So much talk today of the Govt “buying care home beds” Like they are heading off to DFS or Bensons to purchase their stock. Journalists repeat this dehumanising language.
It’s about our families, friends, neighbours & what happens to them

We’re considering a “Committee” on the future of social care. Inverting usual power relationships, the committee members & witnesses wld primarily be pple w lived experience. Based on our gatherings to date we think the issues & debates would be quite different - what do u think?

Learning from other movements for social change around the world, we've developed a new plan to build a 'movement for gloriously ordinary lives', which we've already begun to put into action. You can find out more about it here:

We are thinking it might be time for a proper
@socfuture
gathering in the spirit of our launch - focussed on possibility, action & partnership oriented, building on progress but with a plan to step up a level. Would you come?
Most policy & expert debates in social care start from the wrong place. The first questions should be what do people want & what should they be able to expect. Excluding people’s voices from commissions, conferences etc effectively excludes vision.

Soon many will emerge from lockdown. But the reality of our social care system is that it creates a semi permanent lockdown for thousands. Models of “service” are based on life & limb care. But the pandemic has shown us all that connections & purpose are what gives life meaning

When people with lived experience of social care, (not often enough) are invited to speak or participate in conferences, commissions etc. they find payment is rarely raised by the people asking. The askers need to think about this. Pple shouldn’t themselves have to raise fees

In a country where about 800k people draw on some form of “adult social care” we respectfully suggest that conference organisers might go the extra mile by finding some of them to speak at & attend events. In 2022 we shouldn’t be saying “I couldn’t find anyone to speak”

.
This is why, as a starting point, we have endorsed
#socialcarefuture
's vision. We believe it should form the basis of future reform.
Governments can do this time and again because they don’t fear any public challenge. There’s no public challenge because social care sector “strategy” hasn’t created the conditions for one. It’s time to change the weather

Short term we must give all the support we can to people living and working in care homes. They deserve all our help. After the virus it’s time for big change - All the indicators are they are moving in the wrong direction 1/4

Whose social care is it anyway? Most reports & decisions about social care get written & made about people with lived experience rather than by or with them 1/7
It’s quite shocking that in discussions w orgs that trumpet their commitment to coproduction they fall at the first hurdle - making free places available to pple w lived experience at their events. It’s 2021 take the pledge or don’t pretend you are an ally
We think
@BristolCouncil
proposed 'fair & affordable care' policy is unlawful & wrong. It will mean some people having no option but to move into institutional care against their will. The council must think again. Read our submission to the consultation
