If youโ€™re a student right now, you should know that this is a great time to be a terrible writer. Your teachers see five run-on sentences, three comma splices, and a dangling modifier, and were like โ€œOh, thank god. This kid is a THINKER! A-.โ€

How to explain to students that encountering a single well-crafted, complex sentence that puts a difficult idea succinctly and clearly in an otherwise opaque or messy piece of writing is exciting because those sentences are the happy accidents of human writing, BUTโ€ฆ

I want to make students understand that humans do not actually want technical perfection, especially when itโ€™s masking an absence of creativity, curiosity, or intellectual ambition. Some of us might think we do, but those of us who attend to the learning process know we donโ€™t.

Unpopular opinion, I guess: when people crowdsource texts for courses theyโ€™re teachingโ€”something Iโ€™ve doneโ€”itโ€™s not because they have no idea what theyโ€™re doing, more that theyโ€™re curious about how others would approach the course. Seems like a good use of the hellsite actually.
