New idea to replace MAID. It's called MAIL. Medical assistance in living. It's where the government doesn't leave giant holes in healthcare coverage like dental, Rx, vision, mental health, addiction counseling, and family doctors so people don't live lives of despair.

transit fact. Yesterday, I took 2 buses over 1h 15m to get to the Surrey climate strike in Cloverdale. It would have taken me 40-50 minutes to instead go to the Vancouver event. Hard to build community when that's the case.
Congratulations to

Inauguration day! It was a long fight to get Brenda into the mayor's office. Very gratified she mentioned not only the environment during her inauguration, but also climate explicitly. Looking forward to the next four years!

How much affordable housing could we get instead of the $1B McCallum Stadium? Well, in 2018 the Feds and Province agreeed to spend $990M over 10 years to provide housing for 34K families. Imagine that concentrated in

@j_mcelroy
Farnworth tabling legislation in the fall to ensure this doesn't happen again... it's just his resignation letter. Mishandled from the start. I expect the reprecussions of this to impact
#SurreyBC
politics for some time even if we don't see a court battle.
McCallum just told the emcee the city won't fly the pride flag.
@brendalockebc
just said if elected she'd put up a fourth flag pole so that community flags - like the pride flag - can be flown.

With today's vote approving sprawl into South Campbell Heights by
@MetroVancouver
we have gone from the vision of "Cities in a Sea of Green" to "Cities in a Rising Sea." We need good people running for council across the region if we are going to stem the tide.
In case anyone was wondering where I stood on the issue, I think
@delford
and
@nagra_m
are not fit for public office. They have none of the qualities I'd hope for in councillors.
Personal update. Very happy to report that I've accepted the position of program coordinator with Organizing for Change (OFC). I'll be helping deliver training to activists and bringing the asks of BC's biggest enviro groups into alignment. Very excited!
Big crowd half an gour before

Council. I'm seeing multiple media outlets on scene and quiet a line to get into chambers. Watch this thread for Tweets!
This absolutely blows apart the old SPU pledge letter that all but 20 SPS officers signed. Really glad to see so many have come around already. Hoping more decide patching over is the best move as it becomes more clear RCMP will remain

I am dissapointed. Stuart either lied to me or lied in his post. His message to me said he is "dealing with the source" and his post just now suggests he doesn't know where he got the letter from.
Sad state of affairs in

. Do better, Stuart.
The property tax hike is to cover the increased cost of the SPS. It was initially 17.5%, but the province allowed City to use 90M earmarked for infrastructure to push the increase down to 12.5%.
Remember, the purpose of the fund that 90M came from is to "...support projects that
Totally agree. I've lived next to decent public transit (10-15 min interval) most of my adult life, with the exception when I lived in Marpole. It is a world of difference to jump on the bus vs plan a bus trip.
Think public transit “doesn’t work” in your city or suburb? If that’s true, it wasn’t a foregone conclusion — it’s because of choices made. Land-use, funding, infrastructure & operational decisions. If you get fundamentals like frequency wrong, it fails.
Make good choices.
@Harold_Steves
I'm so sorry. Many of us tried so hard on this one. No condolences will do, but I'll be trying to keep them accountable here in

While I'm dissapointed in this, we will continue to fight for Bear Creek Park. This ruling was on the legal status of various plots of land, not on the wisdom of building this road. We'll be updating folks as we go forward.

We will see what Farnworth's recent letter results in (or not). Probably expect at least a Notice of Motion from the Safe Surrey Coalition.
It's so weird that we are years and years in to the SPS vs RCMP debate and some people still don't realize every police force has hiring issues. There aren't enough qualified people wanting to be police officers. SPS isn't going to magically fix that.
Showing the decline in crime in Surrey and asks how folks can claim Surrey RCMP is not doing a good job. Says this has been done without additional resources. Says transition has been disruptive. Says he is proud of the work accomplished.
@surreywillis
I highly doubt they were a healthcare worker. A lot of the anti-vaxxers claim to be healthcare workers both online and in person, but are nothing of the sort.
@STutaze
I don't think I've heard Brenda be disrespectful to SPS officers. Anyone who sersiously engages with the topic of policing in
#SurreyBC
knows it is a hard job and is grateful for the work of all officers patrolling our city.
Today, in collaboration with our friends at
@SurreyForFuture
, we are pleased to announce our next list of city council endorsements for the City of Surrey and the City of White Rock!
On Saturday October 15th, please consider leaving a spot on your ballot for the candidates below
Relax, bud. I just think Farnworth is bad at his job and mishandled the situation. If he was going to force SPS, that should have happened long ago. That doesn't make me a BCUP supporter. Or is it support the leadership or you are persona non-grata? Also, Falcon supports SPS
This has always been the plan for the KEEP THE RCMP people, they want every NDP MLA turned to a BCUP MLA. Here you have an actual socialist pimping for the RCMP. I remember a time when lefties detested the RCMP, now they are their biggest supporters.
A huge thank you to
@LindaAnnisBC
who is now proposing sending South Campbell Heights plan back to
#SurreyBC
for consultation. You were in a tough spot but are obviously listening to feedback. 🌳🌲💚
How are you going to have a public debate about a document you have signed an NDA for? Sorry, but Annis is out to lunch on this one. And Farnworth has said no referendum... Is she just counting on citizens not knowing this and thinking a referendum would be good?
If Farnworth was going to force the SPS, he really should have made that clear even before the election. This is a failure of leadership from Farnworth and NDP. I don't discount the possibility of it happening, however.
Sharing this FOI again.

In other news, I had a dream last night that Elford and Nagra walked out during the untransition report and resigned. Not sure if I should be celebrating a nice dream or worried how much I am thinking about council. 🤔😶🌫️
Commissioner Edward's speaking now. Saying this is the first time he's been asked to speak to council in years. Starts by emphasizing that officers - RCMP and SPS - are a high priority for them. Says he has not commented much on the transition, despite wanting to.
To be clear, the issue is that Province has asked City to do something it isn't the correct legal entity to do (individualized HR plans). City is working with Province to solve this problem.
If a roadblock was hit, It was Farnworth who put it there.
Big thanks to everyone who volunteered their time (and their money) to get us this big win! I'm feeling very optimistic ahead of August 19th. In the interim, we're going to continue to picket and keep up the pressure to

The B.C. Supreme Court has granted an interim injunction to stop construction on a new road planned through Bear Creek Park in Surrey until Aug. 19, when the main injunction application is set to be heard.

Good morning
#SurreyBC
. It's not only a council day, it's a special council day (there is a special closed council meeting at 3:30 today plus 7:00 regular council public hearing). Stand out item seems to be 'policing transition update'. Agenda:
"The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says construction of an 84th Avenue connector through Bear Creek Park will kill fish and it's asking the city to submit a new engineering proposal."
If only some people had raised this issue earlier... 🤔
Stuart has doubled down and said he got the letter from a random Tweet and doesn't rememeber where. Then why does he describe his source as 'reliable' to me?
This does not add up at all.

Edwards now praising the Mental Health Outreach Team, Surrey Gang Enforcement Team, Mobile Street Enforcement Team, Project Lavender, and Shattering the image. All he says are local Surrey intiatives built by/with Surrey RCMP and community for Surrey specifically.
This is also a reminder to follow and support
@FairVoteCanada
regardless of your party affiliation! We need electoral reform so the government actually reflects the electorate.
One thing that folks aren't commenting on is the fact that Bose seems to have flipped his position as a result of arguments at
#SurreyBC
council. He was quoted in a press release that morning against, but ended up voting for.
That's a big deal.
The mystery of where Annis/Bose land has been solved: against.
Their reason? They say the report is incomplete.
The reality. A vote against this report is a vote for SPS, a vote to accept is a vote for keeping the RCMP.
Referendum is off the table, politically and practically.
A first for my live tweeting of

Everyone remembers the book burning from Fahrenheit 451, but let's not forget that the culture in that book also had a constant stream of empty "entertainment" piped into their homes. Feels a lot like the mindless media consumption we engage in today.
To understand the danger present in the times we live in, everyone really should read/re-read Orwell’s 1984, Atwood’s The Handmaids Tale, and Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451.
...and not the political decisions around who does the policing. Goes over some history; RCMP has been policing Surrey for 70 years. Pop growth, COVID 19, no additional resources, the 2022 border processes the RCMP handled quite well.
A desperate ploy for PR purposes.
There is currently no ethics comissioner. This has no chance of getting anywhere before a decision on the transition. Also, as someone who filed an ethics complaint on a conflict of interest, it's my understanding this doesn't count.

I will of course be Tweeting and taking pictures. There were rumors of a pro-SPS crowd coming to the last council meeting that proved to be false. I could see it this time, but almost for sure a bigger turnout on December 12th when the report to Farnworth is approved. 1/

@SurreyNowLeader
Doug McCallum yesterday announced in S Asian media outlets
he will be attend Surrey Council tomorrow when RCMP O/C Brian Edwards will present framework report to Council to Keep RCMP, POJ in Surrey- he is also urging massive attendance by SSC supporters & all who support SPS.
But the province can't force phase 2 and no mechanisms exist to place RCMP officers under SPS command. Very poorly handled situation by the NDP. I hope Farnworth makes the right decision and doesn't force a court battle.
@blueoil23
False post
@blueoil23
, that's not what Minister Farnworth said. He said the transition plan continues until a new plan is approved. Neither
@brendalockebc
not City Council have the authority to stop the Transition.
@PardeepKKooner
Hepner now asking what else could be bought with the money being spent on SPS. 4 Arenas? 2 Rec Centres? Hepner now saying RCMP has served us well for 70 years. Also pointing out
@mikefarnworthbc
has rejected a referendum.
When you don't just drink the kool-aid, you chug the entire pitcher.
How is replacing RCMP with SPS going to make a positive impact on the school portable crisis? on the staffing crisis at SMH?
Systems do impact eachother, but this argument is out to lunch.
#SurreyBC
Very glad for this ruling, though it's unfortunate that there is no remedy for how they dragged us before a judge whenever possible to inflate our costs.

Asking for costs on a case like this is akin to a SLAPP lawsuit.

Meet Dr. Jody:
Says a decision was made to abbreviate planning for the transition in order to get boots on the ground. Says transition was split into 2 phases. We are in phase 1. SPS officers come in and work under the RCMP, under Comissioner Edwards command. Says phase 1 is not transition.
Facts don't fit your narrative? Just say that real facts exist elsewhere... facts that you can't show, can't demonstrate, and can't prove. Why would anyone believe these clowns? 🤡 Remember when they said SPS wouldn't cost considerably more?🤣
@sebastiansajda
Manipulating data won't hide the truth. Unreported crimes don't equal lower crime rates in Surrey. When people lose faith in the police, thefts, vandalism, drug deals go unreported. Politicians lie to get elected including you , so why would RCMP share real numbers?
He actually asked why Brenda hadn't worked with SSC to reinstate the committees. Why would McCallum - who closed the them - work with Brenda to start them up again? Absurd.
Knowledge of how council works is important. I have a PoliSci background and years of watching council.
Now he is calling out SPS and SPU for comments they have made in public that are erroneous. Throwing serious shade in that direction. Edwards saying he has been a city cop longer than most of the SPS exec team have. Says he won't criticize city cops, but he won't...
Folks on
#SurreyBC
Twitter are going nuts over this CR thinking this is the untransition plan. It is not. This is a necessary muncicipal instrument to direct staff to work on a untransition plan. The mayor can only do so much (and not that much) without such an instrument.
Speaking now to 135a and how it was a 'pit of suffering'; next sideshow the same street without tents two years later. Says they alleviated that suffering through collaboration. Says RCMP built a local solution. Says Surrey RCMP local and not directed by Ottawa.
It's absurd that a mayor who said they are a champion of the environment and of greenspaces would push such a project through. We should be protecting, preserving, and expanding Bear Creek Park; it should be our equivalent to Stanley Park or Central Park. Shame.
