changed anthem lyrics and put it into demanding clean, safe water coming out of the house taps in Munsee, Chippewa and Oneida Nations. 🙌🏽

I stand by my words. Selling Every Child Matters materials for personal profit is exploiting our trauma to make money. No different than companies selling Every Child Matters merch for profit. This is indefensible to me. I will always hold teachers to this standard.
In jingle you spend a lot of time on your toes, which is a lot of work! This might be surprising to hear but I am hands-down more sore the day after dancing jingle than a day after a marathon. Calves were screaming at me this morning, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything! 🪶🧡

What I see is that she is struggling unsuccessfully for ‘control’ of the class, and when students come from oppression, being “controlled” is triggering and traumatizing. 1/3
Wanna know something crazy? It’s next to impossible to adopt a First Nations child out of extended society foster care. These are kids who have no chance of ever going home. Even when they are in a loving First Nations home, these children will be stuck in care til adults… /1
Gr 8 boy just approached me privately after my presentation to thank me for teaching him about Indigenous history/culture as he is Indigenous on both sides of his family and knows nothing about it.

Winter2024, for the first time, we will be offering First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples: Understanding traditional teachings, histories, current issues, and cultures- Pt 1 AQ.
Deadline to register-Jan. 22.
Ask me for details!

Good To Know- This is a medicine pouch. We wear these as protection and inside we put medicines, often advised by our Elders. The pouch is worn close to the heart. If you see someone wearing one, please make sure not to touch it as it is someone’s personal bundle and sacred. 1/2
I JUST GOT ACCEPTED TO RUN THE 2024 TOKYO MARATHON!
This is my 6th and final world major to earn my 6 Star medal- something only around 11,000 people worldwide have earned.
I was the girl who cried in gym class in elementary school- I couldn’t even run 100m.

You can frame it as an “area of growth”- for example I would say for me “an area of ongoing growth for me is assessment- always learning more about equitable assessment practices, assessment as, for and of learning, ways to efficiently provide regular meaningful feedback.”
