Today my 15 year old voice student and I cried together, as I told her she likely has to go to a doctor to get her vocal folds looked at, because she didn’t recover from her “summer flu” infection in June (it was covid)
I don’t think some people over 40 understand how fed up millennials & gen z truly are. There is no future for us. We have been used as political bargaining chips our entire lives while getting nothing in return. There is historical precedent to where this will eventually lead.
Everything is way too expensive. We all work constantly, often multiple jobs. We have no savings accounts, pensions, or plans for retirement (lol). Many of us still rent at exorbitant prices. The planet is desperately trying to warn us to stop this lifestyle. And yet, here we are
@SteamboatUSA
What I don’t understand is why people look to ghost doctors when they could go to a massage therapist and probably feel way better without the risk of blood clots or severing nerves or whatever other fun things happen
Millions of us have unpayable student loans we took under explicit pressure from older generations. They quite literally helped scam us & set us up for wealth extraction for LIFE for something they OFTEN GOT FOR FREE, and wonder why we are so pissed. We are debt slaves to the gov
The teenagers see it. They know it’s hopeless too. They’re miserable in the k-12 factory style schools we have required they be at. We put people to work in kindergarten & tell them play/the arts/music isn’t a worthy economic pursuit, because $$ is all that matters. Just bleak.
I am 31, for reference. I think this applies to many under 50 as well, but most of my peer group is under 40 obv so my brain went there first. So many older ppl genuinely think this system is good actually, and it’s so hard to hear bc I feel like everyone my age is so over it
It’s going to be really sad in 5 years when a bunch of musicians who thought they were doing good things for their career long term by performing during Covid can’t perform anymore bc they got Covid too many times
I must admit, seeing “concerts” described as unnecessary consumerism is difficult bc once again I’d like to ask the ?, what should musicians do? Are we advocating for the end of live music? I agree there needs to be accessible ways to share in music that aren’t crowded stadiums…
Idk I’m not a doctor, “just” a voice teacher, but I’ve seen major changes in general vocal & student health lately. My entire job is listening to the nuance of laryngeal vibration and… many are still so inflamed :(
Who has still not eaten indoors at a restaurant since the before times? 🙋🏼♀️ trying to feel less weird as I do miss the ease and casualness of soaking up different vibes 😩
We’ve reached the stage where enough kids/gen z have long covid & parents are concerned, so now the gaslighting is to tell the kids that they’re actually fine when they’re sick constantly & say things to their teachers like “I don’t know what it’s like to be NOT sick anymore”
Out of the shower — obviously this is a p surface level thread too that peaks into the housing & education crises, but I didn’t even mention the healthcare crisis, the carceral state, & how Covid is still ripping through marginalized populations, further destabilizing them weee
Also, it should be named that the root of all of this, as always, is white supremacist racial capitalism. The forced scarcity and rugged individualism cannot work without dividing us all from one another. Solidarity forever. Adding now bc I was at work, as mentioned lol
@eligaultney
@kellylynnedang
The contempt people like you have for creatives is palpable. You really genuinely don’t understand the intrinsic value to art because all you see is commodification & profit. It’s a disease.
Lady at my pottery class says “I’m so glad everyone wears a mask here bc my husband is at home really sick with Covid!” She is masked and said she tested but this is why we can’t have nice things
@katedodd3
@helenmcollins2
That is very clearly not working and also the system is purposefully set up in a binary to build the veneer of choice, when it’s really blue oligarch vs red oligarch
I get that the air is invisible but like, I don’t get the disconnect on why everyone can agree on clean water but clean air is like a woo woo concept? As if there aren’t particles & gasses floating around, let alone pathogens? Like, climate change is coming for the air too
I had my mask on to pick up my burrito and this old suburb white lady did the most obnoxious double take and kept turning back to look at me as she was walking forward. I said “you got something to say?” and she looked again and I just yelled “ITS AIRBORNE”
@Acer3752
@JoshuaPotash
And basically a guarantee to Covid and burnout. So many of us are walking around qualified & just need to get re-certified, but NOPED out of k-12 bc the compensation vs work/life balance is a joke
If you think the movement for clean air begins & ends at Covid, boy have I got bad news for you about climate change. Some of you really aren’t ready for the wildfire smoke & re-emerging pathogens. Or, related, the clean water wars. This isn’t just about Covid. Get on board.
Gen X getting mad at me bc I forgot about them even tho I changed it to 50 later in the thread 😬This is what I get for weed tweeting. Either way, this oligarchic gerontocracy sucks so let’s dismantle it. Why is everyone in congress old as hell? Oh right they have all the $$$
“Kids are such Petri dishes! It’s normal for kids & everyone around them to be sick all the time! That’s just the way it is! omglol”
Wild concept: what if we made it so that’s not “normal”? What if kids don’t have to be constantly sick, as if it’s some fucked up rite of passage?
Why don’t more people talk about what the Covid lockdowns did to young people like me?
At 15 years old, I was involuntarily isolated from my friends for SIX MONTHS. I didn’t see them, I didn’t meet them.
The lockdowns RUINED young people like me. An entire Generation.
What gets me the most, is that many people aren’t even thinking about it. The possibility of getting c0v1d doesn’t even cross their minds, as they sing next to 30 others onstage, as they bounce from one restaurant to another, as they take in the joys so many had to give up…
It’s very interesting to me how people can grasp how air filters/purifiers work but as soon as you put filter material on the wind hole you breathe in & out of, suddenly they are mystified
Yes, I’ve had Covid once despite masking outside of my household since the beginning of this (June 2022, partner got it first and gave it to me). This isn’t proof that masks “don’t work”. This is proof that the risk is so high that even with strict precautions, it’s not 100%
Would love assistance from a “it’s just a cold” person during my voice lessons with distraught teenage students who think their voices might be gone forever bc they have been severely affected by a recent Covid infection (which delayed a musical & caused dysphonia in TWO leads)
It’s already happening. I am incensed. So many students with sustained dysphonia. Audiences can’t even mask but scream at us to perform. It’s been one of the most painful stretches of my life, tbh. I never thought this would be music.
We’re not going to have functioning musicians left at this rate and, honestly, if we don’t acting like their health and lives matter, we might not really deserve them.
Look what just came in the mail and happens to match the pink top im wearing currently
I’m no expert but my glasses aren’t fogging even with a vigorous exhale and it’s p cute
@Air99_LLC
I can’t believe I used to do the cat litter & deep clean stuff without a respirator. I can’t believe there are people still doing these things without one!!!!
Hey opera/theater are we tired of this yet or what
Masked rehearsals, air filtration at all times, tested performances, masked audiences. This isn’t hard. The industry simply doesn’t care to protect performers. We know this. Why trust them with our health during a pandemic?
Theatregoers have expressed outrage after a performance of West End show Hamilton was cancelled after just 30 minutes - because no replacement was available to take the place of a lead character who fell ill.
Officially at the “I will sacrifice whatever clout I have in connections to academia to go scorched earth on the powers that let this happen”. I am done pretending Covid is an untouchable topic and that we all just have to navigate in our own special way.
Imagine if there was a poison gas moving across the country, that if you breathe in, you could die. As this cloud moves, it ends up being the 4th leading cause of death. It now covers the whole land. Wouldn’t we want to stop this poison gas cloud? Isn’t that unacceptable death?
My partner thinks he shouldn’t have to bring the CR box to gigs if the wastewater is low & I’m so over him citing me being controlling or whatever when I ask him to bring it anyway. Case numbers is not the metric we are using for this. Music venues are just high risk.
So few white people will speak out and step the fuck up & I’m sick of being treated like a vibe killer every time I try to.
You’re all right when you say white ppl are the problem — they don’t even want to TALK ABOUT IT. I was just told I was “obsessed w/ feeling this way”
So in my mask journey I started w/ cloth, moved to colorful (probably kinda shitty) KN95, & now all I’ll wear is the 3M aura. Thinking of finally upgrading to a FloMask bc of how expensive it is to keep buying boxes of 20 auras + using a new one each time, so it’s like $40/month
Repeating my own “respirators definitely work” anecdote — 50 person choir, 40/50 maskless. I wore a 3M aura + Nozin. Ventilation to the outside (tall church tho). Covid superspreader of 28. Index case singing maskless in the pew directly behind me. I did not get infected.
It’s usually ok to send your child to school with a mild illness.
If you’re not sure, take a look at the
@NHSuk
guidance on a range of common childhood illnesses such as coughs and colds, to help you decide.
Find out more:
Anecdotes aren’t science, but I’d like to reshare my experience with a choral superspreader of 28 people back in May 2022, as it provides pretty solid experience that a good mask works. The church we rehearsed in was purposefully updated w/ ventilation to the outside.
This one is the most ridiculous to me bc if I can sing opera and convey the text & story wearing an N95, you can talk to your patient 5 feet away from you. I promise you they can hear you. Still masking teachers manage to do this daily in classrooms too.
“I can’t mask because I need to communicate with patients” is a thing I’ve seen other doctors say. It’s supposed to make you think they are caring. It’s the caring version of “Covid is a cold, I’m not going to mask”.
I honestly wish this was satire but I can’t even write this stuff anymore. He starts talking at 1:36.
This is textbook dysphonia, likely covid. This sound indicates his vocal folds are not adducting well. While talking about how Covid isn’t surging is a problem. W/ Covid voice
What gets me is so many people have personal experience being burned by the one exception they made. That one dinner out. That one night at the bar. We all know someone. Even Osterholm got it from a 15 sec elevator ride. Why do so many believe they’re exempt from bad luck?
I don’t really want to wade into this too intensely, but my biggest anecdote on one way masking is that a duckbill N95 protected me during a choral superspreader that infected 25/50 people (all maskless). The first two +’s, likely source, were singing in the pew right behind me.
Posted this in my Facebook political group and predictably, many centrist liberals are popping up and defending themselves for not masking bc they “did their part” and the “cdc are the experts and they say it’s ok”
Genuinely WHERE are the rapid tests calibrated to the biggest circulating strains? Like are they still being made on the original alpha strain? I’m no scientist but a middle schooler doing a science fair project can see that this is not how test strips are supposed to work
It feels like some people really believe that Covid can’t spread among friends in a friendly gathering. Like, oh, I know them! And like them! And they don’t seem sick! … ok that still doesn’t change the fact that they could have covid lol
LIZ WHERE ARE THE RESPIRATORS & AIR EXCHANGES IN MEDICAL FACILITIES PLEASE? Why do I have to send a message to my primary care providers every time I go in to get them to please practice airborne infection control? Should I remind them to wash their hands after they poop too?
Over a million Americans have died due to COVID-19—including many family members & loved ones. We must honor & remember the lives lost.
@SenMarkey
& I are pushing to designate today—the first Monday in March—as COVID-19 Victims Memorial Day. Congress should pass this resolution.
“Not super worried”, says the man who made sure his kids’ school actually upgraded their ventilation whereas the rest of Massachusetts schools barely have windows & air conditioning (my high school was built by a prison architect)
Largely agree with Tulio. At this point, not super worried about EG.5
We will get new variants. They will cause increases in infections
The answer is the same
Keep up w vaccines
Get treated if infected
Use masks and tests if you wish
And don’t worry about every new variant
So trolls, have I got this right
If I wear a respirator at work bc I am actively sanding, soldering, & drilling, that’s a great idea, makes sense, and PPE is ofc important
If I wear a respirator at work bc I don’t want to get covid, I am suddenly “insane”/“crazy”/etc?
😐🙄
Not just you! People’s vocal health is deteriorating. COVID seems to increase people’s allergies & acid reflux severity, which irritates the voice anyway. Pair that w/ lung damage, laryngeal nerve damage, & endothelium inflammation & edema on the vocal folds & this is the result
Is it just me or do some people just sound like they have a permanent cold? I’m not even sure if it’s just their voice or some damage to their vocal cords and nasal passages from all the colds and sickness they’ve collected. 💀
I think many people’s refusal to mask as a default is bc they believe they are a good healthy person™️ who can detect immediately when they are unwell & contagious bc I KNOW MY BODY so it feels like an attack on this part of their core identity. Too bad that’s not how this works!
I gotta be honest, I literally do not have friends at this point. Other than my family or my partner’s family, I have not “hung out” with anyone since I moved back to Massachusetts. I met up with someone to go see a musical masked. But hang outs? Haven’t happened in years
Bc I just went grocery shopping and got open mouth coughed near TWICE. That would never ever be you though, right? You wear a mask as a radical act of community care & do your part to make essential public places accessible to disabled & immunocompromised people… right???
Getting real old listening to everyone complain about their spring colds that take forever to recover from with absolutely zero awareness or curiosity as to why this might be happening
I really hate this “it won’t work on a population level” argument when you’re trying to convince an individual, who is part of the population, to mask & they won’t. You’re part of the problem. You’re the reason it “won’t work”. It’s so weird how people separate themselves from it
@mpnewhouse
@astradisastra
@NemesisOfPower
Because it’s literally all made up and the money went directly to the universities under our names and it’s been spent & gone for literally years yet they change the terms willy nilly whenever
So you’ll all finally admit that concerts are superspreaders & have tons of people w/ active covid attending, but only in defense of your favs huh? Why is it okay to spread a voice snatching, disabling, & k1lling virus in a music space? Why must we risk death to participate?
@jomaticaaa
@PopBase
like??? it’s a concert in a stadium with 50k+ other people, she was not the only one in attendance with covid yet shes the only one who’s distanced enough from the crowd to not spread it
I want to scream into the void so fucking hard that I disappear into a black hole and come out in another dimension where this level of death isn’t normalized & justified so fucking casually by fellow “progressives”
Just because you’re at the “tail end” of “not covid” doesn’t mean you don’t need to wear a mask while you’re actively coughing, sneezing, and throat clearing.
My concert is today! Man I wish
@3M
would make a black aura for those working musicians who would like lung protection in a high risk workplace (choirs are often superspreaders) but also would like it to match with concert black
What stage of fascism is “cops guarding libraries”? Could the symbolism here be any more literal???
Literally guarding knowledge while saying there’s no money for the access to the knowledge like come on
Went to the (Brooklyn) library today. Bunch of people were there trying to get in. Two cops were being paid to guard the door and say "Library is closed due to budget cuts" to everyone
It’s so frustrating feeling like you’re on a completely different plane of reality than everyone else you have to interact with daily. I got asked “are you partying this weekend?” last week and I just kind of stammered like… no, obviously.
I like how challenging liberals on not masking anymore and saying they’re downplaying a mass disabling event causes them to react by saying we are “trashing” or “guilting” then? You’d think they’d make the connection as to whyyy they feel that way hmm…
Masks work because air filters work. Condoms work because barriers work. Filters and barriers work bc physics. It’s so painfully obvious the lack of critical thinking/cognitive dissonance people choose instead noticing the same logic in another example of a similar technology
Social media influencer doing “everything they can” to not get sick:
Picture of immunity boost smoothie
Dude get me the fuck out of this timeline I am so over everyone
I can’t even watch YouTube or listen to a podcast without the creators TALKING ABOUT HOW THEY GOT COVID AGAIN
HAVE YOU TRIED A MASK? JUST MAYBE? Oh no I’m so sorry/shocked you got Covid on your maskless honeymoon and now you’re sad :(
A health insurance plan for two adults that covers basically nothing until you hit a $15k deductible costs $1300 per month w/o a subsidy. That means you would have to pay about 30k IN ONE YEAR before insurance paid a dime for anything
I don't understand why we put up with this
This is why I do not sing unmasked, but will put myself in risky environments if I am wearing a respirator. No other virus infects HALF a choir in ONE rehearsal. I’ve been singing in groups since I was 10. Yeah, colds can get through a cast, but that takes weeks. Covid is ONE DAY
I hate to be pessimistic (lol), but I watched a 50 person choir have a superspreader & then allow the performance to be maskless like 4 weeks later bc “half of us have immunity”. I was one of like 3 masks. Most people will not change their behavior even after being mass infected
I have never seen so many simultaneously sick students (even in winter) before. Every week I have a sore throat cancellation, or students who need several lessons that serve as vocal health recovery lessons. Half my studio is taking a sick/mental health break for the holidays
You cannot convince me that after literal years of masked singing without incident, that TWO WEEKS after masks were dropped, a superspeader nearly cancels our season, with a child as the index case. This is a real world example of exactly what studies are showing. Over & over.
Musicians, please. I beg of you. Consider the health of your body & how that enables you to perform. You know covid can cause vocal paralysis or hearing damage, right? Hand neuropathy? Please mask on stage or at least advocate for masked audiences/ventilation. Build a CR box. Plz
@katedodd3
@helenmcollins2
I have voted in every presidential election. I even caucused for Bernie back in the day. I even vote in local (gasp) elections! In a sea of white haired old ppl at the YMCA, I stand out like a sore thumb as one of the only young people in the room. The system is designed this way
Trolls on this hellsite:
“Masks don’t work and you look silly and I bet they CANT EVEN HEAR YOU WHEN YOU SING 🤡”
The conductor of the choir I sing with currently, who has never seen me without a mask:
… but I really struggle with this implied end game that music will be online only or something. Should musicians livestream their events? Yes! Should venues be more accessible? Yes! Are tours unsustainable on a burning 🌎? Yes! But once again, what should musicians do, actually?
So, I don’t remember a designated “coughing room” existing at performance halls in prepandemic times
H/T to my local Still Coviding FB Group for this find.
The narrative that people posting about c0Vid precautions still are being paid by some shadowy government entity is so, so funny. Awaiting my deposit any day now lolol
